OP, i think you are confusing WoW addons with full fledged mods.
Addons in WoW are only for gameplay convenience while a full mod is something you see in games like Skyrim where you can get a mod that expands the story or the game content itself, significantly increasing the replayability value of the game.
There are no addons in WoW that do such thing so nobody would play WoW just to use some addons. They are cool (i had more than 15 installed) but they are by no means the reason why i play the game. Just convenience.
Edit: in Skyrim i have more than 100 mods installed that make a lot of difference from the vanilla game. I never get tired of that game even when i take long breaks i still love it and even more with mods which make the entire game feel fresh again.
Sure, we follow your thinking. Pink Floyd and Elvis and ABBA all sold lots of records.
Must be due entirely to their similarities.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I can see why people wanted to look at Minecraft, but why the heck would anyone play that for more than a few days? Talk about a bland, boring game.....I guess some people always have their childhood lego memories and this is as close as they can get in a video game to that.
WoW got so popular for common sense reasons. Marketing! Parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles could physically touch the box and pay for it. It was a gift. It, many times, had its own display box away from other titles. Subscriptions could be payed up months in advance and soccer moms told other soccer moms about it. The tv and radio ads alone sell the game. Plus, if you remember the original ads made it sound like WoW was the first MMORPG and they had created the concept.
Do you know where your kids are? Yeah, glued to the pc. Out breaking windows? No. Outside with the weirdos and predators? No. Many parents jumped at the chance. Plus it was cheaper than buying the new xbox and ps2 games every month in what? 2004? Perfect babysitter for x amount each month. Sad, but true.
I mean this in the nicest way possible but you have NO idea what you're talking about.
If a game itself at it's core isn't good on it's own it won't generate anyone to Mod the game. No one is going to put effort into a game if there isn't a large playerbase that will use the Mods they create.
You're looking at this completely wrong... Without going into much detail or a paragraph on why both games are so successfull. WoW was different and a blockbuster for it's time, Minecraft was something completely new to everyone and very creative.
Both offered two unique and different things for their time. This in-turn attracted people to Mod the game.
It does not have to be stated that both Wow and minecraft are both good games at their core. The OP is assuming we already understand that and his point is that the mods took them to the next level of popularity.
