It's best just to recognise that fact, and that people like to be mildly masochistic and therefore come here for that fact.

Oh, I agree that we're a rather jaded bunch, however the question was rather rhetorical, as the answer is that he needs our money. It's the only time he ever comes here.

As far as the occasional comment about the engine is concerned, it always gives me a chuckle because in my mind, I imagine whomever it is sitting down and thinking, "Oh boy, it looks so easy to make this X game with that Y engine!", then ten months later they're realizing that all engine makers make impressive claims about "how easy it is to use their software" to sell their product. That's how the industry works.
Given you get in a flap over an emissive shader I can see how you find this difficult. Maybe showcase some original work and not what you purchased.

Bingo he needs money and while he's here he'd rather spit in our faces while doing so. Ethan is going to turn into Mr. Appleton part 2.
Turning into? Hell, Appleton is following the playbook Ethan wrote! Go back and read the bs on the forum from the 2nd (I think, it may have been third) time he went broke. The great time where he posted going off on the mmorpg mod team for not showing him support. Its sad. I mean this is not even the first time he has proclaimed the game "happened".

Exactly this game was "done" at least twice before, everybody supporting it blindly either weren't around the first few times or can obviously see something the majority of us can't. I really hope Ethan accomplishes his goals because it's nice idea, but there's no way in hell I'm giving money to something that has been nearly done for 6 years when all I've seen about it is a reskinned game engine with a voxel builder I saw two years ago in a different game.

Dunno, mate... there´s no arguing that D:O has still a long way to go, and it´s a statistical fact that most MMOs either never launch, or sink a couple of yards after leaving port. Ethan has still to showcase some very basic features like inventory, character stats & skill, etc, and D:O won´t be anywhere near Beta until we see some combat mechanics in action.
That being said... Ethan never claimed to be developing an entirely new engine; of course he´s using a third party tool for that (the Ineisis/Esenthel engine in this case). And when, back in April, he showcased D:O for the first time on the Esenthel forums, he got some solid thumbs up.
Even the Forum Administrator says:
Pretty amazing The 3d models look very pro, I like the style of your art alot. It's cool to see decent performance with so much grass/trees and a big view range.
And everybody in that forum are developers using the same engine, which makes that thread quite a solid peer review. Note that was back in April, for the Indiegogo campaign; he wasn´t showing block construction in its current state.
I mean: no disrespect, mate; I´m not a programmer myself, but I kinda think that if those guys over there are impressed, then it´s not quite fair to dismiss what Ethan is showing by saying "Bah, already saw this two years ago". Needless to say, I agree 100% that this doesn´t prove Ethan can pull off the rest of the game; but he did deliver on his Indiegogo promise to give the community a playable version of the construction mechanic.
As discussed on other threads, he´s now focusing on combat (and doing so because he asked the community which feature we´d like to see next). As far as I´m concerned, that´s the stress test: if he manages to pull an adequate, playable prototype in the next few months, then I´d say D:O has a fairly decent chance.

Hmm not suprised to see the morons trolling again on this site. Honestly why does no one these days appreciate the fact someone is willing to speak openly rather tip toeing around what people will think? Honestly one of the main reasons I donated right off the bat was the fact he does not tip toe around and try and make everyone happy. That is one of the prime reasons mmo have failed in this day in age. The moment a huge company gets enough whining from the community they begin to try and make everyone happy. With a person like Ethan behind a true sandbox game like this its honestly the best thing that could happen. He won't change things 3 months into the game to please the carebears, he also won't deal with the kids who think they're badass because they can sit at a spawn and continue to screw with new players. All in all its the best of both worlds but people can't accept the fact he won't ruin his game as blizzard, bioware, and soe have on EVERY piece of **** they have made.
But people will be as closed minded as they have always been until one of two things happens.
#1 they get hit over the head with a brick and end up like "special fred"
1) Having a person make 1 post on the forum that defends a project while attacking those who dislike the project is not at all strange...
2) I don't know how you can make a post like the OP and think people are going to rally around you vs attacking or laughing at you.
3) I generally love to support indie games, well released ones, and the OP made me never want to look at this thing.
4) Grammar is important: "FACT: The ratio of supports to haters is so low that " That would suggest that there are few supporters and lots of haters. If you instead said the ratio of haters to supports it so low.... then that would indicate that there are few haters and lots of supports. When saying "the ratio of" the first thing mentioned is the first number and the second thing mentioned is the second number. A low first number to a high second number is a low ratio. A high first number to a low second number would be a high ratio. You're welcome.

