I'm just wondering if some of you could shed some light on this for me.
I literally started following this game about a week ago - but after reading/watching every bit of info I could find, and hearing a lot of positive opinions, I've become pretty sucked in by FFXIV and have pre-ordered. Now, I didn't give 1.0 the time of day and know next to nothing about FFXIV's development history (aside from its univerally loathed launch).
Given that we've all experienced and probably fallen victim to an MMO's pre-release hype, what I want to know is - in these days leading up to launch, how does the general mood of the community, the hype, compare to the days leading up to 1.0? I guess what I'm worried about is that all of the glowing 'reviews' I've been seeing for AAR were there for 1.0 as well, and we all know how that turned out. Or, leading up to 1.0, was the vast majority actually screaming to SE not to release?
There's a lot that I like and that I'm excited about for FFXIV, I'm just a little unsure if history is about to repeat itself.

The reviews for the original where pretty bad :P

check that one if you feel like it.
Having been with this game since beta of the original version,
I'd say square enix owned up to their mistake and more then fixed it.
I don't think history will repeat itself since most of the original game's problems
(sluggish unusable UI, lack of content) have already been dealt with.
Being a 1.0 CE holder and in a lot of the 1.0 Beta's this is light years ahead of 1.0 launch for quality. Yes there were a ton of threads in the 1.0 Beta forums saying that the game needed lots of work and they kept promising us a miracle patch on launch that would fix everything.
The only real things I would worry about would be a reoccurrence of the Errors 3102 and 90000. 3102 seemed to be licked with last down time from people I talked to so it should just be 90000 which they will hopefully squash by EA start on the 24th. Well I guess I should also say I might worry a bit about a recurrence of lag do to the servers being overloaded but hopefully they have a better handle on how many servers they are going to need now.
I am not sure what these forums were like during 1.0 though so I cant compare there. Only just started frequenting them for FFXIV news and now to follow other games.
I was around for the the pre-release for 1.0 and over-all mood is quite different this time around. Sure there are nay-sayers this time around too, but not to the extent of 1.0's launch, nor for the same reasons.
FFXIV 1.0 had a horrid mouse/keyboard interface and it really lacked an over direction. The were dozens of threads about how "This is only beta, it will be fixed in launch." However, things weren't fixed. To me, that is the difference this time around. If you look around these forums, you do not see people saying: "This is flat out broken," or "I ran out of Levequests, now what?" I might be stuck on the negative here, but I seem to remember more negative responses out-weighing the positive with 1.0's initial release.
The overall tone of those who do not like the game this time is not because "the game itself is suffering from an unfinished development time," or "the devs didn't listen or fix anything." Now those who do not like the game, do not like it simply because it does not suit their play style. We have a complete product this time around, and it is very clear in it's direction. However, you are the only one who knows whether or not the product or direction it takes is suited for you.
In summation, the overall tone this time around seems much more positive, while 1.0's pre-release was much more negative. We have a lot more of the "this game is awesome," and virtually zero "this game is broken and doomed to fail." responses.
It didn't have early access, but it did have closed beta and open beta, both of which I was in.
So did this game.
The amount of changes between this game and 1.0 are so much that it can be considered a totally different game, so no I don't really believe that, but I can see why others would.
