I agree. I am reserving my final comment about this until Dark and Light comes out, if that ever happens, because SoG is an unfinished prelude that basically is a version of beta. Not fair to make final judgements on it, but from what I have seen of, it is so underwhelming after 4+ years of work on it.
Biggest let down MMORPG of all time for me is D&D Online and it's not even out yet. I've been in since alpha and the game is so dissappointing.
From the standpoint of BEING D&D its a letdown, it's barely D&D and mostly just the name.
From the standpoint of a good MMORPG it's a letdown. Tedious, boring, repetitive and not the least bit innovative.
It's not D&D and it's not a good mmorpg and from what I've seen it's not going to change from what it is now to what will be released soon. I keep hoping!

I have to agree with you. I read all about it, stayed on-top of things at the forums and I was active in the community, yet when they released the SoG "beta" it felt like an two year old alpha-version, one that should now have been released to 18881 players... It simply gave the whole community a big smack right on the nose, and it caused the Devs to get a bad rep.
At least that is how I feel about it. I'm still interested in DnL though, and I am confident that they will produce and amazing product when the final release is coming up. Just don't know it will truly be in april 2006 or if'll take another two years
Horizons for me. Game just failed to delivery what it promised in it's homepage and official FAQs. (And this wasn't beta or pre-release order, it was after game was gone gold and released.)

I would have to say that EQ was very cool until Lucin and everything after it, I really miss selling goodie bags in the EC (East Commonland) Tunnel, ever until that bloody bazaar I really lost the fun, of going on adventures and getting loot and selling it there. And with Lucin I couldnt get my mom's druid on and sell ports to various places.. I really loved the concept of working for the gold by doing Goodie bags, and Selling ports... Ahh those were the day's I really miss them and I try to put other mmorpgs in that old EQ concept... Ahh almost every mmorpg really doesnt satify me the way EQ did (my first MMORPG to add)...

Totally agree, One of the only games I have ever really looking foward to and then delay delay delay , me hoping delays would make sure it was fantastic for beta/gold then the sheer dissapoitment when it got cancelled, although it wasnt a let down as in bad game when was supposed to be good,it was a let down because they cancelled it and it would have been amazing.
It should not have been such a big failure, but due to SOE, the game had been a complete downer.
It had so much potential and it is a shame that it was all flushed down the drain.
I along with several of my friends left the game after the holocron grind. The fact that there were so many jedi running around during a time period where jedi were almost extinct kinda put a damper on the time period the game was suppose to be set in.
If they were going to have jedi as a playable class, they should have released the game set in the Knights of the Old Republic time era. That way, players would not get displeased having thousands of jedi running around and it would fit the time line.
Oh well.

I agree 101%. The whole idea of having a Jedi char intrigued me alot but when I noticed that alot of Jedi were popping out I kinda got into thought about timeline issues.
Horizons - David Allens version of it would have been much better.
DnL SOG - DNL is going to flop when it hits april, and I mean flop hard. Like a 600 pound man doing a belly flop into a body of water 600 feet below a waterfall.
Eve Online - I remember reading the Lore for this game. Before I got into the beta of it. Was disappointed then and even now with the game.
Matrix Online - This game should have never been made if they were going to make it this craptastic.
Shadowbane - A long wait for such a horrible game. Great classes, plenty of potential. Just not that great.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
Originally posted by Darktongue BTW the grind in WoW is laughable tbh.If you have a problem lvling in WoW and find the grind bad then perhaps mmos arent for you lol. You can lvl without any grind at all and doing JUST quests. My wife did that 1-60.
Doing just quests? Don't you mean errands?
You really lack perception don't you? You think because they stamp "Quest" on it, and send you off to collect 10 thick leather hides, it means no more grind?
I played that game to 55, and quite a few classes to 30. It was grinding all the way. And mind you, the only time I killed creatures that were not on a quest, was to get hides for my leathercrafter. So leveling for the most part, was "Go kill 10 ogre's, and I'll give you 1 gold, 30 silver, and maybe some perty boots. Oh...and mind you. There is 20 other generic "quests" like this, but it's really something that we'll pretend is not a grind."
Give me a break. Only a twit could not see that it was just another facade to hide the intense, and boring grind that was in WoW. That game was an immense dissapointment. Even the PvP sucked hardcore.
Now onto the subject at hand. WoW wasn't the biggest dissapointment for me, because I never expected much of it.
That honor would go to Horizons, with Asherons Call 2 as close second. I was a follower of Horizons for about a year pre blackout; that game promised to be every MMORPG'ers wet dream. Everything about it was just...Beautiful!
And asherons call 2 because I was a huge fan of AC1, and played it from beta to about 2 1/2 years into release.
"Fear not death; for the sooner we die, the longer shall we be immortal."
WoW for me, no doubt it will win MMORPG player award of 2005.
Never played SWG and by looks of things, glad I didn't. There are too many fantasy mmorpgs out there, only so many times you can grind by killing a sewer rat, maggot, centipede with a rusty dagger. Horizons was a huge letdown. politics killed it off for me.
I think I am done with mmorpgs and there seems to be a new trend of if you can't beat IGE, join them. Just look at Project Entropia or Roma Victor to see what I mean. mmorpgs just attract afk macroers and all the bad style of gaming as people try to get a competitive edge over something that only exists in the players imagination.
2006 doesn't look any better, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if a few has beens get cancelled. Only mmorpgs that have no monthly fees are crap and the ones that do are not much better so I may as well stick to single player games. I probably spent about £300 on mmorpgs this year, subscriptions and boxed versions + expansions soon adds up and that's not counting broadband connection, I could buy a dozen bargain games that I didnt get to play or heck a new console or TV.
I'd have to say SWG, just because it became a big let down. Which is a great shame because there aren't exactly a vast number of decent SciFi MMORPGs about and, well, it was Star Wars. Someone might make another SciFi MMORPG that's worth playing at some point, but it won't be Star Wars.
Ahh well, it's only a game. Well, it's only a crap game now, but you know what I mean.
Biggest letdown = Horizons. They promised so much, many different/dark races, dragons would be hunted for crafting components, pvp, etc. They had none of it.
Second biggest letdown = Shadowbane. It sounded good, but was crap.
Also, for those who tried playing EQ2 and quit a long time ago, I played on the 'free days' they sent out in the middle of december and got hooked on it. You might want to give it a try again if you are bored with your current game.
I am not trying to start this DnL fest, but Dark and Light seems like it will end up like Horizons, Thats just what I feel... Im just waiting for PoTBS, (sorry to get off topic.)
SWG was the best online game I ever played till they came out with that crap they called the "combat upgrade". 2 weeks after the cu hit i cancelled all of my accounts and sold my jedi on ebay for $700. Now that the NGE hit, the game has gone from really bad to total junk. There is hardly any player base left and if i was a betting man I would say the game will go under sometime in late 06 or early 07 unless something is done soon. Jedi can barely be sold now for over $150. I should play the stock market.

SWG by far.
Second most biggest deception is AC2. The game was everything but what AC1 players wanted it to be.
And Finally the next biggest deception will be Dark And Light.
yeah,,but i dont think dark and light will be that big of a letdown,,,compared to some of the other games.

The fact that a game cam be a letdown means that it had to have had a lot of hype at the beginning, but then it was executed very poorly.
This just goes to prove my theory that the MMORPG market doesn't need more fresh ideas, it just needs to start making the current ones work better.

Fanboys are the reasons why games become "letdowns".
They are the ones that spread false information about the game by their blind fanboism.
