The general recommendation when faced with an unknown dungeon can be summed up as 'left towards death'. I generally pick the right fork just to be contrary.
Most dungeons seem to be made with expectations that people will go follow the left wall. Going to the right often blocks you from getting to the end by putting gaps or jumps that can't be passed when going in that direction but are easily passed going the opposite way.
When you are lost in a maze it is recommended you pick either wall and follow it to the end.
Also most people are right handed and right eyed. Castle defenses such as stairwells were made to benefit the defenders. One mostly left handed Scottish clan built their castle stairwells to spiral in the 'wrong' direction for their benefit.

There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville
I remember wondering why everyone always went left when they came into the space port in swg. You could set up ambushes in there and only cover the left side because no one ever went right.
I read a few theories on why we do it. Most of them went on about how we process things in the 2 hemispheres of our brain but nothing ever really explained why everyone did it. I could see something like artisitcs go left and mathematics go right but it isn't like that.
anyway... I go left unless I'm paying attention and the maps looks like it would be right.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
Psychologically speaking, Left Handers will typically pick or go "Left" (in a given situation) while Right Handers will typically pick or go "Right" (again, in a given situation where choice is offered).
Likewise, someone whom is more Left Brain oriented will often make their choice based on "Logic", while someone whom is more Right Brain oriented will make their choice based on "Intuition".
Now...figure out who/what you are! Hehe. Interesting survey.

This will never happen because the Internet has removed any mystery from any game. Even before the game is released everyone knows the direction to take.
When I played D&D, the dungeons were sprawling and if we were not consistent, we could get lost. So, we went left to right in our choices just to set a habit. I still stick with that today

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

A POST TITLED LEFT OR RIGHT IS SUPPOSED TO CONTAIN TWO PICTURES, SIDE BY SIDE, OF PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE REAL LIFE, COOTIE INFESTED FEMALES, FOR OILY KEYBOARD WARRIORS TO POST REPLIES SUCH AS,RIGHT BECAUSE I LIEK ASIANS

Will this do?

I grew up playing games like Daggerfall TeS and in that game the left right conundrum was right near meaningless. The dungons were looping 3d enormous puzzle like layberniths where most times following a wall only lead you around a small section of the map. The map was nearly no help either as with the vertical loops that sometimes lead a player into a down slide that woldnt allow one to retrace their steps....
Yea, totaly lost!
That said I tend towards a form of intuition nowadays. Its not habit or even perfect but I get a gut feeling and go with it!

You're an odd man.
I usually flip a coin if ones nearby, if not, always go left. I've had bad experiences going right>.>
Yes I have a dream And its not some MLK dream for equality. I wanna own a decommissioned lighthouse And I wanna live at the top And nobody knows I live there. And theres a button that I can press, and launch that lighthouse into space.
I remember wondering why everyone always went left when they came into the space port in swg.
They always went left in to the spaceport because the shuttle was on the left side. Why go right and take the long way? I hope you didn't hurt your self wondering about this.
I've often thought about this, but it seems I always make the decision at the first fork with intuition (or random chance). After the first turn however, I keep to my choice for the rest of the "maze".

I look at the map to decide.

Send a scouting party ahead, wait to hear who screams first.
Go other direction...

Left. Out of habit.
