LF Roguelike...

Sterlin22Sterlin22 Member UncommonPosts: 16

I'm trying to find a Roguelike with the following qualities:

1) Some sort of customization for your character, AT LEAST multiple classes

2) Randomly Generated Dungeons / Levels / Floors

3) Permanent Death

4) Literally Never Ending - Or so long that dying before you get to the end is exceptionally likely

5) Crap loads of replayability

Got any that you recommend?

I think i don't understand your request here, could be i don't remember that terminology , but what is a roguelike??

Roguelike type of game? where you play a rogue?

    or

A game that as gone under the radar and is considered a roguelike type of game? or i could be missing the point completely.

Googling "Definition of roguelike" provides the following definition for the term "The roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing video games, characterized by level randomization and permanent death." Examples of it include Hack, Slash, and Loot, and even Dwarf Fortress. Games like Dungeons of Dredmor, FTL: Faster Than Light, and Spelunky are examples of games that take the genre of roguelike games and alter them to make them more unique.

  • http://dos-ragnarok.wikia.com/wiki/Ragnarok_/_Valhalla_Wiki - old but very tough and complex Roguelike in a Norse mythology setting. Tonnes of fun. You will die.

Dungeons of Dredmor. Awesome set of possible skill combo's for replayability and customisation, a good sense of humor and Steam workshop compatible.

I've heard that Dungeons of Dredmore is a good roguelike. I don't think it has classes, I think it is skill based. You can pick it up on Steam for about $5 I think.

Tales of Maj'Eyal, just bought it on steam and I'm loving it. Like 20 classes and 8 races. Each class is unique, has skill trees, basic ones, but they're still there. 50 levels. Can turn on permadeath if you want. Totally worth $7.

Also stonesoup dungeon crawl, virtually the same game as Maj'Eyal, just a lot more oldschool. Still gives hours of play time though.

And Dredmor is awesome. It's a bit too quick, but has endless replayability.

Yes I have a dream… And its not some MLK dream for equality. …I wanna own a decommissioned lighthouse …And I wanna live at the top… And nobody knows I live there. …And theres a button that I can press, and launch that lighthouse into space.

If you're looking strictly for an RPG, then Dungeons of Dredmor for sure. Fun, humorous (it has a lutefisk god FFS), and a TON of replayability. In fact, I should play it more myself.

Any ARPG with a hardcore mode could technically qualify. I recommend all put Path of Exile, while I love the way PoE is set up for hardcore (if you die, you go to the regular league and can keep playing that character if you like) the desync problem means it's very easy to get killed through no fault of your own. Furthermore GGG either can't or won't fix it (a trustworthy source confirms the former, sadly). Not to say it's unplayable of course, but do so at your own risk.

Of course there's the ASCII / basic sprite crawlers like Nethack, Angband, ADOM, AlienRL, DoomRL (VERY fun) and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (DCSS).

Wizardry Online has permadeath, but I don't know you well enough to hate you, so I won't recommend it.

I'd be willing to bet that Legend of Grimrock has a roguelike mode or mod out there somewhere. If you can get past out-of-place twitch-based combat, it's a very good dungeon crawler with nice graphics. Just be ready to sidestrafe more than a champion Quake 3 player.

If you don't mind a platformer, Rogue Legacy is an interesting twist on roguelikes. When you die, you then play as the descendant of your previous character. Quite fun for a bit, but very easy to get screwed by the dynamic level generation. I've gotten screwed before when about 10 castles in a row had early rooms which were essentially impassable death traps.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Edit: The game mentioned in the post above mine is also available for free on the website http://www.te4.org Going to check it out now.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Second that for FTL and Pixel Piracy!

Rogue-like refers to the 80's ASCII classic dungeon crawler that randomly generates the level with every game and forces you to restart from scratch with each death.

Project Zomboid has a close match, but the world is the same with each new life, your character just dies.

Spelunky is another one - side-scrolling platformer that is pretty spot-on when it comes to Rogue-like games.
