[Preview] Dragon's Prophet: Inartia Rising

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Dragon's Prophet will be expanding soon with a new landmass called "Inartia" and some features that are sure to please players in big ways. We spoke with the DP team at PAX Prime and have a preview of the expansion you won't want to miss. Read on before heading to the comments to discuss the changes.

The new expansion will also bring a new Dragon Chamber feature so players can keep far more dragons than the current 12 (6 active in stable and 6 in the lair). How many? Up to 100 and the first “row” of 10 is free. The great big feature that Inartia brings, however is the Frontier system which consists of three sub-systems, Alliances, High Lords and Mounted Combat.

I like action combat, but the execution of it in this game just feels really floaty. If they refined it more I'd be more apt to play.

The game PR people use DAOC terminology and that got my attention.I will take a serious look at the game after the 9/18 patch.I wish there was A LOT more information about the frontier...crafting and housing.

I checked further and crafting.....IS DEEP.

Still, all those problems are nothing they can't remedy with a little effort.  If they got less greedy with their monetization and polished their existing systems to make them a little more intriguing, engaging, and thoughtful, then this game would be a real gem. It definitely has its own style and would fit in alongside SoE's other titles nicely.

Tossing in my coin as well. I gave it a spin and it felt as if they almost had it. That feeling was frustrating.

I have been playing for a few weeks on and off and the game still has a lot of ground to cover.

Animations and combat feel weird and not very action oriented at all. Cash shop dominates all and example of it bleeding into the game is having one of the daily goals be opening the Cash Shop window and the other needs you to send 3 friend gifts but the gifts can only be acquired by purchasing in the cash shop.

The crafting and harvesting part of the game is mediocre.

The dragon part also needs work and the way it was implemented sucks. Once a player captures a dragon it will lose its original size and once summoned(which is timed and stat driven) it won't be the original size we all saw before.

And to finish off the world is a huge corridor. At least the area I am in is one big corridor with the starter town being in a dead end. Not really open world material.

    I wont touch it.

It is, because i saw 1 picture and i knew, i can ride a horse and can have a sword.

    <saw the vid now>

Dont like the engine, looks so lens'ish.

The trailer was, what i expected, the world looks like every other fantasy world, as if they all share a common fantasyworld fantasy.

Aircombat, well, depends on how its done, can be for sure some nice "new" feature, but what we saw from other games with airial combat in medevil scenarios, was'nt so outstanding.

Im sorry to say that, but its the same blurb we had many times before.

I want to know, why "new" games must always look like old games ...

Btw, i dont saw anything i dont have in Tera right now and the aircombat feature ... well i can go without that.

they keep releasing and announcing stuff for this game. I keep loggin in, nobody is playing, then i log out.

2 days ago i went to 2 or 3 maps and i found 1 person in one of the maps. I dont enjoy single player mmos. They really needed to wait before releasing this game to the public.

I must say I like what I read here. Is these frontier islands etc instanced, or in the open world? How open is the open world btw? Is it as crazy instanced like Neverwinter, or more open like GW2? And is it open world PVP everywhere, or just in some zones?

Basicly the game splits into two parts. PvE isnlands (areas, continents...) and PvP islands. The PvP only work in PvP islands (frontiers). It is instanced zones (accurately it is separated to PvE zones/islands) but the PvP features (like area reservations, castle attack) not instanced!

Ergo: You play normal PvE islands (quests, instances, regular PvE contents.) BUT are you able to teleport the PvP Islands (this areas sizes similar with PvE areas, only just a bit smaller) and are you build houses, fight other players, reserve areas, form alliances, caste sieges, become Lord, etc.... But this features NOT instance, everything is happening this islands "live".

So, for example if you don't join a alliance but if you enter the frontier zone, are you able to watch tho opposite fraction fight.

Simply. Just imagine: it would be in WoW,  Eastern Kingdoms a PvE and Kalimdor is PvP Zone. :D

This game is a shining jewel laying infront of your feet in the mud. Pick it up, clean it and see it for what it is.

    I have a 70 warrior and a 45 ranger...its really fun to play/ fight.

