I have two questions I can't seem to find clear information on. First, If there crafting in this game? If so, how does it work? Can one engage in all crafting fields or just one. Second, Can one toon do everything? Are alts, needed? Thanks.

there definitelly is a crafting
it work quite similar to the vanguard one (but imo is even better) - you have certain amount of points (durability) you can spend increasing either quality or progress and you are trying to finish the item with as high a quality as possible. the only problem (at least for me) is that each piece of crafted item has only 1 versions - standard and high quality (quality you get in the crafting minigame only increase chance (%) of getting HQ version + it gives more xp) and you can usually get HQ version in decent time when you know what you are doing.
you can have all adventuring, crafting and harvesting classes on the same char and freely switch between them by just simply switching primary tool/weapon equipped in your main hand
only reason for alts is the story, where you have differences based on starting town, GC you choose etc.

Yep. Just like Arenanet halted online GW2 sales for a few days during its launch phase, too. I expect sales will resume after the server upgrade this Wednesday.

1. Crafting is as big as adventuring or Gathering. They are Classes not just tacked on click and wait interfaces.
2. Crafting works like fighting, just that you fight for progress, quality. You can use skills from your current profession or some skills from other professions you learned. I recommend to get a variety of Crafting classes to 15 to get some of the better skills (cooking has a very essential one for example)
3. You can do everything on one character. EVERYTHING that the game has to offer.
BEWARE: You will have to progress in the main story to get access to airships so you can visit other cities and get teleportation.
I am finding sites out there have been caught off guard with the demand for FF14 info. Usually sites are out way in advance, fully polished and just waiting for hoards of peeps looking for info but in this case, they are as unprepared as SE has been for the explosive success of FF14.

Fair warning: enjoy your last few days in GW2. as once you log into FFIV:ARR you'll never log out again. <--- get the pun, lol.
Honestly this mmo is so good i've really no interest or time for other ones anymore, this is reminiscent of back in the SWG EQ(2) days where i just played those and not much else. Once eq2 went downhill in 2008 been looking for the one, and think i've found it.
