Do you actually get anything if you return? It sounds like you do, according to the text of the email:
Starting September 12, when you rejoin the battle, you will be immediately rewarded with the first Digital Expansion: Rise of the Hutt Cartel and 500 Bonus Cartel Coins so you can continue your adventure up to Level 55 free of charge and be well equipped for your new adventure! Plus, reactivate your subscription through October 20, 2013, and receive the JA-3 Subversive Battle Droid Mini-Pet, and JA-3 Subversive Speeder for rejoining the battle!
But in practice, nope, only if you return and subscribe.
And yes, many other games do give inactive players (or even current players) things for free. EQ2 makes expansions free after a while, at least parts of them. Other F2P games have given store credits (since it's not like it costs them anything)

I had the same email and thought I would log in and check it out which just reminded me why I do not play SWTOR any more.
I get this one time verification code emailed to me and that does not work. I cannot get another. they have no email CS Support and i'll be damned if I am going to ring them and wait for 2 hours on the phone. The other option is to contact them ingame, which I cannot do.
How can this company be so inept at running a game is beyond me and I for one will not be checking out the game. This was an issue when they started the one time verification a while ago and it still doesn't work so if they cannot fix that, I dare say the game hasn't faired any better since I quit either.
Got the e-mail too. Its now in the wastebasket.

Yes I find it very misleading, in fact I had a problem with my SWTOR account which I have not played in years since BETA due to the fact that the devs were so slow at fixing bugs clearly reported to them, and have not put in actual character customization and skins like Rift, Aion, Guild Wars 2, ROM, and many RPG's today have but SWTOR doesn't have a costume section to choose what armor you want as you're appearance.
Anyways I went to the forums to ask a question if this game has it and guess what I could not start a new thread, so I called the company on the phone and asked them they said this. " You have to be a subscriber to use our forums" I was totally feeling like raging at them because this is complete bull there should be forums for non subscribers too but there isn't.
As a result I sent my question in to their player support but I know their answer is likely going to be no you can't do this in this game yet.
Honestly SWTOR is looking like a game I don't ever want to play yes it has been improved by a few changes here and there, but other games such as Rift offer more content for FREE, and for you're buck, Plus player housing is awesome. For Space Battles if I really wanted to do such Star Citizen will be out in a year or two, and other RPG titles that are due to be released will likely be better than SWTOR anyways.
Yes these type of mails are very misleading by the company I got an email just like this a few days ago I installed it, game looked very bad and boring to me I just could not get myself past level 20 since beta because of how much the game lacks and what it should have.
Was that the e-mail that had a video that didn't work?
The headline is very misleading but the terms at the bottom make it pretty clear you have to sub to get the rewards. Is anyone really surprised that EA isn't giving something away for free ?
Pay us $15 and we will give you this for FREE!!
It is "free" in the sense that people had to pay 10$ over their sub for it, and theres already quite a few threads demanding "cartel coins for everyone that paid for ROTHC and not crappy title".
But not really free, no.
Good thing is you have it unlocked even if you drop sub in the future.

It's EA, did you expect anything else from them?
Stage 1: $25: RotHC + 1 month sub
Stage 2: $15 RotHc + 1 month sub
Stage 3: $5 in the cash shop? Maybe?
Stage 4: free.
Got the email as well, went right the official forums to see what the actual player base is saying...
1. tickets being closed in mass for promotional "bring a friend" program for the devs not fulfilling the promotion.
2. bugs still not fixed sense launch, arguable to a point depending on the person, but multiple threads from different people on different bugs.
3. devs not listening to the community, no big surprise there , never did before
4. ugly huge clipping shoulder pads still being added to new armor releases
5. black dye costing $20.00 in cash, (Yikes! red flag there)
The list goes on , sadly it seems like Warhammer someone in EA or Bioware that leads this stuff wants it to fail. Everything being done will make it fail, not obviously to an executive that might ask " so what are you doing to bring in subs" , but behind their backs making those actions fail. I was actually considering checking it out, after 2 hours on their forums , no way, game is definitely dead to me.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Dont think it will ever be completely free.
Probably "preferred players promotion now includes ROTHC", so at least 5$ included.
Or it may be bundled with something else, like "buy this speeder for 20$ and get ROTHC FOR FREE"
^^^^
Oh I agree that there will be other steps first, what you suggest could be stage 3 and then maybe $5 in the cash shop. At the end though I see the final promotion as being an attempt to get old F2P accounts to return by offering it to everyone. They gave away the full game after all.
Yes, forgot, if they ever manage to pull off another level cap raise they will probably make it completely free.
Yes, many games give incentives for subscribing, as does SWTOR.
Yes, many games give freebies to subscribers, as does SWTOR.
Yes, many games give their expansions free after a while, SWTOR has just done this in the last few weeks.
Not sure what the point of this thread is...
