You only mentioned 2 consoles... I'm not even gonna vote on this thing.
So of the plethora of consoles that are available in the coming year, which one would you actually purchase?
There may not be many consoles or the others that are worth listing may not be anywhere near release. 8 possible answers with only 2 consoles is not a legit poll. You could have even added an "I will not be buying any consoles, Im sticking to PC" option. It seems biased. Ouya, snakebite viper, steam console, previous consoles from 2013 that someone may not have purchased yet because they are waiting and maybe even handhelds. Handhelds are being upgraded to the point where they are basically capable of what consoles are just on a smaller scale.

Also saying muffins can include any answer not listed is a stretch.

Muffins can include any answer. Muffins are awesome enough to do that.

You don't seem to have an actual answer to the question offered. If that's the case, it doesn't matter what options are provided in the poll. You wouldn't have an answer for it anyway.

My answer is that I am waiting until the games available match the capabilities of the machines, which usually doesn't happen in the first year. Also my decision will be heavily based off of what games they have to offer as exculsives. Until that time my PC is fine.

Basically my answer is muffins according to the poll.

See? Was that so hard? Just pick Muffins and get on with your day. :-)

For me, Muffins means none of the above.

I chose muffins.  Delicious muffins.  Wrapped in bacon.

I'll wait till the games catalogue get's larger and come down in price. I still love my PS3 and I have over 100 games for it so I'm not going to get bored of it anytime soon.

I currently own a PS4 so obviously that would be the one I want. I love it, although I could do with some more games seeing as there's only like a few games that are any good so far. Probably will end up getting an xbone at some point as well, but the ps4 is good for now.

I'd like both, but my wife would freak.  So I voted for PS4.

A great list of free games (mostly MMORPGs): http://www.mytop10games.com/

It might make a decent topic. My only response is that I want one, and I hope they aren't too expensive.

Concerning the SteamMachines, something I just noticed was UEFI boot support is a requirement for installing SteamOS. This is not an OS or console that is going to be backwards compatible hardware wise.

I'm not sure where this puts the SteamMachine in the list of consoles, other than not yet a major player.

Given the available options, I chose Muffins.

i don't think they ever will be a major player. They're just pre-built, small form factor PCs plain and simple. Once people realize that then I think they'll fade away. They offer no benefit over simply installing Steam OS onto a gaming PC.

Steam OS is the only thing that is half way interesting here. But, I've not been reading too many good things about that, at least not as far as Valve's claims that it will increase a PCs gaming capabilities. So far it seems that, given proper driver support for Linux, Steam OS and Windows perform about the same. Of course Steam OS isn't complete and that could change, but I doubt that Valve has anything up their sleeve. Linux isn't anything new or special and if it could offer better gaming, I think we would have seen it already.

In the end the whole thing could wind up being a big gimmick. The Steam Machines already are in my opinion. I'm iffy on the controller and will have to reserve my judgement until I can actually try one. As for Steam OS, it just doesn't seem like something they really thought out too much. It seems more like a knee-jerk reaction fueled by Valves contempt for Microsoft and Windows 8.

Whether good or bad, the evolution of Steam OS and Valve's Steam service in general will be interesting to watch over the next few of years.

Maybe the intention of the machine is to give gamers a stable place to keep all the information of their games without having to clog up their desktop..

I know for example that I am in a constant fight between what games I want to keep installed and what games I have to delete for the more important things I use my computer for. I know I could get more memory and an external drive etc..

    Just throwing that out there.

Well, we know that there won't be many games for SteamOS when it launches. We also know that people will be able to download and install SteamOS on any machine they build, as long as it fits the specs of a Steam Machine. Mostly if it's new enough to have a UEFI boot loader. They aren't discontinuing any of their Windows options, and they will not have SteamOS exclusive games.

We also know that Valve hates Windows as the only available option for PC gamers. My guess is that they are doing this so that a few years from now, PC gamers will have an option that isn't Windows. People who only buy new games will have the option of choosing an OS that is built to run games, and will likely do other stuff well too. This ensures that Valve can continue to write their games, and continue to sell games to gamers, without having to worry about Microsoft locking down the market with an app store so that nobody can sell something for Windows without Microsoft's approval.

Anyway, it doesn't seem likely that anyone looking for a game console to actually play a lot of games is going to buy a Steam Machine and keep SteamOS on it. Not if they have a library of Steam games right now. They might buy a very slimline machine to stream games from a beefier machine, but that's about it.

Muffins to go with my coffee. But seriously, I prefer my current setup: PC for gaming, PS3 for the blueray and streaming Amazon Prime.

Finally! The poll reached a 100 votes. Hardly definitive, but it's a nice round number.

Ok, so the point here was to see if people wanted something specific, or just a console. So, if you go to buy an XB1, and it's not available, would the PS4 be a viable alternative, especially since it's a $100 cheaper? I would say that at least for people who browse this site, the choice of console is specific, not general.

We have a 360, and I would say I've enjoyed having it. Especially since it was a free gift from our son. If I had actually purchased a console, it would have been a PS3.

I want a PS3 first but it's not on the choices so I voted for PS4 instead. Simply because I had a PS1...then it followed through PS2 then it stopped. I don't know if I can call myself a PS fan for that but I just got really used to the console.

One of the ideas with the poll options was to select the consoles that would cover most, if not nearly all of the upcoming sales of consoles in the coming year. The PS4 and the XB1 are pretty much going to be the market for new console sales this year.

No offense to you, but if that's their intention they are catering to the lower-end machine users, which I find odd personally  (Yes I understand the implications of being able to cater to a larger crowd that way).  I haven't had HD space woes in a very long time, and I am not a wealthy man.

And who has a clogged up desktop these days?  Here's a trick.

    1)  At the very least create a [Games] folder somewhere on your machine - it will only hold shortcuts so it doesn't need to be a place with a lot of space.  (I have one for MMOs, SP Games, Apps and Development)

    2)  Now, create a Custom Toolbar on your QuickLaunch bar, and point it to that folder.

    3)  Now put a link to that folder in the toolbar itself.  Whenever you need to drag new games to that toolbar, use the link that opens the folder and move the shortcuts over.

    4)  No more clutter

    5)  ???

    6)  Profit

Originally I was planning on getting both an XB1 and PS4, but I've come around to the idea that I'm simply going to build a mid-spec PC (around double the specs of either console) with a nice elegant tower and hook it up to the plasma as a media center and just run steam big picture mode. for "console" style gaming.

Solves my need for a blu-ray player (which is currently my ps3), let's me watch netflix and any other web show without paying for an online service on top of it (xbox live). I can skype, google hangout, and basically just use it as a computer if I feel like it.

My only sadness is that I will miss out on some exclusives like Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Uncharted (if they make another one). But other than that, I think I'll be good to go. I mapped it out yesterday, I'll end up spending around $600.

This is exactly the target market for SteamMachines, but they are not ready to fill that niche yet. Give it a few years though, and people building their own SteamMachines running SteamOS will be a thing.
