    Linkshells are like private chat channels.  You can be in more than one and can be in them all at the same time.

    Free companies are traditional guilds basically.

    However, there is no thread about it on the first page (or 2nd page either I think), and that means my post contributed to diversifying this forum.

    With that said, what are the technical differences between linkshells and frees? I mean, couldnt a linkshell operate in the same way as a free company (meeting up, doing raids etc)?

    Free companies offer advantages such as guild emblems (which to my understanding can be applied to gear), housing, storage, and buffs (like increased xp gain).

    How do I start a linkshell? My char is in Gridania.

    There's a NPC each of the major cities that sells them.  If I remember right the one Gridania (or however it's spelled) is by the moogle mail carrier.

    Linkshells are also completely free to create. Just talk to the NPC, type the name and you are done. Free Companies on the other hand, contrary to their name, are definitely not free to create. :)

    That sounds like a lot. Sounds like a typical method for frees to form is by having linkshells first and then collecting gil together to form a free?
