This is me roleplaying on Planetside 2 pretending that it is EverQuest Next. I go to all three zones. Snowy Esamir, Lush Amerish and Barren Desert of Indar.
I wanted to show what EQN might look like and that my 5 year old machine plays it on max settings very well. While I do not know why the fraps FPS meter shows 60 my actual framerate is about 40 - 60 alone in the wilderness and 25 - 40 while in combat. Keep in mind that there are a couple of lag spikes that are due to me using fraps while running around.
My computer specs:
Win 7 Ultimate 64
Core 2 duo e8500 3.16 ghz
Gigabyte MOBO: Ep45t-ud3p
ATI Radeon 4890 1Gig RAM
8 Gigs system ram 1600 DDR3

Hehe, that's weird... Those spires at the end of the video, kinda looks like the wizard spires in north karana, from EQ1....
Like most every other MMO you can always zoom in and play first person.
It's not nearly the same because all of those MMO's have been designed around a third-person perspective. Going into first-person view in these games is extremely awkward and generally puts you at a disadvantage. Also not to mention that the "first person" in most MMO's is just a shitty slapped on zoom-in feature.
Isn't it always just a zoomed in perspective? What do you expect to be different? I mean, I can zoom in to first person in WoW for instance and other than not having a gun I don't see any difference from Planetside. Though in WoW you can't see your weapon at all I suppose which is a little immersion breaking. But in FPS games you can't see your characters feet which always bugged me lol.
The difference is that all of the buildings, mobs, terrain, and basically all of the environments were designed around a third-person perspective so everything is generally much bigger or awkward looking when going into first-person. Every fight is also generally designed with this perspective in mind so you won't be able to see something like mob adds spawning or an indication of a big boss attack if you're limited in view.
Although I do agree I would like to be able to see my lower body and feet in a FPS. I personally would prefer a forced first-person perspective for EQN, but that's just me. This would give awesome opportunities to things like the Oculus Rift.
I don't mind 3rd or 1st person MMORPGs, as long as they're done right.
Skyrim is a perfect example of how you can make a game both 1st and 3rd person without sacrificing the quality or give any real combat advantage to either PoV.
Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
It makes me motion sick when game have that much bounce in their guns as they run. Luckily I found a cure, as long as I remember to take it before I start to feel sick.
I'm with the 1st person guy. I hope it does have the option to zoom in, even though I also agree with him that games that are designed for 3rd don't look the same.

PS2 uses the ForgeLight engine which is what EQNext is using. So these environments may very well be similar to what we see in EQN at the very least we can see what ForgeLight can do without you having to download 15 gigs of info to see for yourself.
I had a similar system when ps2 launched, and it took a complete dump once in combat.
Since then, they've optimized it considerably, but I still think something along the lines of an i5/i7 is basically required for large scale combat.
You caught me I am lying.
Thanks for posting the video. I admit I hadnt paid too much attention to PS2 as it is not my cup of tea however viewing it as a testing ground for the potential of EQ Next graphics is a nice insight. Its a great looking game, so one would hope the same for EQ Next.
With the total lack of information, Sony had better bring it on Aug 2nd.
The problem I have with most MMOs that have the zoom to first view is the perspective being placed down at about knee level and a field of view that is either queasy or far too short with no periphery.
Sorry, was I supposed to say, "you're right Dejo! PS2 runs great in large scale combat with a system 5 years old" ???
Runs smooth as butter for me, and I've been in fights with well over 150+. I have noticed that when at the stock 3.4ghz, it gets a little hitchy at times when theres a massive battle.
edit:
i7 2600 @ 4.5
8gb 1600 ram
120gb ssd
nvidia 480 gtx
I think your idea of smooth and my idea are two different things. I play MMOs exclusively and am used to zoning into the guild lobby in EQ and having to look at the floor to move, haha, or being in WoW in Org where your fps goes from 120 while looking at the sky to 20 when running over to the auction house, lol.
Perhaps I should have said it is playable I know that many a FPS player would scream at 25 - 40 FPS lol. I play MMOs and just accept that it is always going to have issues.
5 years ago I ran at 100+ FPS and every expansion of every game it slowly went down down down.
Anyway here is to differences of opinion.
Cheers!
