Housing Vendors and Auction Houses

kruluxkrulux Member Posts: 229

If you played Star Wars Galaxies or even Everquest 2, you may remember how anyone could set up a House vendor to sell their wares and what nots.  There was an "Auction House" or "Listing Terminal" that you could search and find what you were looking for and then.. jump on your mount/ship and proceed to the location and purchase the object desired.

I also really like the idea of a vendor in your house and also the ability to display armor sets etc... just lent a certain extra panache to the whole affair.  Plus folks got to see your house if you allowed it...

I don't believe SOE has made mention the system to be used in EQN.. but I rather liked how it was implemented in SWG and EQ2 to an extent.

I liked the idea of having to travel to pick up your item at the source vs. the WoW type auction house when it is delivered via the mailbox.  It felt more "real" to me to have to travel and it adds the dynamic of traveling distance vs. convenience over prices charged.

Thoughts?

I really loved the way that they did housing and auctions in EQ2. It is to date the best housing I have seen, and the amazing work that some players did in their houses still leaves me awed.

This is why I think "Landmarks" will be a huge hit.

As for Auctions, Charge a fee if you want to buy it straight from your house or terminal, charge no fee if they go pick it up at the house. If they do this correctly, and some houses are in the middle of lavastorm... wow... imagine the trek just to get an apple pie! :-D Personally, I would love it... the journey for the uber delicious dessert! - Lavastorm edition.

I definitely like the idea of a fee to have something delivered.  I would also make the fee based on distance.  This could create a trader profession, where people go to remote areas to buy rare resources and trek them back to the city and charge less than the normal delivery fee to make a profit.

We need player made stores like we had in everquest 1, too many MMOs have auction houses now it'll be nice to go back to the old stores.

I'm all for it.  Driving off to people's personal vendors was one of the factors that made SWG feel like a virtual world than just another combat game.  By letting players place things free-form in their houses, there were some really creative layouts and designs done that aren't possible with a hook system.  I always enjoyed the guild halls that had shopping malls or meeting areas where they had crafted chairs set up with specific people's names on them for guild meetings.

/agree that SWG  home-based vendors and that EQ2's ability to set up sell goods from merchandise crates in characters' homes are very nice game features. I especially liked that in SWG, we could establish our own shops for people to come to.

Holding thumbs that those features make it into EQNext. I also think the trip to buy goods from other players makes the world feel more authentic.

One of the things I loved about UO was setting up the house and loading up vendors.  As long as there's a global search ala SWG as someone mentioned previously that would be an Ideal setup.  As far as buying from the search directly, I could see that being added just because of the popular demand for such a feature.  But if they do, make the "shipping and handling" charges very steep.

If they truly want to make EQN bring back the "Social" aspect of the mmo's one of the BEST things to do is to have:

    1. Non-instanced housing (I hated this in EQ2, it ruined housing for me).

    2. NO GLOBAL AH. This global AH like you have in WoW and other mmo's absolutely kills any and all social interaction between crafters and customers in an mmo.

SWG and UO did this the best. Non-instanced housing where crafters could stock their goods on vendors in their house, where you'd have to physically go there to get your goods.  A lot of the times crafters would be at their shop (crafting, checking inventory, stocking it up, etc). They also would put a lot of effort into decorating their shop, making it actually look like a shop/home. People would ask them for custom orders, haggle on a price, offer to do favors (IE get them some resources in exchange for making "x" item).

SWG had a limited AH, whereby you could only list items of a certain value. IT was used mainly for resouroces and cheap (IE noobie gear) items, whereas your main gear (armour/weapons) you had to actually go to player shops to buy.

I hope they understand this aspect and don't go with a normal Global AH where you can browse and buy things like some ebay-style auction and then receive the item in your "mailbox" and never once have to go to a crafters shop or interact with crafters in any way.

    1. Theyve already stated that the current plan is to have housing where players can effectively lock off access to everyone. That means nobody can access your plot, although they can dig underground to get at resources.

    2. I prefer SWG's version. Go to a terminal or AH barker, and you can find anything everywhere.  However, if you buy something that isnt in the vendors immediate area, you need to make the long trek to pick that item up.  In swg, that might ential you hopping across 2 planets, taking a shuttle, then a 5k+ ride, just to get to the vendor.

I personally hope there's no Auction House, but a more organic way of players being able to set up offline markets.

Thematically it works better imho.  Having eBay in a MMORPG break immersion and would like not to see it in EQN.

@#&;@ing hate the phrase "auction house".

Sounds so damn cheap. Because it is.

Time limited listings are "AUCTIONS" in "AUCTION HOUSES", like we see in Rift...& maybe WoW?

    Never checked WoW's broker/auction system.

EQ2 utilizes the FAR SUPERIOR, infinitely listed...BROKER system...you list an item, & so long as your property rent is paid, it's...listed.
