Omeed Dariani and Darrin McPherson take part in the latest EverQuest Next roundtable video. In this latest installment, the pair discuss in-game holidays, where they fit in, why they happen, what they mean and much more. Check it out and leave us your thoughts on in-game holidays in the comments.

I haven't watched the video yet, but wouldn't a sandbox game allow players to create their own holidays and celebrations?

How do you figure that a sandbox would let players generate events that spanned the entire game...? I'm sure they could create some small community events but not an event that affected the entire in-game world.

I see nothing wrong with holidays, it adds flavour to the game. Everquest has always had in game holidays.

I'd prefer if Developers focused less on Holiday events, than on actual events ala EQ1. Scripted Holiday events filled with lackluster mini-games and pointless decorations are meaningless  opposed to furthering world lore, seeing lore played out, getting the community involved in events, and showing that a developer team is actively trying to keep it's costumers engaged. If they can do both, great ... but it seems alot of titles have used these Holiday events as content fill ins lately.

    Yes to in Game Holidays.

Yes to them matching time periods that coincide with RL.

Yes to also making lore based holidays that can also be unique as well.

    No Holidays = Fail MMO.

If you don't want holidays in game = Scrooge

In fact if you don't like holidays you should have your computer stripped from your possession and your consoles given away to kids less fortunate because they would probably bring joy to the world instead of stagnation and self entitlement.

Scrooge checking in here... I can't stand "holiday" nonsense in MMO of any kind, I always felt those efforts would be better used elsewhere.

On the other hand... If EQN is in fact going to be a sandbox it really should be up to the player community to promote such themes... All they could do would be to provide seasons...  ie Snow in the winter etc....

    What are your other Hobbies?

Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

I have no problem with scripted seasonal holidays but I would definitely like to see random GM events pop up like they used to way back in the early days of EQ1 as well. Rallying Calls will be great but not quite the same.

    ^^^this

It is amusing seeing all the "immersion" freaks rationalize real world hoildays in mmo's while condemning everything else THEY dont feel is appropriate.

Everquest Next should stop doing vids, just stop building this expectation already. I got one for you though ready? Everquest Next: Swtor overhyping yea or nay?

i'd rather see general seasonal festivals. holidays just cuts too close to xmas et.al., for me.

I rather have seasonal weather than holidays. Winter/spring/summer/fall or dry and rainy seasons for desert and tropical areas. Just put in decorations and let the players decorate since its a sandbox.
  • I'm not a huge fan of holiday events either. For me they tend to break the immersion a little bit to see all the in game areas decorated with xmas lights or easter eggs, or even worse when I see players wearing santa costumes into battle rather then armor.

I can understand the fun and appeal of in game events, but I feel it'd be better if the game invented events that went with the game lore rather then relying on RL events. Anyone remember Wookie day from SWG for example, although I know the day has origins from outside the game, it was still crafted to go well with the star wars lore.

On another note, as an adult gamer holidays are the time I am least likely to be playing MMOs/Games. I have food to cook, friends and family to visit, and often overtime to work at the job for the holiday rush. Because of that I usually end up missing out on whatever holiday content was offered.

So far on the nay that it makes the question seem ridiculous? I mean seriously a 2 minute video about how holidays might be handled is not hype, a video about how fast you can travel is not hype. These are really mundane game concepts being discussed and certainly not anything meant to hype a game.

i'm perfectly happy with in-game holiday events especially when they coincide with holidays of the outside world

    why?

because i'll be playing more on those holidays.

am much into "holiday events", even if Ive gotten rather tired of most of the EQ2 events, since usually they are alot more fun than the, day to day game...due to repeating the main part of the game throughout a year, but also get to be a less serious part of the game.

anyway used to love EQ2 holiday events.

LOTR have places about where events are held by players all the time, such as stages for music events.

As far as in-game holiday events I'm all for them as long as it's not something slapped together quickly, like jumping puzzles and simple mob killing events.

I have to say World of Warcraft do a great job with holiday events.
