I watched the announcement video of Everquest Next and I'll be returning with a new computer to play this game. When Eq2 came out I did the same thing. Now, I didn't find EQ 2 innovative enough (hi expectations yes) but I see this new game as something brand new.
I'm excited at the prospects of this new SOE game. Where a lot of people have been eager to express disappointment in SOE products over the years what I've seen were consistiently good products. If I were not so hooked on Eve online I may be biding my time in one of the worlds available w station pass.
I think people need to see this game as an innovation in the genre. I mean, really, all they need to give me is a couple haunted houses and I'll be hooked.

I think SOE is on the right track as far as replacing WoW as the top fantasy mmo in the western markets at least. They still got some huge hurdles to jump before that happens. The big question is if a sandbox can appeal to the mass market of players who have never'ed played one before. What is known is that WoW cannot be beaten doing the same kind of mmo. EQ Next could be the different kind of mmo many are looking for but they only got certain amount of time before project Titan comes out, any case if the sandbox is well made Ill be happy even if it becomes a niche game.
That is true EQN really looks like the next generation of MMOs. (Unless you take the word "look" literally. The characters are a different story.)
SOE is injecting new life into a stagnant and dying genre. Their affords to innovate can not be praised enough.
With the voxel-grafics and StoryBricks they have two very powerful tools at their hands. I hope they will put them to good use.
