Which MMO should I dabble in while waiting for EQN?

EeksEeks Member Posts: 72
So I've been on an MMO hiatus since 2009 and recently built a PC preparing to play EQN (Damned you Smedley thinking I'd get to play this year).  I started playing the Realm online in the late 90's and transitioned to EQ when it first came out.  Following, I played EQ2, Vanguard and WoW.  I was just curious what all of you think I should waste my time with until I can try out EQN.  I'd put a poll up but, I'm afraid I'd forget about a perfectly reasonable option.  Ideally, I'd like something that's active enough that I can enjoy some grouping.  Appreciate the input :)

Since EQN is going to be more action oriented with a reduced skill bar, I'd play one of the current selection so you can get a feel for it.  It's definitely a different way to play, but once you get used to it its a lot of fun.  Three of them are Neverwinter Online, GW2 and TERA.  I think The Secret World falls into this as well, but I haven't really followed that game.

    Have you check out Forge?

It's a PvP oriented game with combat style pretty much like GW2... but better. :)

I recommend EQ or EQ2. Both are still fun games, and they said that they're going to have some sort of cross-game tie in.  Probably some veteran rewards or something for your EQN character if you have EQ or EQ2 characters.

They're also free to play, which is also a bonus.

Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL

Try The Secret World.  I was a bit skeptical about it but find it to be one of the better games released over the last few years.  Takes questing and storytelling in an mmo to a new level that's for sure.

    I also agree with TSW.

I'd probably try to find a guild before whatever you decide to play, will make things more fun. Just post in the game you want to play's forums.

GW2: public quests, no holy trinity, 5 weapon skills and 5 utilizty skill, dynamic combat, and dodge. Too many features are similar between GW2 and EQN. However, EQN will be more sandbox while GW2 is themepark and you cannot build houses. I think EQN crafting will be similar to SWG crafting, that was the best crafting that any MMO had until today.

Take note I think that with storybrick and voxel farm EQN can make better what GW2 and Anet promised us with that famous "Manifesto".

Try too EQ for see the lore. If possible, find a "nostalgia" server where not all EQ expansions are open.

When they launch EQN Landmark, get it and play. It will have EQN crafting.

PS I am advicing GW2 specifically because both games are public quest bases, with few normal quests. Both GW2 and EQN will not have that famous "!" over the head of NPC (yes, a dev confirmed it for EQN, no "!") . Some players get confounded by that at GW2 and had no idea where to go in world map. IMHO, some people will have the same problem with GW2, no "!" for guide them where go and who talk. Add to the lack of trinity, so no one is here for heal you, you need self heal and you have some players that just cannot understand GW2 and quit.

So, if you can adapt to GW2, you can adapt to EQN. I really do'nt think that MMO based on traditional quests will be a good way for prepare for EQN.

first of all, im sure youve noticed but you are asking in the midst of some of the greatest histrionics i have seen in these forums ... well since ive been here.

i mention this so that when you get weird, oddball, or otherwise offtopic and and off the wall comments about games that are terrible, that are ruining all that mmo's have stood for through the generations, that the purity of the virginal early days have been polluted by, that you will just keep going down the list of posts and find something better to read.

having said that there are some good options out there for you to dabble in:

    1. Vanguard: join the guild Twylighte Songe and you will find all the company and help you could ever imagine.

    2. EQ2: this is a fun little gem with simply tons of content. its doubtful you could come close to completing it all even if EQN took till the beginning of 2015. like so many other games it is top heavy, but there are always people running around and there are new options if you simply dont want to bother with grouping, like hiring mercenaries.

    3. DCUO: this is an odd little gem. mostly for the setting and the combat. the combat is pure action-y, the kind you'd expect to find in a comic book. i was never a fan of action combat, didn't like it at all until i played this game. completely turned me around on the issue. if EQN uses the combat from this game its going to be tons of fun.

    4. TSW: this game has incredibly lackluster combat, but every other part of it is really quite amazing if you enjoy thinking games and puzzling out just what the illuminati or others might have been up to when John Doe died. a completely open skill system means you can not only learn all the skills you can mix and match almost any way you please.

    5. Rift: while a themepark in the purest sense the devs really care about this game and their gamers. the f2p model is barre none the best model out there. and since launch a ton of content has been added along with multiple lines of leveling up.

    6. GW2: a great game. admittedly some find it quite dull, but with over 2million accounts logging regularly it clearly has something going for it.

You can try Dark Fall Unholy Wars.  It is a action oriented sandbox type game.  But not a replacement for EQN.

Rift is a great game with alot of fun content and a fun flavor to it. It's got plenty to unlock and do. It does some things differently and was good at furthering the use of dynamic content. You can solo, but the classes really shine more in groups.

There are a few other games either in conversion or development that are worth note as well.

This link is to Richard Garriott's new game "Shroud of the Avatar" in heavy development, which is a spiritual successor to Ultima Online. If you watch the video you will get the general flavor of what the game is about.

    Also this one

    http://www.archeage.com/en#trailer

This link is to ArcheAge which is currently out in Korea and a company called Trion Worlds is converting it to english and Americanizing some of the content.

Both of those games are more sandbox feeling and allow for the player to do far more than the current cookie cutter batch of MMOs. I also think they have retained some of the special qualities the current gen is missing.

well definitely try both, but TERA just did not grab my attention at all when i tried it.

also, i found the claim that it was 'action combat' to be a bit misleading. its nowhere near as movement oriented for all classes as GW2 or other are. in fact at times it roots you more often than not when using abilities.
