Is GW2 dying? Where is everyone?

TheScavengerTheScavenger Member EpicPosts: 3,321

I play on Tarnished Coast and finally made it to the endgame zones. But, where is everyone? There is FAR less people than in the lower level areas. Mid level areas were emptier...but in most MMOs everyone is all in the "endgame" (I know GW2 doesn't really have one) areas.

Cause only at peak times do I actually see people. Otherwise, I'm trying to solo all the zone events and what not...and MMOs are not fun at all when soloing nearly all the time.

Do people just stop playing after they reach the max level? Or where is everyone?

I assume zerging around the newer zones. I doubt the game is full on dying, but its likely people got bored zerging the same zones. If you are meaning beyond the first area of Orr, then the time i did play it NEVER had groups really around there just a few wanders.

If you're talking SouthSun, they're in Orr. If you're talking Orr they're probably out and about farming champions for the new loot drops they have. Orr has become quite repopulated since the change. There's also a ton of people in Divinity's Reach for the Queen's Jubilee and the farming there, that's actually rather fun and challenging.

Culling turns off in four days. Then we'll see what we're missing... or not.

Tarnished Coast, you mean the server that's constantly full and i hear everyone moaning about it? Alot of players are probably doing Dragon events in other zones or farming champs in Cursed Shore or Queensdale. It's far from dead..

We're pretty much all at the pavillion. Loot pinatas everywhere and we're cashing in.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

I know I am on retreat with my debate team.  That has limited my time immensely.  We also have bandwidth restrictions but I am about to not give a dang about that.

So that is where I am  :-p

After reading every thread on the GW2 forums of late I believe I can answer the titular question.

According to the experts on these forums GW2 is growing whilst at the same time emptying out at an alarming rate.It is at once a financial success and on the verge of closing down for good.It is also owned by NCSoft on and off again depending on the time of day, lunar cycles and ambient temperature in  Antarctica.

I hope that answers your question.

OP, I am from TC server.

Each friday and saturday nights there is a huge queue for enter WvW. Currently, Divinity's Reach and Queensdale are overflow zones each night, but there is an event happening there. Yesterday night I wandered some middle level zones looking for baloons, that zones where not empty. Too there are a lot of people that is farming that pinatas at the instance living world event zone. I guess that when this event end we will see huge zergs following the commander icons hunting champions.

Orr zones have no baloons from the current living world events... and baloons are free loot, they have a chest on top of stairs...

I have 5 toons level 80... so, go look for that level 80 players at the lower zones, because it is where I and all other level 80 toons are while that baloons are around. EVeryone is farming at Divinity's Reach.

[By the way, not saying you are lying, but how you logged yesterday and not received a mail saying there is an event happening at Divinity's Reach? These living world events have mails that say to players where go for participate... I am too sure that if you asked to map chat at Orr someone where to say you everyone is at Divinity's Reach...

but not worry, from August 23rd through August 25th GW2 will have a free weekend and EVERYONE will see if you are saying the truth or if you are a liar...]

Well, GW2 remains populated by thought only, when ANet proclaimed their servers as Heavy, Very Heavy or Full, etc.  They change those values periodically.  The quantifiers only have reference to how other servers are doing, and no revelation to actual population.

It wasn't a very social game to begin with, so why worry about numbers?  Enjoy the time you spend.  Would it make you feel better if you saw other people standing around doing dynamic (themepark) quests, even if you don't converse?

GW2 goes into the hall of fame as one of the best solo player MMORPG's.

OP - Seriously, if you want other players to interact with you might try another game, then you won't feel alone.

This is what happens with free to play games, they have no real drive to keep providing new content and good end game.

Lol, it all have to do with the new champion rewards. 1 third of the players is running queens pavilion right now (it will soon be gone though), 1 third is champion farming Queensdale and the rest are in WvW.

Try Frostgourge though, it usually have more players, particularly when Claw of Jormags spawning window is up.

I have a feeling things will go back to normal pretty soon, but they should nerf the rewards from the low level champions, it is silly that you can earn as much in the noob zones as in the top level zones, particularly since the risk is very low in the low level zones.

You had some bad luck, this started a week ago... But people have been farming the temples of Orr a long time now so they are happy to earn their loot somewhere else for once.

And the dungeon reward boost wasn't enough to get players run them more since you get 3 times the cash on the current farming rounds. Yeah, MMO players are pretty greedy. :)

Really? GW2 have added more free content than any other MMO I played the first year and I have been playing MMOs since 1996.

The endgame do need some work though, I can agree about that. For one thing I want my friggin guild Vs guild PvP. Hopefully will PvE become more interesting with the promised updates they set up for the rest of the year.

The real problem with GW2s endgame is however that the game was supposed to be harder, they nerfed the difficulty down a lot after the first 2 beta weekend because people whined. Zones like Orr can get annoying since there are so many mobs with short pop time but they aren't that hard unless too few people do a group event.

     ....

Yeah, that must be why I always have to wait so long to get into the WvW. Seriously, most PvE players are doing the living story right now, the loot there is awesome and it is easy as well (not the Queens gauntlet though, some of the fights there are really hard).

You didnt make it far into the endgame zones if you are claiming to not see anyone. I farm on TC, DB, and JQ FOR THE REASON of they are so packed. When farming champs, you need lots of people to upscale the trash mobs/ veteran mobs to Champs to make good money. Give me abit, i'm going to go to your server and take pictures for you.

Here ya go. This is one Champ. Just one. There are groups like this covering the high level zones, at each and every champ. You can't even see all the people here because of culling and it's clear there's alot. This is your server, Tarnished Coast.

Welcome to horizontal progression. Where people at max level realize there is nothing meaningful to do and quit.

Your post looks all the more silly coming after mine, where i just pop in game and take a snapshot of people everywhere. But yeah, game's dead, no one plays it, you should just forget about it already and move on, eh?

that's right, it is completely silly. Browsing the forums, see this clearly incorrect post, say "Hey, i'll prove you wrong, on your own server", hop in game and take a screenshot in less than 10 minutes(of an area that isn't even the focal point of the living story at the moment, that'd be Crown Pavilion) showing people all over ONE CHAMP (Do you know how many champs spawn in these events?) this is a lone, wandering champ, outside of an event, and it has THIS many people on it.

What, you think i bounced maps begging people to get together to make the game look good? You're silly too.

As you level, more and more of the world opens up to you as a viable playground for your character.  You don't have to think of it as the level 75-80 zones being where the level 75-80 characters belong.  Level 80 characters have things to do in every zone from 1 to 80.  As such, a potential problem with this system is that the player population may become so spread out that players feel isolated and alone.  That's remedied by a few systems.

The core system that permeates every zone is the event system.  These, along with other map completion hotspots, guide players to the same locations so players within the same zone are bound to bump into each other.  They act as beacons to signal players within a large radius, who may otherwise never have noticed each other, to gather together for a period of time.

The other system has been the constant living story updates.  Every couple weeks, the vast majority of players flood to the new hotspot zones to participate in the new content together.  Because the entire world is relevant to level 80 characters, the living story may use any zone it wants to highlight.  I think this is one of the living story's greatest strengths; every other week, and for a few days after, the game has the air of an expansion.  Excitement is in the air as players flock to explore the new content together.  And they get to do it in a variety of GW2's absolutely gorgeous zones.
