Lets say I lvl up an Archer, and then at lvl 30 get the choice to turn into a Bard. If i do decide to go Bard will I never be able to become a PURE archer? if that makes any sense at all....
It works absolutely nothing like the talent trees in WoW. Not even remotely similar. When you do the quest to unlock a job, you get a soul crystal. This crystal is equipped like any other piece of armor (weapons, etc) and it then unlocks whatever abilities that job should have for whatever level you are. That's it. You still have ALL of the Archer abilities and just have the Bard abilities along with them.
Don't want to be a Bard anymore? Unequip the crystal. The jobs share the same level as the base job, so if you have Archer at 50, you have Bard at 50.
When you finish the bard quest you get a Bard soul gem which is an equippable item. So to change to Brd for parties just equip the soul gem. Then for solo to change back to Arc take it off. They each get separate hot bars as well, so not much worry about constantly having to change to hots bar constantly.
Why would you want to go pure archer? There is no positives to it.
If you get bard to max level, you get all the max level archer spells and bard spells.
There is a point for soloing as you then have access to all the other classes cross class skills(that you have learned) and 10 slots for them on Arc. On Brd you confined to Whm, and derp forgetting the other and only 5 slot for cross class skills.

That's funny, when I switch to a talent tree in WoW, I still have my class' base skills in addition to the new talent skills I get, much like how jobs in XIV retain their base class skills when they switch to a job. Hey look at that, they are more than remotely similar save for the inclusion of soul crystals (which serves no other purpose than to change you to the job it's associated with) and a different class/job name. Voila!
You're confined to your job crystal alone. If you have Bard equipped, you cannot have abilities from other classes/jobs. The jobs give you the 10 extra abilities that you would normally take from cross-classing, so that's how it is balanced. Sometimes you want the Bard abilities, sometimes you want to take abilities from other classes instead.
Also, with Bard you aren't confined to WHM skills, you can't use any skills at all besides ARC and BRD.

Not exactly. As an Archer you get 17 Archer skills + 10 cross-class skills of your choosing from ANY other class. As a Bard, you get 17 Archer skills + 5 Bard-exclusive skills + 5 cross class skills ONLY from the Lancer/Conjurer skill trees. Lancer/Conjurer being the support classes for Bard.
The 2 support classes differ for each job. In Bard's case, it's Lancer and Conjurer.

I can see how you might of come to that conclusion but its still a bit different. A job is an addition to your class as opposed to turning your class into a different spec ala changing talent trees in WoW(which by the way no longer exist so if the OP hadn't played WoW they would be even more confused by your attempt to make a comparison here). Switching between sets that you set up personally isn't the same as equipping a gem to give you a few additional skills predetermined by the game already
Starting to make sense now. Its worth doing bard even if Im not going to stay with it. This can be a complicated system when you first hear it, but now it sounds like theres room for alot of customization (maybe more then having a feat tree)
I only read a couple posts but some people seem confused about the job/class system.
Here's how it works, if you level Archer you will still need it's corresponding job to unlock the Bard job, but regardless of that once you unlock Bard you will receive a "Bard Stone" which you would equip anytime you want to become a Bard, and unequip anytime you want to be an Archer (Still need to have bow equipped either way).
Now about skills. As a Bard you will be able to "equip" from other Classes that you have leveled, not Jobs i.e Bard. Too use Bard skills you must have the Bard Stone equipped. You will be able to use some Archer skills as a Bard though.
As an Archer you will be able to equip skills from, let's say a White Mage such as heal.
The idea behind the Job/Class system is classes are for solo play which is why you can use other class skills. The Jobs are for Group play, more specialized roles.
Some incorrect info in here. Jobs can use ALL of their main class' skills, i.e. Bard can use ALL of Archer's abilities. Also Jobs can still use skills from 2 other classes, but they are limited to ONLY 5. i.e. Bard can use 5 skills from Conjurer and Lancer. Dragoon can use 5 skills from Marauder and Archer, etc.
Also as a side note in Bard's case you do get a 20% reduction to damage when playing songs. So some may prefer staying as Archer to get access to better abilities for soloing from cross-class skills.
So is the whole reason to keep bard so you can have 3 different skill sets (bard, archer, gladiator)?? And if you choose not to use the bard you can only you skills from 2 different classes (archer, gladiator)?? Or can you use lets say 2 skills from every class that you unlock if you wish??
The class and job system can be quite confusing at times.
The idea is that classes can be a bit more versatile. Each class has its own niche in the group but have more freedom in equipping abilities from other classes. For example, to be a more solo friendly gladiator, you could pick up both 'Second Wind' from Pugilist in addition to 'Cure' from Conjuror.
Jobs can be viewed as an advanced class. An aspect or role of that class is exaggerated at the cost of less versatility. In the gladiator's case, by equipping the Paladin job stone, you become much more effective at tanking, holding aggro and damage mitigation.
You can change your class by simply changing your weapon. You can change your job by simply changing out the job stone. Each class can equip certain job stones (currently 1 for each class except for Arcanist which will have 2).
As for the bard... right now that is the only job available to Archer. However, I imagine we'll see Ranger at some point. The only reason you'd run around as a Bard is because it brings some group support to the table. In a small group or solo, you'd probably just want to run around as archer so you can equip some self-heals and damage enhancing abilities.

Archer can pull certain cross-class skills from ALL classes for a total of 10.
Bard can only pull certain cross-class skills from Conjurer or Lancer and limited to a total of 5.

No, the only thing bard gives you is access to bard skills which is currently 3 songs otherwise you are basically an archer except for if you are a bard you can only equip 5 abilities outside of archer/bard from 2 specific classes (cant remember the exact two for bard). If you are archer (meaning you have a bow equiped but not bard stone equiped) you dont get those 3 songs but you can equip up to 10 abilities from any class you have lvled.
