Lord of the Rings Online: Developer Diary Discusses Incoming Class Changes

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The latest Lord of the Rings Online developer diary focuses on changes coming to most classes with the release of the Helm's Deep expansion later this fall. To give the quick and dirty, the team has produced a highlight video.

Beginning at level 6, Trait Trees offer a selection of powerful Specializations (Specs) that enhance your character.

You gain more Trait Points by leveling-up and completing Deeds, and higher levels unlock additional builds to switch between when outside combat.

Each class has unique Specs that embody a clear combat style, whether it's the Minstrel healing Spec or the Champion Morale tank Spec. As you allocate points you'll receive several bonuses, like enhanced passives, new powerful Skills, and significant Skill upgrades.

Those looking for more in depth information can head to the Lord of the Rings Online site.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What I enjoyed from that video was the faster animation speeds and more responsive skills. LOTRO combat was always to slow and dull for me.

So, the standard, boring tree-concept it is. I think we can kiss goodbye to any builds that are even the least is mixed and fun... just as the bards, they'll lbe laid off in Nov.

Nice gesture from Turbine that they'll leave 3 legendaries to us, though we'll able to reach one at the time (and that would be easy only with a pure build even, if you try hybrid without additional class trait points... no legendary). That's exactly why we earned those skills I guess, to keep only three of them.

Also great to see that the previously hinted 20 wasn't a random number, "combat skills will go down to around 20 for a traitline-dedicated build and 25 or so for a hybrid build" (put away those NDA comments, it was on Massively :) )

20 skills at lvl95... while you have now around 15 (depends on class) at lvl20. Nah, it won't be dumb or boring to fight only with those 20, not at all :)

    responsiveness and animation needed attention.

I'm bemused about this. Does this mean the talent tree is only accessible if you are a premium player or have purchased the expansion?

Combat overhaul:   Yes!   Ive been complaining about this for years.  After GW2 combat , the combat in LOTRO feels like watching paint dry.

Reduced skills:!  Yes   So many bars of skills.   Reduce them and get rid of the clutter. Only x amount are used on a regular basis.  More skills doesnt equal a better game as some would have you believe.

Skill Trees:   Not sure about this one.  From what I saw there is not a huge variety in skills or , as they claim "lots of growth".  I think about the skill tree in Path of Exile when I hear skill tree and this just seems pale in comparison. We shall see.

I still have a 60 day time card, maybe it is time to use it. I like LotRO for the most part.

I don't know, the combat skill-autoattack-skill-autoattack system (basically speaking) worked well. It rewarded smoothness, flow and rhythm. Skills tree doesn't look good though, It didn't need changing.

I can't help seeing this as a toe in the ocean fix though. LotRO is such a simple single-player game these days, it's really sad. It's fallen a long way from where it was.

My boyfriend couldn't stand the combat mechanics on Lord of the Rings Online, but the game is also so outdated archaic that he wouldn't even try it with a different combat mechanic now anyway.

There really just isn't an easy way to fix the game. I love the game, but it is really sad I agree.
