If Smed can deliver the goods, I'll give him another chance.  I'll put my faith in SOE over...say...NCsoft, EA or Zynga.  Not by a lot, mind you, but just a bit more.

I did? I don't recall ever making that oath. I have every intention of playing Landmark, maybe even Next but its too early to tell with that game.

Also, Smedley did not make SWG, Raph Koster did.

Sounds good! Based on Smed's comment, it sounds like a game I'll want to play.

I'm hoping for pet and mount breeding, an Entertainer class, city building, an amazing crafting system, uber housing, fun world events, all kinds of SWG-type gameplay elements etc.

I'm looking forward to hearing more.

Darth Smedley just wants to feel the hate flow through you.

I think it would be great if they could make some kind of new version of Space Farmer, I mean SWG.

Actually, scratch that.  Smed's no better than the others (just read the closure announcements just now).

Problem is all they make are free games so I wouldn't try it if they released that way.

Anyway - what weird news, first they say they are chunking their pricing to include all titles then they announce closing multiple titles. How is that an incentive. At least they are close enough together that people couldn't say they weren't warned.

The only part of it that was "space game" was the first expansion. Otherwise most gameplay took place on giant planets like most MMO's out there. Except there were several planets, and each one was bigger than your typical MMO these days.

Even after the expansion, >80% of the game play was land based.

That was funny, especially since it brought up a vision of SWG vets pouring like lemmings into the carbonite chamber pit.

Sounds interesting for all the disenfranchised SWG vets out there. Notice he's referring to a title not announced yet. This is not EQN/EQNL.

Not that I don't believe you, but do you have a source for this? I'd like to follow it and see what other information might be available.

    J. Smedley did a Reddit AMA today at 3 pm to 5 pm pacific time.  Lots of interesting stuff there if you want to read it.

In terms of the brand spanky new unannounced MMO, will it be based on an existing IP or something new I should work myself into a frothy craze over?

Yeah, but the real SWG only lasted for two years.  NGE doesn't count.

Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole if Smedley has anything to do with it...also, will believe it when we see it. I think he's telling lies to gain street cred.

Well, Smedley better not disappoint again then.... I am though carefully optimistic.

Then again, this means minimum of 2-3 years to launch or more? A lot can happen during that time.

    QFT.

If he's having a game developed that has more in common with the NGE than SWG, then it will be a cold day in hell tbh.image

Smedley definitely has his finger on the pulse of the players. He knows that SWG vets will fall all over this .

Not every SWG fan is a bitter hater in 2014. ;)

I know I was mad about what happened, but good riddance it was years ago. Time to let go and look ahead. I like the idea to make something resembling SWG again. If I would boycott every company which ever disappointed me at a time, I could not buy ANY game at all!

I'm confident theres a new mmo planned but rather hear more from someone who is not Smed

Smed has a history of telling half truths

I can picture Smedley sitting in a little ahh okay big corner and rubbing his hands together saying "all you former SWG players who swore you will never play a SOE game again will be back' then evil laugh to follow.

Seriously - if they were so concerned about the fans - there would be no NGE

SWG would still be running - if they were really thinking about the fans

This is NOT about the fans of SWG - this is about creating more hype for a new game.

What details do we have exactly - oh yeah - NONE.

So - again pure hype with zero to substantiate anything.

SOE did not want to do the NGE, it was LA.

Can you seriously see SOE messing with a game from Lucas where LA had a major hand in the creation of SWG/NGE (Julio Torres is LA not SOE), and Lucas always sues people mistreating any of their products (They tried to to take legal action on someone from showing the Star Wras movies to the public, and they tried to stop someone from creating Stormtrooper replicas)?

SOE did not not kill SWG, it was LA. LA ordered SOE to shut down the game.

It was something that SOE could say "yes" to a couple of months after it had to say "no" to pleading Star Wars Galaxies fans. So why did EQMac get saved while SWG was not? It came down to licensing, and with LucasArts calling the shots with SWG, SOE didn't have the flexibility that it did with EQMac. SOE's reticent to shut anything down, Smedley said, although sometimes the higher-ups have to make the call to do so.

The only thing SOE/Smedley is guilty of is not being one who calls the shots, and lets others run his business. With this game, now SOE/Smedley will be the one calling the shots

However as a big SWG fan myself, it will still not be SWG, but if the mechanics are the same, then I will definately give it a shot, but may not hold me like SWG did, because it will not be Star Wars

  • Colt47Colt47 Member UncommonPosts: 549

Yeah, the problem was that Lucas Arts wanted a game where everyone could experience the content they created without taking into account the kind of personal investment the current SWG population had made into the game.  The same thing happened at a smaller scale in World of Warcraft with how they did expansions and rendered previous progression content pointless.

At this point in time it feels like publishers and developers have decided to turn the MMO genre into a cash farm and are so attached to specific core ideas that many MMOs feel like they are clones of each other.  Most MMOs are just hub games now that use the leveling process as an extended tutorial and put ridiculously tuned encounters at end game to keep people paying money for minimal content.

Well, that or they go jump into the cash shop item and perk laundering business...
