The games are free to play but if you want you can "pre-order" and donate to the game with perks. I don't understand why everyone is so flustered. You can still be the freeloader that you planned on being.
What I always dislike about these preorders is that you don't know the value of what you are getting until it's game day. But really, it's more like donating than buying.
You know, they almost had me suckered in again. I was actually planning to try this game when it released. But SOE scamming people for money this freaking early just snapped me back to reality. The game will be nothing more than SOE seeing how much money they can con out of people with tricks and gimmicks before they quit in disgust.
I don't care if I can download it for free and log in without paying anything. I no longer have any intentions of even trying it. SOE can go straight to Hell.
Build a fun game and charge a reasonable price for it with no tricks or scams and I'll be interested. Tell me your game is free and then hit me with fees every time I try to do anything and, as I said before, you can go straight to Hell.

Wow, that's a lot of negative rage over something so insignificant. I bought a $60 after testing was almost over and open beta started. I got my money out of that pack and still have some goodies saved for when they release a new class. I don't think Cryptic runs the best testing I've done it was a pretty fun experience.
SoE actually runs a pretty nice test system with surveys and ways to provide feedback. They're one of my favorite pubs to test for. Dragon's Prophet wasn't a great test, but that had more to do with Runewaker I think than SoE. I still learned a lot out of that test.
I don't really get all the nerd rage in these threads. If it seems foolish to you then skip it. For some of us testing is part of the hobby. I love to do it.
You see they are praying on your passion for testing and other MMO'ers for the need for the new MMO for whatever reason. I think it is pure greed and it does seem like the MMO world has turned on it's head. We aren't having a go at you ( the testers ) but the fact these companies think they can charge us for testing their game. Hopefully this isn't the new trend at this type of pricing , OMG .

Yes, I'm still not following you. So the alpha will start before the end of winter. It says that on their site too. The one in OP https://www.eqnlandmark.com/founders-pack
Are you talking about George or Smed saying something about playing before the end of the year? Or did you read something else that made you jump out with bullshit?
Winter ends on March 19th. Just FYI.
Smedley said it would be available by the end of the year.

They're preying on gamers? I really hate the victim card.
They're not preying on me at all. For one I'm a big boy and can make my own decisions about where I spend my time and money. It's my choice. Secondly, I'm not buying into this one. Maybe later, maybe not at all. But if I do I know full well what I'm getting myself into.
Some games I pay for access to test because I want to test it and I know I'll be playing later and the perks appeal to me. Some games I don't pay to test at all. Usually I don't pay to test, but if the testing goes well and I'm enjoying myself I'll spend some money on a purchase pack or fund the devs in some way.
If you're not a tester what do you care how they spend their money? I tell non-gamers the same thing when they criticize my hobby. If you are a tester and just want in for free, well then go help test games that don't require an entry fee. Project Gorgon could use some more testers in my opinion. This game doesn't require you to purchase anything to register for the test. I'm registered and haven't paid anything at all.
This sort of thing has been around quite a while. I actually hope there will be more up front gating on the tests because it will keep the looky-loos out until the game opens to the general public.
Some people aren't big boys though , maybe a kid wants in and asked said parent what for $100 ? or even $20 , he or she might be a looky-loo. Best way to do this would be to fill in a form to enter of some sort or something easier to keep such idiots out , not charge you to get in. No one should have to pay to test something. Have a testing description , detailing that you have to make a report every so often etc.
In this case by all means Sony could of charged for some pre-order weird hybrid F2P perks for the actual game but not this way ever.
Testing was indeed my thing a long time ago. Mostly boring stuff though.

You don't understand it because it makes no sense~. There is no reason to complain about this game based on them allowing donations to get into beta. If you don't want to donate money towards the game just wait for it to be released and play it then. I don't think I'm going to get landmark early but I might do EQNext if they offer the same type of thing. I'll probably donate for Star Citizen as well as that is the only other game I'm really pumped up for. I spent $20 to beta test PoE too and it was worth my cash and I gladly supported them.
This is the new business model that is going to be very common now, it isn't just some SOE thing. This and kickstarter is just how things work, people need to just get over it.
I can't login on Station.com or I would have purchased one of the $60 or $100 Founder's packs. What can I do? Funny thing is I can login just find on the launchpad.
Is it just me but doesn't it feel wrong for companies to sell you the right to test their game. I find this totally abusrd paying to play an alpha build of a game just sounds horrible. Basically your paying them for an unfinished product to help cover the cost of game they want you to spend more money on later.
We are paying for the chance to build our own MMOs, not theirs. How will someone build EverQuest Next if they choose to build spaceships in Landmark?
If you are incapable of realizing what Voxel modeling tools + scripting tools + AI + Free To Play mean for an MMO indie developer, or for people who want their own worlds, you are flat on retarded. Let me say this again so it registers, you are Retarded.
If you don't want to pay than DON'T PAY bichez! No one is dying for your lunch money!
Regular people should NEVER have access to alpha level code... And if it is in good enough shape to let regular people use it... It is NOT alpha level code... It would then be some form of BETA.
Beyond that it is pretty good for a pre-order programme.
Exactly! And I think that the idea of "Alpha" and "Beta" have changed over the last few years since they started allowing for paid beta access. As F2P they are trying to acquire and maintain customers and anyone trying to do that would never dump someone into an alpha build of software, or at least not an ACTUAL Alpha build. At this point, Open Beta is essentially release because they generally don't do a DB wipe on launch, so just shift everything backwards from there, so Alpha is more like Closed Beta, really, lol.
$100 is a bit steep for early access with 4 beta invites. Of course I have never been the "Cool Title" type.
I will just wait for Beta.
I really don't understand how it is possible that people are still crying about the F2P thing. If you really want to know how SOE is doing F2P check out Planetside 2. They are doing it right.
The things that are offered in the cash shop that effect your game play are all available through experience. Period. The other stuff is strictly cosmetic. And that is all there is to it.
I think their system is the best F2P I have seen. There is definitely no Pay to win in PS2.
The way SOE did the PS2 launch was perfect in my opinion too. I was in on Late Alpha and have been playing since June of last year. From day 1 the game ran great. Not everything was available at the time and things changed quite a bit but it is fun every single day since I started.
If they run Landmark and EQN as good as they did PS2, I will be very happy.
And I will see you guys on Norath. Including the cry babies

you bring up a good point
I wonder if SOE is going to do a wipe of the alpha/closed beta player creations

One of the Trailblazer perk is a 48(+) hours headstart to grab a claim and start building once the game hit Open Beta. So Alpha and Closed Beta creations will get wiped...probably more than once in the case of Alpha too.
A founder's pack is essentially a "you have been scammed" package. Anyone who is naive enough to purchase one, the rest of us are rather puzzled how you can be so easily taken in by bad marketing?.

No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin
Two seperate things..and I doubt the Landmark founders pack does anything for EQN ( not that he asked..just heading off a future question )
No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin
What you are paying for with $100 or whatever is to get in on the community of builders when the community is small and exciting.
That is all.
It has nothing to do with the perks of virtual goods. It has to do with the Bartle Test of explorer and achiever and community.
If you don't groove on it and you like to go kill things, this ain't your game, go kill orcs (or be one...or both).
You pay your money (if you got it) you takes your chances. If you aren't a SWG vet, or if you got over the PTSD.
And if you don't choose to you don't.
Risks are part of gaming.
Last I checked.