Once again calling it vaporware from what you "read" on the fourms means you never full inspected crap. If you were to actually do any research you would see the current game is being updated 3-10x a day depending on how fast the programers can get things coded. Wich is more then can be said about certain indie games who have made 10x or more money from kickstarter and still have nothing but a few screenshots to show. For example look at the indie game greedmonger. They had a huge ammount of cash dumped into it and have a large team of coders. Yet they cant even get the closed alpha up and running within what is it now 6 or 7 months sense the kickstarter was finished? Where as DO has had it up and running for almost a full month and completed all the things that were promised in the indiegogo with less the a quarter of the funding and people working on the project. So go ahead and keep shooting your mouth off without any kind of research.

Vaporware is a term in the computer industry that describes a product, typically computer hardware or software, that is announced to the general public but is never actually released nor officially cancelled.
Divergence is exactly what the industry definition for vaporware explains. It's a product publicly announced that has never been released nor cancelled. Duke Nukem Forever was originally the longest running vaporware product.
In addition the information that Ethan has released for his product is old news repackaged. Don't believe everything you see from him.
Sorry Once again you failed to read the product info. The reason you might believe its simply repackage is understandable. The origonal engine that was used is not the same as the one being worked on at the current time. This is the cause for alot of the delay in some of updates. While yes alot of the products seen in the current phase of the game are from an older engine and require the coders to update alot of the older stuff so that it will work with the new engine, there is new stuff being discovered that he has found that this new engine has allowed that he previously had no access to. Such as the ability for copying the player made structures and making it capable for players to sell copies of what they have created to the ingame public. Now if you did any kind of research into this game rather then simply deciding that you wished to troll the forums from skimming over the info available you would realize that your words are wasted on ANYONE who might have a thought process large enough to think for themselves.
Anyone else remember that movie "Idiocracy"? Loved it btw and highly recommend watching it because when I hear people doing their best to repurpose words to their own ends, I immediately think of that movie. One such instance is the one or two people I see trying to shoehorn the term "vaporware" into meaning "I have an irrational dislike of a random product I have never tried and somehow feel my opinion is valid."

I imagine that'll merit a warm reaction of moderate confusion, then blanket disregard as people go on about their evening ^_^
If you can pay for it and play it that same day, it isn't vaporware. If you disagree, you are wrong.

Can you name the MMOs that I've complained about? I've got almost 10k posts, so if they exist, it shouldn't be hard to find at a couple dozen, right? How about this... find two.
I noticed your last 10 posts (didn't look back any further) were all negative comments about other posters, as well, so I'll just chalk your post up to consistency.
Send the reply in PM so we don't further sidetrack this fine thread.
Congrats on your almost 10k posts, really extraordinary! Man, this is my 2nd account (first one orig in like '06) and I don't have 50 combined!!
Anywho, I can't find it in myself to just PM the results of 3 second search about your negativity. The very first post I saw in your history was exceptionally brutal to Xyson. You even mentioned Xyson and Divergence in the same sentence!
Don't worry about it, it's okay if you don't remember
I'm glad you brought that post up. It lists the differences between a solid project like The Repopulation and things like Divergence and Xsyon. That you see my response to Gintoh as complaining is a perspective issue on your part, as I aired no grievances about or resentment toward Xsyon or Divergence.
Cheers, bro
