I am curious about the comment on xbox one not yet launching in Japan. Do they expect to sell a lot of units there ? That seems odd considering their penchant for Playstation consoles.
I don't really see a difference between them at this point so early since release.
(for the confused the math equals 1 million units sold per week for each one)
And as always there is not logical reason to be a fanboy of either one. Either you want to play a game or you don't. You buy the console that has the games you want to play.
Stop trying to be all logical and drink the damn hateraide!
As of December 28, the PS4 had been on sale for 43 days and sold 4.2 million units. By December 28, the PS4 was available in 48 territories. If we divide 4.2 million by 43 days, we get a figure of around 98,000 units sold per day
By December 31, the Xbox One was available in 13 territories. 3 million in 39 days equates to around 77,000 units per day
worth noting the PS4 is available in more territories
All I know is that my local Target store had no PS4s last weekend, while they still had launch-day Xbox Ones. The clerks were very vocal about how no one wants the Xboxes.
I am a PC gamer, and don't own either. Just saw this thread on the front page, and thought I would chime in.
ah, well then im sorry. I logged on after a night out at the pub, expecting to get post on what this forum usually has to offer. I've totally missed this direction it has offered and wasn't prepared for it.
Originally posted by FappuccinoHas Sony been able to meet demand?
its not that they cannot meet demand. They delibratly short supply to keep demand high.
How does that help keep them in demand?
If a product doesn't have a next best alternative, then people respond to short supply of something by wanting that something more. They camp out at stores and are willing to pay a higher price for something, even though the shortage is usually a short term thing. You can see this in consoles being sold on eBay for much higher than their sticker price.
It's very different if there's an alternative product that meets the consumers' needs or desires, but with consoles, that's not really the case. Someone who wants a PS4 wants a PS4 and someone who wants an XB1 wants an XB1.
Only hardcore gamers think that way.
To casual gamers and their family the PS4 and the Xbox One are the same and I have seen a mother ask to buy a PS4, get told its sold out, then buy the Xbox One "because all these game systems are the same right?".
If Sony is holding back supply then its definitely NOT to artificially increase demand it would be to prepare for the Japan release.
If the PS4 and the XB1 were interchangeable, then neither Sony nor Microsoft would allow for a shortage in supply. It would be too damaging to their sales. They both know that they can err on the side of lower production to be safe, and they will still sell the same number of units.

Console brand loyalty not only exists, it's quantifiable. Playstation Owners More Loyal Ignoring everything else about the article, what it shows is that the most likely result of something looking at one console or the other is that they have already chosen which one they want. They know what they want, so having the other one available isn't relevant to their purchasing choice.
Next time read your link beforehand.
An online survey of 155 people? Really?! Hilarious.
Also, did you forget that these things need to be manufactured? Its not like they can wave a wand and magically whisk up a million consoles.
Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, that the shortage of supply isnt because of some insidious plot but because they dont have consoles made?
I don't think there's a conspiracy. That's someone else. Someone asked how demand could go up because something was unavailable, and the answer is, it just does. If consumers want a product, and that product is unavailable, and a replacement is either nonexistent or undesired, consumers are willing to spend more money on the product they want. People are just like that.
However, I don't think there's a conspiracy with PS4 consoles being unavailable because there is no benefit to Sony. They aren't going to charge more money for their consoles, and all the people who are going to buy a PS4 already know they are going to buy a PS4. The only thing shorting their production does is limit their possible revenue.
As far as brand loyalty, it exists with consoles just like it exists with any branded product. If it didn't the "Console Wars" wouldn't be wars at all. People would just buy whatever was available. The people who are going to buy a PS4 are not going to purchase an XB1 if the PS4 is not available. If that were the case, then the XB1 would be selling more consoles because the PS4's production is limited.
**
We know brand loyalty in consoles exists because if the consoles were interchangeable, then the PS4 would always sell out first, because it's $100 cheaper. Only after the PS4s were unavailable would the XB1s sell. However, people are still buying XB1s. They're buying a lot of them. They must be buying them because they want the XB1 instead of the PS4, even though it's $100 more expensive.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Do these companies not even evaluate whether they are releasing worse games with newer consoles? Oh hey, hows the future looking, with all this progress... Lower quality. What's the point anymore? If they progressively get worse as time goes on, they're moving backwards.

I'm not even getting in the console wars this generation, I got a Wii-U and it's a blast. I'll just say this, PS4 has better hardware and is $100 cheaper. Xbox is $100 more, inferior hardware, and is forcing you to use Kinect, which in my case has never worked right. I had it on 360, none of the commands worked, you sat there saying a command over and over, finally get fed up and go grab the controller lol.

I have actually been thinking of switching over to xbox. simply because microsoft is a better company in my opinion. There aren't many console specific games that would make me want to stay with sony either. It used to dominate because of the games it offered, now it seems like they are becoming way too disney minded.
If I do ever decide to get a next gen console it probably wont be for a year or so anyway. Gotta wait for the game line up to actually show what the systems are capable of. Just like with the last generation of consoles you really didnt get to see there max potential till later in their lives.
The only thing that could potentially make me stay with sony would be a single player final fantasy game that didn't blow chunks. Whatever happened to the gold ol days of final fantasy menu/turn-based combat...
Maybe I will even say screw it and go for the steam console i keep hearing about...
That number is not that big when you think about online aspects of games now.
For example, steam has 65 million users now, spread out over different games. A lot of pc games include a multi player part to their single player.
However, not many will entertain the notion of a multi-player part of the game that rarely happens or does not measure to other specficly tailored online expereinces. So, with a large enough user base, you can find people playing an online aspect as an 'extra' if you so ever desire the need to entertain your curiosity.
On a PS3 or PS4, with a still small user base, an online part of a game which is not the main aspect fo the game, will mean it will have a long wait... or worse if the game is somewhat old, that online aspect will probably be good as dead.
In comparison, dota shows that they have .5 million active users when waiting for a game to pop up. Thats just for one game, which takes around 5 mins to finish the que.
If an online game on ps4 has 100k users it could be a lot longer to wait for the game, and not necessarily 5 times the wait since its not only that, that is a factor on longer waits, but to try to draw a perspective that 4million users is not that much when it is spread out over hundreds of titles.
Steam is the way. Forget consoles.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble

What made sony exclusives seem disney minded? They had the most mature minded story and themes for their exclusives.
Metal Gear 4, Infamous, Uncharted, Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Killzone, Heavy Rain, God of War, Resistance, Tales series for examples. And it had more variety in genres too when it comes to exclusives while 360 was mostly shooters with simple plots.

So, your comparing 6 weeks of sales for PS4 to 10 years of availability for Steam.
Awesome.

Has outsold Wii U's worldwide life to date. Better luck next time Nintendo.

I will admit Last of Us was a pretty epic game though, the other ones you listed are not my cup of tea. The other games i enjoy on ps3 are also on xbox. Elder scrolls, GTA, Resident Evil, DMC, Bioshock, Dead space and even final fantasy is starting to cross console release.
