General: Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen - It's Zerg Time!

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The second KickStarter update for Brad McQuaid's project, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, has been posted. In it, McQuaid champions the $90,000 already raised but reminds fans that there is a long way to go. To get to the goal of $800k, McQuaid encourages fans to reach "deep into [their] contact lists" because nothing is as effective as word of mouth.

So what we're asking from you now is to reach deep into your contacts list and send a heads up to anyone and everyone you know as to what's happening here with Pantheon. There's nothing, absolutely nothing, that reaches as far nor as effectively as word of mouth. We can hit all the spots where eyes are looking, but if the eyes aren't looking there then we cannot reach them. Think about old friends you used to play MMOs with, or the second cousin who was into gaming as a teen, or even the neighbor who always showed interest in your gaming and has always wanted to check it out. Maybe the guy at the barber shop who talks to you about the games they play would want to hear about it. Everyone you think would have an interest in making this happen needs to know, and we all have to find them.

So I guess this is the first Pantheon raid, and it's zerg time! People all over the world telling friends, acquaintances, family about a return to the glory of classic MMOing. This could get pretty epic. A chain reaction the likes of which hasn't been seen since Karnor's Castle. If you can get them here and they decide they're not interested - that's on us. But let's get them here.

Read more, including Update 1, on the Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen KickStarter page.

Brad needs to do an interview with MMORPG about Pantheon, yesterday.  Some Ranger at MMORPG needs to track him down.

I'm sorry, but this thing is a joke.  They're asking for 800,000 dollars on Kickstarter for what?  Is this going to be a MMO?  Really?  Who in their right mind would back this game.  At this point...  I don't even care that this is going to be a product from Brad.  Has anybody actually taken a look at the STRETCH GOALS?  What in the world...  Seriously?

Goal to actually fund the game.  $800,000...

They'll ADD crafting if they make it to 2,500,000 dollars...  Crafting?  You mean one of the most sought after and important features of an MMO won't make it in unless you can make over 1,700,000 dollars over your initial goal?  Are you serious?  That's a JOKE.

They'll ADD -PVP- if they hit the 3,800,000 mark...  So, let's go through this one more time.  They'll add PvP but ONLY if they hit the 3,800,000 dollar mark?  So they won't add another feature unless they make 3 MILLION DOLLARS extra.

How can anybody take this seriously when stretch goals are standard features that almost all other MMOs launch with?  Especially in this day and age.  Even the generic Korean grinders launch with crafting and pvp a majority of the time.  So if they manage to just reach their 800,000 dollar mark...  What are they going to launch with?  A small world with required group content and a "new" combat system?  Ooooooh boy.  Here we go!

I could be wrong, but I think other MMO's like Camelot Unchained, had a much higher minimum goal, like $2,000,000 iirc.

Don't bash the game just because they set the minimum funding goal low and additional features higher. They want to be able to add all of these features just as much as we want to play them, but it takes money. You can't criticize them for setting a budget.

Obviously, the initial development of the game will take over $800,000. They have already stated this on the kickstarter page. It's what they need to get the studio up and started. If they don't get any other funding besides the initial $800,000 from crowd funding, they may have to resort to other options.

@Ridrith ; Brad has stated that he will be seeking additional funding so that all stretch goals will be meet by release.  The 800k is the minimum to get game development started.  He will then go back to kickstarter (like the Repopulation) or seek outside investors so that crafting and the most of the other stretch goals are in the released game.

Brad has also said that anything that doesn't make it into the released game - such as the higher stretch goals like player farming will be added to the game after release, once they are getting subscription money.

Obviously if it takes another 1,700,00 dollars or worse yet, 3,000,000 dollars for them to have enough to cover production costs in order to add integral features of almost any other MMO on the market don't you think they probably should have been asking for a lot more money upfront?  Seems like that would make the most sense to me.  What if they only make their goal?  This reeks of terrible management and ill informed decisions...  They should have a lot more to show before coming to Kickstarter.  That's obviously my opinion but I'm sure a lot of other folks will feel the exact same way.

I was going to sub until i saw the sub par video that they made, HOLY CRAP THE PRODUCTION VALUE AND JUST THE WHOLE THING IS TERRIBLE.

I was cringing the whole damn time and who made that video? Everybody look's so awkward in it and i know not everybody is used to the spotlight but you guys needa "face" for this video because Brad isnt cutting it, that was thee worst thing ever when he threw up some quasi-brah hand gesture at the end.

so bad...not a good first impression at all

Well it's obvious this is a tester to see the reaction of the public those stretch goals will be in game eventually regardless if they are hit or not, this is pretty much what David Braben did with Elite Dangerous if that had not funded then that would have been it no new Elite full stop.

