I still think people that once bought the orriginal game should get there copy of the server code... I think that goes for all MMOs they take offline..
Because that allows the community to keep playing the game they once payed for.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
MY plans on getting the SoE all access took a hit, was looking forward to playing VG again, once I got it.
Too bad it never could recover from the bad launch.
Yeah a little, but I play a lot of PS2, DCUO and some EQII and will play EQNext/Landmark, and depending on what this new game is it might beasily be the best MMO subscription deal in the industry.

None of them ever achieved any success. None of them were that good, Vanguard being the best of the lot and it was always troubled. EA is still by a large margin the worst MMO developer. Most of these were developed by outside studios hence not home grown. Only Free Realms was developed in house I believe.
I am not a big Smedley fan, but this was a good business decision.
You cant say that prior poor decisions are negated by a recent good one. Making shit games, turning good games into shit, taking over shitty games for whatever reason and keeping them shitty or making them worse are all indications of a terrible publisher/developer. Shutting down games especially following lies about no plans for that to happen pisses people off and when its a pattern that stacks on other lies, cash grabs, misrepresentations, ineptness, etc. stacks a pile of shit so high no other company compares. I would easily buy a turbine,ea,or any other "bad" developers game before a $oe one.

It's definitely a good deal for people who had the DCUO lifetime sub, because now they get a sub to every SOE game for free for as long as DCUO continues running.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
I really hope Vanguard gets a proper send off on it's last day. Though I'm not a current player, the game provided me with many hours of entertainment. Can't say the same for the others, but I'm sure there are people out there who enjoyed them.
Finally VG can RIP. This was a game with su much potential but smed and brad failed. I wonder why players still played this game. It was always not finished. So SOE now you should make the HUGE announcement: SWG2 and the mmo-world would freak out! :-)
I always chuckle inside when people say "investment" when they talk about time spent playing a game. Unless you were planning of cashing in that investment in some way, it's not an investment. It's a waste of time. And if you had fun doing it, it filled its purpose. Emotional investment is of course a different matter, but I hope even that is more directed to the friends and mates you've come to know through the game and those are still there, no matter if the game closes or not.
Just find something else to waste your time on. It's not a matter of life and death.
Originally posted by evilastro The death of Vanguard must be a blessing for the old-school kickstarters out there.
Hmm - maybe, still, VG doesn't have that many fans to begin with.
Also no guarantee that ex-VG fans and players are kickstarter types, I'm sure some are but I'd guess a very small %
Either way I think this won't make much of a difference to Pantheon, maybe I'm wrong.
A lot of people on the Vanguard forums were saying they were cancelling their yearly sub and putting it into the kickstarters instead, and directing others to do so.
Who knows, either way I think the few desperate Vanguard players don't really have any other options now. Its either donate or give up on MMOs.

well, people can move on, sometimes they have to. I never thought I'd end up in EVE Online, but with the help of the recent Xmas sale on Steam, an improved intro part in EVE and a nice guild (corporation) I have found something I never thought I'd find again in MMOs. Aside from the new upcoming ones, but you never know if they will turn out the way you hope/expect...

Wish I could play EVE online I tried twice but ended up so bored.
Sad can never escape back to my blood mage and the only true fantasy WORLD.
R.I.P. Vangauard saga of HEROES!
Thanks for the great memories and friends I met.

Sad news about Vanguard, I have played it since beta and Vanguard have been a game that I played steadily over the years, but it was time to put the game to rest. I understand why it is taken down with the rest of the games. And hopefully the portfolio of the rest of the SOE games will get the well deserved attention required to keep them interesting and ever growing.
I really enjoyed what I played of Wizardry. It really brought back that hardcore-your-choices-matter in mmos, the risk of death, the long corpse runs, items breaking very easily, healing being a rarity, soloing was almost impossible forcing group play etc. Sadly my friends didnt care for it enough to continue but what we did play was amazingly fun. It's sad to see it go, it didn't get much time here.

you cant keep a game going if it has virtually no one playing it and anyway how long EQ1 and 2 been going and they still bringing out expansions for them .I will say im sad to see Vanguard go should have brought this out a year later
sony boggles my mind free realms has a healthy user base, vanguagrd was in maintenance mode for over a decade and never should have been left running. their excuse that this is tied to security updates and their logn system is a cop out. they just announced a swg2 like mmo coming and what if no one plays it. they just trased the value of their station all access.

Vanguard was released in January of 2007.
2007 was over a decade ago in Internet time.
2003 and before that was over a century ago.
We need a conversion up in here yo. 1 internet year =
Originally posted by Seelinnikoi Thats why I play WoW, at least I know it wont be shutdown so soon. All other time and money investments in MMOs are a waste more sooner than later.
EQ, UO, and DAOC are all older than WOW by several years and still ongoing
So sad to see VG on that list. Easily one of the best mmos on the market right now. If it wasnt so poorly managed it would be HUGE right now... I shall jump on before the end to revisit telon...
Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships Waiting on: Ashes of Creation
Gutted about Vanguard closing!! I loved that game back in the day! Played it 6 years on and off. I don't think I have ever been so sad about an MMO closing It had such a rushed launch, but never truly recovered. Still, I have some wonderful memories of Telon, and will return before it closes.
Originally posted by Hariken I agree about Dragons Prophet. That has to be one of the worse programmed mmo's i've ever played. I don't get why SOE hasn't dumped it yet.
Dragon based MMOs and RPGs, both PC and mobile, all seem to be hot at the moment. Lots of new ones created last year.

damned soe, closing down vg after all this time. that game was a goodun. and if soe had put their mind to it it would have been a good little earner.
guess they need all their devs and staff for eqn - although cant see it holding peoples attention as long as vg held the attention of it's fans.
guess with a few less games out there, more players for eso when that is released in a few months
i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.
Whats your excuse?
