Do you want there to be an option to hide player names (Displayed above them) in the game world?

Black Eye Games is aiming for alot of realism in their new mmorpg Gloria Victis. So should nametags be visible above everyones head? Personally I think it would be more realistic, you cannot tell who someone is under all that armour in real life let alone from 200 metres away, so learning someone's coat of arms would be actually important.

What do you guys think?

should very much be optional.  i myself prefer to have no nameplates.   (although seeing someones name on mouseover is preferred for me).   i can also see how other people would prefer them.  the more UI options the better.

Actually I know of quite a few games that you can do this on already its just some sort of graphical toggle in the UI most times though it does help from time to time having that tag over their head that way I can remember if its someone thats killed me or I killed at one point or another or just an enemy or ally in general. But meh to each his own after a while in a game you'll most likely want some way of identifying characters other than a picture being that even in games with quite in depth customization there still tends to be fairly generic features every toon tends to have.

Well this is a game with ffa pvp so if you want to play an assassin or archer type char with light gear would't you want to be able to hide behind some bushes without a nametag giving away your position? Wouldn't it be better to be recognized by your custom gear, guild tabbards/banners instead? And you can see the name either by mouse over or just in combat log?

a game as simple as league of legends fixes this.

no reason nameplate cant fade along with the character.

anothr example is starcraft 2. a building's shadow does not become visible until the building is revealed.

    this is a trivial problem.

in most games fading nametags just become unreadable while they still clearly give you away from a long distance. don't play LoL btw so can't compare to that game.

Names above head is immersion breaker to me.

Get rid of names above head:)

Mouse over combat log is better option.

I want to know who kills me so I can go murder him back :)

Or talk to him and tell him to say sorry, I'm pretty pacifist.

I think it should be an option, but anyway player names should be showed only at very short distance

I believe things like this should never be removed or left out from an mmorpg. It should always be the person playing that limits the realism he/she experiences. Games should have options for options' options.

Hey Celiah ! The board is set, the pieces are moving!

Id say no to nameplates, i basically say NO to any immersion  breaking feature.

Ofcourse you can put everything as an option so people can choose whats best for them, but like ben said, it can be gameplay breaking aswell if you like to hide and suddenly a nametag shows up since you crossed your mouse over that spot.

I see both sides of the argument equally, but would have to say it should be made optional.

What about a system where you have to ask people for their name or you need to come up with a name for them yourself if they refuse to do that. And from then on at a certain distance (should be really close) that person's name (either from them giving it to you or you giving them a nickname) you can have the option to have their names displayed.  Of course this can only happen if they aren't concealing their face, if their helmets visor is down for example you can't recognize them and a name won't show.  That way you can't see who is running over that hill 500 yards out or people can hide their identities if they want to try some spying or subterfuge.
