What are the next 3 upcoming MMORPGS?

KuinnKuinn Member UncommonPosts: 2,072

A.) Based on release dates, or realistic expectations, which 3 triple-A mmorpgs are going to release next? Since the release dates usually has very little to do with the actual release windows, does anyone have any could-be-accurate-estimates?

I'm slowly but steadily missing the genre more and more, would be nice to try something new again. I'm not too much interested in anything that is already out, except for Age of Wushu (Wulin?) maybe, but since it's not available in EU we can forget about that.

B.) As a side question, does TERA still have that same standard quest grind leveling or perhaps there are some new and interesting variety added for things to do in order to gain XP? Is the F2P implemented well there?

  • WaidenWaiden Member UncommonPosts: 500

Sad thing is .. we have to wait another 4-6+ months before any new big mmorpg releases :(

I would not care if FF XIV was as good as I expected, but sadly .. instancing of every zone and towns made me quit. Why should I play mmorpg that is dumped down to support consoles. No thank you

No both starbound and eqn landmark are this year.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll bet my money on Wildstar for now. It does not look too bad, just a bit worried the "been there done that" feeling will be higher than I'd like. Not counting out the possibility of positive surprises though, who knows.

That starbound does not really look like a triple A title to me, unless I checked some totally different game. EQ Landmark is somekind of "building game" only? One that uses the EQN engine, or am I completely off here?

They said it would behave as an MMO as well as being a building game. There aren't different classes and you don't have a full slate of skill etc. But there will be combat and trading and building. I don't personally really count it as a full fledged MMORPG but they haven't given enough details yet in general.

I think eq landmark will be as much an mmo as Second Life is, whatever your opinion of that may be. In my opinion it's not a qualifier when people ask "what are the next 3 mmorpgs", but I will still be checking it out.

First half of 2014 should see Elder Scrolls online, Wildstar, Star Citizen, and north american releases of Archeage and Black Desert, any of which I think would be good investments depending on your taste.

Isn't Starbound just like Terraria? Has more in common with Minecraft than an MMORPG.

Wildstar and ESO come to mind as AAA and fairly close to release.

Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security.  I don't Forum PVP.  If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident.  When I don't understand, I ask.  Such is not intended as criticism.

Starbound plays a bit like terraria yeah.
But it has a simmilar multiplayer setup to elite and star citizen, in that you can play it 1 solo
2 on private servers with your friends
3 on hosted servers as a mmo

Oh, that actually sounds kinda interesting. I was under the impression that you just build stuff there and that's it.

Really? I thought we wont be seeing Star Citizen for quite some time yet. I still do actually, there has been only some alpha hangar walk-around demo for the backers and even that performed very poorly. I'd say 2015 launch if even that, sadly, but best they just make it ready and not launch a steaming pile of shit.

You can still grind quests while leveling in Tera.

With the readily available xp boosts it is faster to grind mobs.

From level 30+ you can level in an equalized BG (everyone level 30-60 are 'boosted' to 60 and equipped with equalized gear).

Tera's f2p setup wouldn't really be p2w if that's what you are referring to. You can't flat out buy quality items but it does offer convenience items as well and you can make attaining in-game items faster, might be the best way to put it at least.

    :O

Thanks! I had no idea. I have to take a better look at what's going on when I get home from work, I thought there weren't anything bigger going on EU side yet.

Are you sure about that?  I've never heard of a Korean game transitioning that fast to NA/EU market before.  That would be about 2-3 years faster than it normally seems to take them...

Appears to be WildStar, Elder Scrolls Online and Everquest Next.

From what I've seen the hype level of the three being: WildStar > ESO >>> EQN.

Most people I've spoken to don't even know what EQN is, and the others are SORT of split between ESO and WildStar.

The main argument that pro-ESO-ers constantly bring up to me is that "WildStar looks like a stupid cartoon, ESO looks real", to which I promptly slap them hard across the face.

As for myself I'm profoundly looking forward to WildStar. It just seems to be doing everything right. I have a feeling ESO will go the same road as TOR, Wildhammer, etc., and EQN would be cool if I had a rig to actually run it at more than 2 frames per second.

My money's on WildStar to go the distance, especially now that WoW has been slipping more and more (especially the PvP community which is collapsing in on itself due to extreme amounts of apathy shown by the devs).

A friend of mine who's played WoW as long as I have (7+ years-ish) watched a WildStar devspeak video and almost had a heart attack when at the conclusion of the video the narrator said "...and as always, the devs are listening".

To which he said "You don't see Blizz doing THAT much..."

I think what you say is a safe bet considering past experiences with korean games in the recent past. Maybe you're right. It's probably my wishful thinking that sees it with sony as NA publisher, cross platformed with ps4, korean and english versions simultaneously mid 2014.

That will be too bad for the title, though, if it's 2015. It won't compete at all. It will be like vanguard with its eq1.5 style technology compared to eq2 and wow in 2005, hopefully without the release drama, but still not in league with eqn and titan.

The art style definately does not bother me, I do like more "realistic" looking graphics sure, but I like just as much "cartoony" graphics. Also, when it's going to be a game with a lot of crazy humour and all kinds of madness, the chosen art style is just fine. ESO will be more serious themed game and has more ...serious graphics? Heh :)

I hope both games are successful, we need more mmorpgs that do so well there wont be a crazy amount of layoffs few months after the launch and content patching carries on strong.

    1. Star citizen

    2. DayZ

    3. Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade

These are basically the only ones i have a hint of interest in tbh. I know some of them are a ways off but I can;t see anything in the next 6 months apart from the new Elite:dangerous game piquing my fancy.

  • goldtoofgoldtoof Member Posts: 337
I think the main problem with Wildstar is, everything they say about it sounds just like wow. In which case why not just play wow with its 9 years worth of content behind it.

I understood the combat is a bit different though, more action oriented. Also the paths look nice for a change when you dont feel like grinding quests or farming. Sure they are kinda the same but then again not, if you have a separate progression system for the paths and rewards. Also housing.

I think it has enough different stuff when comparing to WoW, and most of all, if it runs smooth and all the basics are done well, it has brand new world to explore and brand new races to play as. Not to mention it mixes fantasy and sci-fi, I'm more fan of sci-fi than WoW style high-fantasy (that's good too though) so there's that.

If they pull it off and release a complete game I doubt there's reason to call it a WoW clone unless you're one of the countless trolls doing so.

I cant wait for Star Citizen and Eternal Crusade, they just are ways off so I'm not paying much attention to them until they get closer to release.
