I have been skeptical and critical of this game since launch. I bought it almost 2 weeks ago. I played it a little bit and then stopped. I have the weekends off. So I decided to give it more hardcore game time. I was pleasantly surprised.
It was like putting on a old pair of shoes. If you take your time through it. It really is a great game. I love going back to the holy trinity system. The crafting is the best I have seen. I felt more accomplished crafting my lvl 15 gear. Than getting 80 gear on GW2. Playing with a 360 controller was a awesome change. I was surprised how easy it was to navigate through the interface. It is also nice to not have a real money market.
After reading up on the upcoming updates. I am very excited to continue playing this game. Thumbs up for not following the free to play trend. Hopefully it never has to.
Now...back..to playing

I was lucky enough to be in the beta and able to test it inside out for a decent amount of time, which allowed me to save the purchase price of this game. Just not for me... the art style, the gameplay, the general design of the game just isn't my cup of tea.
Glad you enjoy it though, I hope it will last ;-)
My computer is better than yours.
I have lot's of mmo's that sit there in waiting. lol I have come to terms that there will not be a mmo "home" for me. I get on my rolls and then hop on another. I have liked most of them I have played.
Been using crafted item level 70 tank gear since I hit 50 and I am now working on turn 4 in coil. I use crafted food every single day I log into the game. I also use crafted potions every time I raid. I have needed many crafters to meld my tank, culinarian and botany gear.
Nice try though, but you are doing it wrong. Crafting is alive, well, and used at every turn in this game.
You're both wrong. Crafting is actually a huge part of the game @ 50. More-so than any other "level". At 50 you can make the 2 star items which require matierals obtained through philo-tomes. These 2star items are the best ilvl70 pieces in the game. You also use crafted items (@50) to spirit bind for materia. Which you use on said crafted gear making them very very good.
Id take very little of what DMKano says about FFXIV to seriously. Hes had a hidden axe to grind against FFXIV for some reason.
Crafting is alive, well and definitely used. Also, i agree with the OP. The game really grows on ya if you give it a little effort. Its definitely not as shallow as it appears at first.
It is plenty useful, just not to you. When are people going to get this.../sigh
On topic. The game is a lot of fun. The crafting is fantastic and quite rewarding. Glad you are enjoying it, OP
Might be his first game

I find the more time I spend playing almost any MMO the less inclined I am to paying for it.
So No, how about you learn a little more before spreading false information?
There's 2 star items you can make that can be an involved process if you don't just want to buy/trade everything.
Also, you're forgetting about the multiple classes that people are starting to play now that their main is 50. There's no story and no side quests left for them (unless the player saved them the first time through.) That means if they're not spamming dungeons (which many aren't due to Fate Grind,) they're going to need gear.
You obviously haven't tried selling things on the market. Try putting up a HQ level 20 piece for a reasonable price and see if someone buys it.
How about you tell us which games have better crafting and why you think his statement is a sign of industry standards dropping? Be specific.
Props to the folks who acknowledge this is a good game just not for them. Just like GW2. Great game, just not for everyone. Most of this hate is just people wanting this game to be something its not.
Or they have a pre-ordained narrative and need reality to follow along those lines.
Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, Darkfall 1, Vanguard, EverQuest 2, I don't think I need to do go.
It's a sign of standards dropping because the crafting barely ties into the main game and doesn't do anything new.
I played FF XIV 1.0 and thought that it was one of THE worst games, games mind you, not mmo's specifically, that I have ever played in my 33 years of playing video games.
When ARR was in beta I thought, 'here we go again'. But, being the video game junkie I am, I gave it another chance. If for no other reason, to continue to rip on it. I Refered to 1.0 as 'manure bucket' on my FB page.
ARR is head and shoulders and then some better than 1.0. That is not saying much though, because 1.0 was so terrible.
ARR, on its own merits, is a SOLID mmo. Reminds me of EQ in regards to the combat and dungeons. The crafting is engaging, imho. Graphics are nice. It runs smoothly on my 5 year old pc. Class/Job system is dynamic.
So yea, I was "very surpriesed with FFARR', in a good way.
First) All those games are 5 years or older. If there was a sign that the industry standards are dropping, it would be before now.
Second) I noticed that you haven't gone into detail as to what FF14 crafting you think is bad or to give FF14 such high praise in that department would be indicative of the industry standards dropping.
Ties into the main game? Doesn't do anything new? I noticed that you could make that statement with knowing nothing about how crafting works in FF14. How about you tell us how it doesn't 'fit' into the main game and what the main game is? How about you tell us how it doesn't do anything new because it kind of does. Nothing earth shattering, but FF14 crafting is something that sets itself apart from other MMOs. People also are playing the game and leveling nothing but the DoH and DoL professions. Go ahead and look that up because I know you don't know what I'm talking about.
Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, Darkfall 1, Vanguard, EverQuest 2, I don't think I need to do go.

You can't be serious.
DAOC better crafting? Thats a laugh! We used to mouse machine that while we were away at work or sleeping.

Prior to buying it, i researched it, asked some questions. Overall i had a really good feeling about it, i felt like i'd found the mmo i've been waiting years for, but...
I was recently dipping toes into gaming, mmo's, from a year off as i gave up on em, the crap after crap after hype, seemed the trend was never going to end. Literally gave up, i was waiting for something that was never going to come.
Pre-ordered the game thinking that maybe i was kidding myself, giving myself false hope, seeing something that wasn't there, then i logged in... so yeah i was very surprised with FFARR too. IT'S HERE!!!