Same here as Brad can walk away I'm sure he could get another job after all he has some clout in the industry and if all the team are ready to commit full time to Pantheon, then as sure as eggs are eggs he will find more money from private funding even if  this goes supersonic and gets millions unless he follows the SC way and goes totally crowd funded maybe lightening can strike twice. ?

I have to say that the game in the video does look like a steaming pile compared to a lot of other games that have come out with less of a budget.

Not great but remember not everyone is a natural on camera, now the kid in the wasteland 2 video pitch was awesome but I digress, take SC the Wingmans hanger episode 1 was shambolic to say the least Eric Peterson was a bag of nerves the production terrible.

Now fast forward to episode 52 and now it's one of the most polished web shows around, and Eric is an amazingly confident entertaining anchor and when he is with Chris Roberts it's great to watch.

This Kickstarter lark is a learning curve not everybody is a silver tongued Garriot who could sell snow to Eskimo's !!

Anyone who's been hoping for an old school game to come along here's your chance. This project is not only going to get is a real MMO but it's going to raise some awareness to games like this(assuming it gets funded). So many people just waiting to see how it does before they donate... That won't help with the momentum to get it funded. You don't get charged until it's funded and can cancel anything before that. I don't work for these guys but hell yeah I'm cheerleading for this! So tired of talking about how good mmos used to be...

Don't get me wrong no fanboi here, but he does state in the 1st KS update all those graphics are place holder not one is an in game asset, just wished they had whacked a big place holder sign on the video.

But to some people like myself it's obvious they are not even close to the final product, I've been in to many Beta's to not to take much heed of a first impression of a pre alpha and know that graphics are months or years down the road from development into the final revision.

Yeah this is the only real MMO right.... people like you are the reason why so many shy away from  kickstarters. game isn't even in development yet and attitude starts flying.

Not sure what you point is here Convo is bigging up the game not dissing or trolling it and just stating a fact about how Kickstarter works,it's not negative at all infact it seems like you have replied to the wrong post no wonder Convo is confused in that last post  I certainly am. ?

This is really tough. When camelot unchained had their kickstater. They were streaming every day from their studios. We got to see them in action doing artwork, playing around with each other, getting to know their personalities and asking them tons of questions in real time. The head guy mark jacobs was doing videos almost every day, on the kickstarter comments section all throughout the day. They had engine tests even.

Pantheon has no studio yet, they're trying to get this kickstarter attention from people working out of their homes. I feel so helpless as someone who wants this game to be made. I've already posted everywhere trying to right the wrongs and get the game whatever attention I can.

I can't speak on what they do and don't have but I do know they are working on the game and building a world.. . Would I of liked more?  Sure but at the same time the team is offering  us something that nobody else is.. Regardless of where its at in its development cycle... The bullet points hit for me.. The videos and all are great don't get me wrong but I was happy enough they wanted to make a game I've been missing for years.

I need to see more before I'm going to shell out cash. Sorry Brad. I loved EQ but I'd rather see some progress before I invest. I think games like Gloria Victis and The Repopulation are games that have poured their souls (and wallets) into and are now able to garner some publicity for it.

The thing is though, the type of player they are going for is the old school guys.   We all have a sense of production and realize that pre-alpha footage is NOTHING that you will see even in Alpha, beta or obviously release.   The guys who are bashing this and critiquing the productions value of the video and the game footage, clearly have no sense of game production (or arguably common sense) and are clearly not the target audience for this game.   After all this game is about great group oriented old school gameplay, not top of the line graphics.   Hell, for a great and true old school style MMO, i'd gladly take those pre-alpha graphics.   I mean honestly, the last great time i've had in an MMO was the last progression servers in EQ1 with it's lovely graphics haha!   It's about community and gameplay, and their target audience gets that, IMO.

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

This games piecemeal by kickstarter stretch goals. used to have fun in EQ playing a bard well better make sure we make 3.2 million dollars or your out of luck.

I dont get you guys. Seriously. They promise what is basicly an enhanced Diablo MMO if they reach the minimum funding. I can live with that. They have a clear focus and dont try to everything to everybody.

Crafting is not a MUST, nor is PvP. Very few MMO's have meaningfull crafting, and I would rather have non then the pointless WoW style crafting. PvP is only something you should do if you are ready to balance the game for it. Most devs short this goal by making two rule/gear sets, one for PvE and one for PvP, which is another case of complete fail. Again, if you cant do it right, better not do it.

Star CItizen is a great example of a crowd funded game that tries to be everything to everyone, and boy, do I expect that to fail horribly.

The greatest thing about this game is that it's not trying to cater to everyone.

It's targeting old school hardcore MMO gamers and that's what I love. There will be tons of people who simply don't get it, and that's fine. They have plenty of new games coming out that will cater to their style as well.
