Does Trials of Ascension Look Good?

Has anyone heard of Trials of Ascension? It's an MMORPG, and I think it looks pretty good. It just barely got on Kickstarter though, so it won't be out for a long time (if it even reaches it's $750,000 goal). image

I remember this game from way back when and it got cancelled due to lack of investors. Now it's back in development for the last year or two with the devs just using their own money and now a kickstarter.

As far as I know, this is the only MMORPG with heavy survival factors planned like food/water/temperature/hunting/construction/etc. The graphics look dated to me but I don't really give a damn about that. The gameplay they are working on sounds fantastic. It's also permadeath, but only after you die 100 times, which I guess would be sort of necessary for an MMO to gain any significant progress in before permanently dying.

Growing up, my friends have ALWAYS been about game graphics but to me it was always about how fun the game actually is because when you think about it, how could you really enjoy a game when its core values and features are all based on how something looks?

Sure ToA doesn't have the best graphics but if the game itself can make you feel a real sense of loss, sadness, excitement, fear, community, family, love and courage then how could we put any level of emphasis on graphics?

I agree. They're an indie company, so they aren't going to have the hardcore graphics of a game of a huge company! But they're still pretty good considering that! It's all about the gameplay and the fun. Look at Minecraft, for example.

I think the graphics are okay, but even if they weren't (It's still alpha as far as I know) The game mechanics and ideas still makes up for it.

I think the game looks pretty good overall.  You can't expect first rate graphics from an indie company working on a limited budget.  Since they are running a Kickstarter project to raise their capital that should speak volumes. I hope they do well because I would really like to play this game, it sounds really promising and for once we will have an MMORPG that doesn't cater to carebears.

To those worried about the graphics in the few videos we've seen so far I'd just like to say that that is only a prototype build. Something to show off they can do what they're setting out to do. The graphics will be updated down the line during development I'm sure. Just go check out other games on the hero engine.

When viewing these types of games, I only have three points.

    1. There is very little information, the games not even in alpha yet. Investing myself into a game which doesn't even have a foot in the door, isn't going to happen.

    2. I have no faith in Indie developers to make a functioning Mmo, much less a decent sandbox. How many Indie developers have launched Sandboxes in the last few years? Most are still around but have never taken off, the developers skill/experience or lack thereof always shows.

    3. Kickstarter -- I won't support crowdfunding, I think its a flawed conduit for development funds which is taking advantage of the gullibility and desires of gamers. Everyone's looking for free funding now-a-days , in the next few years I suspect the "kickstarter" style of development funding will be exposed for what it is.

I think it's a good thing someone finally is trying to break the treadmill/grind deathgrip today's MMO companies have on the industry. Permadeath doesn't scare me. I used to play AD&D for years, and it runs using a similar permadeath ideal, which is generally, one life per character unless you're very lucky and find something that restores life. Who's to say Forged Chaos won't have the same? They're giving players 100 lives, which will help alleviate deaths via unforeseen circumstances.
