Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn holiday event, "All Saints Wake", will kick off this Friday and run through November 1st. In addition, the team announced that free world transfers will be available beginning October 15th through October 21st.
We’re also pleased to announce that the free World Transfer Service begins tomorrow until Monday, October 21st. Like the name implies, this service allows you to move your character to the World of your choice. So if your friends are playing in a different World, this week is the perfect opportunity to arrange playing in the same World. For more information on World Transfer, please visit The Lodestone to read the guidelines and then proceed to the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station.

Nice!
Well you do not do elemental damage bonuses to monsters and players of different elements so it really does not matter (there are a RARE few that are affected) you cannot cast Cure on an undead monster and cause 500 points of damage to it (in final fantasy reviving or healing a dead monster caused it to die and basically gain free EXP)... there are no phoenix downs to use (only revive spell)
PVP will be rather easy to accomplish in this, but as for it being a true final fantasy... no it's not really...
It's a decent game, though exploitable (players can exploit the system but its not worth it... ruins the fun of the game)
I am looking forward to the free server transfer because i have friends on different servers before who misread the server i was on, so at least this will fix it, hope they tweak the data a bit too to make the exploiting harder.
also, Gold farmers aren't as vast as they used to be, which is a great thing.
Which actually makes even less sense, seeing how Eorzea is struggling against the Empire and the Three grand Companies are getting together to form a single front against the imminent threat.
Just like Richard Garriott tried to make sense of PVP in Tabula Rasa back then?
Sometimes they just add PVP for the sake of adding PVP. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Arena PVP would make sense in Lore, as they can use the Coloseum as one of the locations for it, perfectly fitting within the lore regarding champion PVP tournaments.
The frontline PVP just doesn't make sense at all, as each Grand Company is already struggling at their own borders keeping the Empire out and trying to reach out to eachother to form a United front against the Empire once more.
This ^
It'll be interesting to see how PvP will unfold, because so far I honestly think it'll be kinda crappy.
As you point out, 3 faction PvP is going to have the huge problem that nearly everybody picked Ul'dah as their GC. Limsa is about 2/3-3/4 as popular, and almost no one chose Gridania. The population will be so skewed that it will be Facerolling Ul'dah vs. everyone else.
As for the arena, they'll have to drastically change how some classes work if it'll be even remotely playable. For example, look at black mage. Huge damage, but no mobility. Melee can just spin circles around them & interrupt all of their good attacks, healers can heal for more than the best BLM can dish out, and bards can just spam arrows while circle strafing. The way the combat works in this game currently just isn't fluid enough to really be viable. It'll basically be DRG, SMN, BRD, SCH > everyone else.
