Voted sub but the real answer is depends. If the game is subpar or average then it should be F2P without a doubt. If it's exceptional then sub all the way. In other words, every current game should be F2P.
There are no pure subscription models anymore. At best you get sub + cash shop, such as WoW.
For me, I prefer B2P+Cash Shop such as GW2. The devs get enough money up front so that they don't have to cripple your gaming experience from the get-go.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
Until MMOs can be developed for free they come with a cost that must be paid. I'd rather pay a set price and not feel the RL pull.
What do you mean by "RL pull"?
Personally, nothing makes me feel a "pull" more than a subscription. I feel that if I don't play as much as possible, I'll be wasting money, and that feeling is not a good one. Also, trying a sub game after a pause often requires paying one month sub, even if you only try it for an hour and see that nothing's really changed.
Games with Sub's tend to have all the charges up front and visible, and so called 'Free' games usually end up being of the nickle and dime variety, and who needs constant pestering for cash while your playing, not me.
Now that I think about it further, I would love a subscription model.
One that is paid by the hour, not by the month.
Maybe I need to move to China.
Lol truue I'd do that as well.

Give me a game worth the sub, and I'll gladly pay it.
Give me a game I don't think that's worth it, and I'll do F2P, more than likely for a pretty a short time, and odds are you're going to get very little money from me. Boxes of chance don't appeal to me in the least, the other stuff you find in in shops, even less
Id much rather a developer make a game I consider worth the sub, but it's been a long wait.
Originally posted by Vutar What are these free games you speak of? I have seen cash shops or micro transaction games where you end up paying more each month than a sub in order to have the same functionality that a sub game would. I certainly have not seen a free MMORPG, unless of course you want to play partial games without the features a sub game offers.
wotmud :-P
Full free to play, no cash shop, nothing to pay. Real F2P
As for "want to play partial games". The day a company is able to have half the features wotmud has in it's graphical bullcrap game I ,may be, will have a look at it, may be. Who knows.
Nah.
It's always about what you like and expect. All models are fine as long as it fits your gaming needs. F2P, B2P or sub based.
I've personally tried 'free' games. I've just never found one that I played more than a few sessions. They all ended up feeling like the same grinder/japanime type of game.
I see cash shops for xp boosts, armor, mounts, bank slots, health potions, etc.,...
No thanks.
I end up deleting the game and wishing that I could remove all information from that companies databases regarding my personal identity.
I voted free but really there should be different options as well. My preferred method is a game I can play any time I want w/o a sub but pay a sub when I want to take it serious. This isn't an MMO but APB is a game that I play for free unless I feel like really leveling my characters up, which at the moment I am. So for now I am paying a sub for the game and earning more experience and money.
In a traditional style MMO this type of thing could work just fine, at least the leveling part. Lets face it, even sandbox games have levels. You must do something for a certain amount of time/effort before you can do anything else. Set the base amount. What it takes for a standard subscription player to "level up". Then you can reduce those rewards for the free to play players, 50% longer perhaps? 80%?
Purchase a game for ~$50-$60 and then play it. If you really like it and want to be able to level up faster, subscribe. When it comes to cash shops, there's nothing wrong with vanity items. Have all the items that anyone can use in game, but in the cash shop have that same item only with a newer fancier model. It wouldn't change gameplay at all, only allows others to look different if they choose.
Until MMOs can be developed for free they come with a cost that must be paid. I'd rather pay a set price and not feel the RL pull.

If I enjoy playing an MMO then the cost isn't in my face each time I make a purchase if I sub. The only problem I have with systems like GW2, STO, TERA and Aion is that they write the check with those darn lockboxes. Each of the titles I listed does it a little differently but I'd rather all content be available up front and pay a set fee. GW2 irks me specifically since one "thing" about it is that the look of gear matters. The stock ones look pretty plain no matter the level and though you can earn the reagents through questing how long before the stock runs out?
Even if I forget to play the whole month via sub how much is that amount going to get me in any of the games listed above? You get very little for 15.00 as a one time purchase, instead of having a month to earn it through playing. Of course I know what is going to happen regardless of my single opinion, but I prefer 100% sub, no CS.

The lockboxes in GW2 are not worth opening, period. Also there are only a few armor items in the cash shop. Most of them are earned through renown hearts or dungeon rewards, or you can buy them with gold. What is this premium looking armor you need to buy from the cash shop you are talking about? Examples?
And if you forget to play for a whole month the F2P game is going to cost you exactly 0.00. Let's compare apples to apples here, shall we?
And the time for 100% sub, no CS has gone already. You can keep on dreaming, but it's not coming back. Even WoW is adding in-game CS purchases soon.
Oh yeah, the strait sub has gone out the door but the OP was preference In relation to now I prefer a freemium model where you can sub to get most things other than cosmetics or xp pots. That way anyone can play and pay for the experience they want.
Regarding GW2 I wasn't very clear. I mean there was the rare skin lockbox fiasco but I doubt they'll do that again. I was referring to the reagents that change the armor look to that of another piece. If you get a set you really like you could end up getting chipped at money wise because every level of gear of course is better. The choice could be gimp myself or pay for skin swapping reagents.
As far as not playing at all with a sub I was comparing hat you would get from your expense using extremes. If I don't play having a sub I've wasted 15.00 right? That's a baseline for cost. In GW2 for example how much does that get me? A bank and a bag slot unlocked? In a sub game how long would it take me to expand my space like that? Not a whole month. Yes I know in GW2 you can get bigger bags but the largest is what, 20 slots? I don't besmirch ANet for finding ways to make money, they update GW2 like a beast, I just think you get far more via sub than the risk of not playing may bring.
This is just my opinion but the most time you could spend playing a sub to get the same "thing" costing 15.00 in a shop is a week. The way I see it then by comparison you've lost 3.75
Again, realistically I prefer freemium/sub but more money, money needed for updates and polish, comes from CS which I'm fine with. IMO you just get far less for your money if there is no sub option.
Given there is so many fun sub-free games out there, i will never play a sub one again. What is better than a fun game? A fun game that is paid for by whales!
Is a vote on this site an honest sample of the mmo market ?
Absolutely not, be we all pretty know that right?
This is the home of the disenfranchised "bitter vet", and hater, of course it doesn't represent.
I voted sub, because I equate quality game play with sub game's that I've previously enjoyed.
Heck, I'm playing a freeshard right now, not because I'm cheap, or prefer not to pay, but it's the only title that's close to what I'm looking for.
But hey, give me DAOC 2 totally for free with no strings attached and you can sign me up right now.
But let's face it, there is no free lunch, someone has to pay for the game, I prefer it the cost to be shared more or less equally amongst the player base and not heavily skewed towards whales vs non-payers.

See what I did there
I prefer the transparency of the sub model.
So the only replies have been from the people who voted sub, I am sure that means something, lol.

The danger of game design to be centered on getting money from you is great with F2P.
Sub is the way to go for anyone wanting to make a real investment into a game.

if you pay subs how can you play more than one game.
1. How did you come to that conclusion?
2. Two subs?

Plus one ARPG player who like some current MMOs.
I voted Sub because i know what I'm voting for.
I prefer F2P if it has a cosmetic store model, or a store like Path of exile.
But most F2P games are just p2w garbage.
