The EverQuest Next: Landmark team has put together a terrific new video showing how in-game items are taken from concept to "reality" within the game. Check out the video to see design in action.
I've got ideas in my head about what things look like that I want to build. Up until this point I wasn't convinced about the flexibility of the system but now I'm convinced.
What interesting is that this Concept art is from Everquest Next. Not from EQN: Landmark. Basically artist made a location that will look like in the main fantasy-based sandbox themepark MMO game.
It looks very good. Imagine this place with Water, NPC's and players. You would die for this game.
Kind of an odd choice for a structural shape considering all the hubbub about Minecraft penises. Ha.
Seriously though, this is the kind of stuff I want to see. Very awesome. I wonder how much work obtaining the proper tools and materials will be to erect something like this. (Sorry couldn't help it.)
Originally posted by Ivylena EQN and EQL are two seperate games. Nice nonetheless.
Correct. I think he was alluding to the fact that they share the same engine and similar art assets... especially considering that here Landmark is being used to recreate EQN concept art. It will be interesting to see how Landmark affects EQN development. Such a good opportunity for a polished release since Landmark will have provided the grandest beta test (i mean that in a good way) for EQN.
How is this going to help the game though? Yes there might be creative people making awesome things in game, but how much will really be useful for the developers? We will need more tools, like npcs, mobs, loot making, and ability to make quests, place traps ect. Perhaps then some content would be useful for EQN. We need more tools if the developers want use to have a hand in the creation. Also they better allow things like terraforming, planting vegetation(growing it with proper things like water, sunlight, and compost) constructing houses, guild fort, cities, and custom made dungeons with gathered material. Also it all should be destructable as well. Otherwise Landmark will just be a gimmick.
I'd like to make a giant maze for people to go through when Landmark launches.
For what I've read there will be some sort of connection between EQL and EQN, in the sense that some of the content players come up with, might make it to EQN word... Not sure about that though..
IMO - less than 0.01% of EQL beta testers will be capable of doing anything at that level of quality.
But world designers (who do this sort of thing for a living - like the person who did that video) will.
The issue is - most folks are not that creative, and there's no building tool in the world that can fix that.
I like how they stayed zoomed out the entire time (to not show the low-res textures) heh.
This sounds to me like a challenge to ALL good people with a creative bent. We shall see. Maybe we even need to revisit this challenge again say this time next year?

Do we know for certain one way or the other whether these tools will or won't be available. Seems to me I have the understanding that we will have just about everything the devs have...
just my question here really...

I am fine with that. It will let those with the talent to create engaging content stand out more and perhaps create an actual player-generated "feel" to the world rather than it just being a giant mess. Will depend upon how content interacts with others/other content, I suppose.
I love the social experiment that games like this make possible. It's interesting to see how these things play out when not knowing what the content will be beforehand. In a way, that sense of wonder is what made me start playing mmos in the first place.
The idea is that EQL creations can be upvoted? in someway and once reviewed and approved will be available in EQN...so that...in EQL you make a two bedroom house...it's makes it into the EQN marketplace as an available asset to purchase. EQN is F2P of course. Now from there...let's say you made that 2br house and it is the bomb and everyone wants it...they buy the plans from the market and you get a portion of that in money, a comission so to speak.
This is the part that has me interested, I mean imagine you go to buy a guild hall or house or find a sword or piece of armor and you can buy a standard house or have 3, 10, 1000 different houses/halls/swords to choose from.

there will be various contests where players are invited to create structures that might possibly be included in EQ Next. Maybe the devs will ask for a specific tower for Qeynos, or a thatch-roofed hut. The community will be allowed to vote items up or down, but devs have the final say on any selection for the game.
