[Column] Guild Wars 2: Cutthroat Politics

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In our latest Guild Wars 2 column, we take a look at the just-announced "Cutthroat Politics" update that is coming tomorrow. We offer some analysis of the content we learned about during a press conference and some thoughts about it as well. Be sure to share your ideas in the comments after reading.

Ever since the assassination back during The Dragon Bash, the seat on the Captain’s Council has remained empty.  This powerful position is being pursued by Ellen Kiel, and Evon Gnashblade.  But this power can only be obtained through election.  Each will make some promises to players in order to secure votes.   Ellen will reduce the cost of waypoint uses for four weeks, and start fractal research dealing with the Thaumanova Reactor explosion.   Evon will reduce the cost of the black Lion keys for four weeks, and will start research on the fall of the old God Abaddon.   Fans of the original may find Evons offerings a bit more interesting.  One thing to remember when supporting your favorite candidate, whatever option loses, will never see the light of day.  The development team hasn’t created this content yet.  They are waiting to hear what the players want.

Can't wait to see what all comes of this but I will not be voting for the char I will vote the human in I know what happened to Abbodon I was there. So give me something I dont know about the reactor that caused the Thurmanova reactor to blow and cause the chaos it did.

Actually, the story of the Fall of Abaddon is before he was locked behind the Gates of Anguish. The very first fall of Abaddon where the gods threw him into the pit and locked him up.

    This is not a game.

Yes but thats told in Nightfall's story the Reactor is not explained other then it happened at some point but they do not go into detail as to how or why.

I am voting for the Charr because I really want to see thee fall off Abaddon. I was there for his death but would really like to be there when it all started. The ancient lore is way more appealing to me.

Yeah the fall of abadon fractal predates the original GW. I am definitely voting charr because imo the fall of a God owns a reactor meltdown

If the Abaddon one wins, please remember when you're in that Fractal...

If someone asks if you're a God, you say YES!

    Oderint, dum metuant.

lol @ volkon.  I'm excited for this, though I probably won't have much time to play since I'm moving at the end of the month.  As far as the campaign goes, the art pictured kind of makes Ellen look like a dude.

It's obvious Evon is going to win because everyones OMG ABADDON GW1 CIRCLEJERK (ugh), just remember now everything we are going to do is for profit from now on. It's amazing how everyone only see's the fractals as the reward and not the future possible outcome of this storyline.

Pfft they offer the obviously better choice with the cash shop incentive. Not a game breaker but pretty sly.

So are they saying that characters in game know what black lion keys are?

The NPCs are aware of the cash shop? Breaking the 4th wall eh? lol

Whats the practical reasons for this existing in lore? *shrug*

MMORPG Gamers/Developers need a reality check!

Do you really think the player 'choice' is affecting that much? You can't develop a MMO at a drop of a hat and so the 'choice' is more to make the player feel good but in reality the stuffs already planned out and you're only determining the priority of development.

Well done, you just made up a load of stuff, based your opinion around it and then tried to pass it off as fact.

I know far more than you about game development. But I am not here to argue it with you. :p

Again, you have no idea who I am and just made something up and tried to pass it off as fact.. and in fact believe it yourself. Well done.

It's a shame you don't know as much as me about reading articles properly anyway... "One thing to remember when supporting your favourite candidate, whatever option loses, will never see the light of day."

This NPC runs the cash shop. He even has an item named after him.