Important to join a guild so you can use flutes for getting dragons in the guildhall. Also the world is big since you can fly everywhere. Do the dayli public quests for xp. Crossed swords are the symbol on the map for them. Training your dragon and give it the skills you want is fun also.

Its ftp, but I am happy to buy some diamonds and spend some for a game like this. Atleast you will want to have room for more dragons both on you and in your lair.

I have played most MMOs since EQ2, and this is a good one. I was really surprised in a good way since it was a FTP.

    No character wipe at launch.

Youtube has significantly more info about the game.

Only in the housing area, I believe.

I don't understand why they are releasing so much for a Beta, all those loyal players that are at max and want to play to a higher cap will eventually be bored of the game before it is even released. The only thing i can think of is there is already a cash shop going on in Beta?Personally like another poster,i saw very few players,i think i saw maybe 5 in total so even if a cash shop is going, they won't be making enough money to warrant making new content.

I guess it is possible this game is doing well in Korea and the SOE version is just a contract being fulfilled, but with so few players ,it won't be going on beyond the current contract length.

I know the developers Runes of Magic had a ton of early success,so perhaps they were hoping to get lucky again in the NA market.I actually played ROM and liked it ,so i decided to try Dragon's Prophet.I think if there was a population more would be willing to give it a longer try and see.I have no idea how they could entice players but in ROM they offered really powerful event gear sets and that seemed to work quite well.

How is the actuall PVP then? Or combat in generall? And do you just send your pet at a target and then he's on his own? Or can you throw different commands etc? I've read that there is alot of button mashing. IS there any skill to the PVP or just TAB-target and then mash away?
  • RzepRzep Member UncommonPosts: 767

The PvP is done on the Housing Islands which are pretty large landmasses. As for the game itself, I like it. It is very rough and released too early, but it is fun and thats what matters to me the most. The developers have also shown that they can patch the game and add new content at a pretty satysfying rate.

Comparing the development speed and quality at this stage to the Devs last game it's clear to see that they have learned alot.

  • RzepRzep Member UncommonPosts: 767
Well its active combat so no its not tab targeting.

Just to clarify, yes you do need to open the cash shop window, however you do not need to purchase friends' gifts from only the cash shop. You can craft them yourself; purchase cookies from an npc vendor or purchase gifts from the auction house.

But a better example of cash heavy is you begin with only 2 dragon and 2 stable slots. The rest need to be purchased as does the extra dragon storage they recently introduced (beyond the first free row). The backpack is limited with free rows at level 10; 20 and 30 but with all the crafting  and quest items (many do not stack and require several items for one quest), your pack and bank soon become full, almost forcing you to purchase more slots if you are anywhere near a pack rat or multi-crafter..

Exactly. Way, WAY too early.  Hell, the client doesn't even auto scale its resolution (which means the controls are off the screen).  They have missed too many details for it to be forced out right now.  The combat system is fun, but from the sounds of it, those who focused on Charisma to be able to capture dragons, and extend their combat time are going to get hammered with this new system.

I really like the game. It is the only MMO that has really held my attention in quite some time. I like the combat, crafting, and of course, the dragons.

BTW, implementing draconic influence as the capture stat, has been live for some time now. You no longer need  to build your character around the charisma stat to capture ancient dragons. DI is on jewelry that is dropped or crafted. Now you can carry a second set of earrings, rings, and a necklace for the DI stat (which can be problematic due to limited bag space, see below)

An issue that severly affects folks that won't/can't pay is the very limited bag, bank, lair, and dragon slots. It is so limiting, that if you aren't willing to pony up some cash for some slots, you may just end up quitting from frustration. I think I spent around $30 to get my slots to my liking.

Other than the slots, I have yet to see anything you need to buy from the marketplace. Most everything is purchasable with another type of currency that you get from doing daily quests. Yes, it will take some time to save up 1k for a mastery reset as you can only get 100 per day, but it is free.

The developers, Runewaker are Chinese (Taiwan) not Korean.

It is only a mid-size studio, so maybe it has difficulty handling two MMORPG (Rom and DP) in production at the same time.
