Bad press for ESO beta

RavensworthRavensworth Member UncommonPosts: 78

I am so tired of the Gaming press slamming a game before the Beta is over. ESO should not have dropped the NDA. It could kill a game like this especially with a subscription model.

The problem with the Press is most of them are no more qualified than I am. I have been gaming longer than most of the MMORPG staff have been alive. I could have beta-tested PONG. But they didn't let us and we were so excited by it we didn't care about the bugs.

I am also not a Elder Scrolls Fanboi. I can take it or leave it. Will I buy ESO? Probably not at the moment but not because of the press but because I cannot afford the time for another game. I play LOTRO and that's about all I have time for. But if I had the time I would play ESO.

What pisses me off is that these horrible press reviews can kill a game before it gets going. W.O.W. would die at launch if released today. 2 hour queue's. Horrible crashes and bugs that weren't fixed for months and an Endgame that required 40+ raiders with an insane lockout and Random loot drop that meant it could take more than a year to get your gear. Hardcore all the way. I loved wow. I put up with all of that because the rest of the game was awesome. But if it was released today you wouldn't hear about the awesomeness...All you would hear are the bad things. Hellgate London died because it was released way to early and they didn't have enough servers....Hmmmm Sounds familiar...

wow on launch was better than eso is now, and I been playing wow since early betas, being european i  played both korean/asian and na betas, and still was better experience than eso

saying bad press is killing the game, I would say press is too forgiving considering how much eso charges, no mmorpg charges full console price ( there REALLY WAS NO MMO that charged 60$, even worse in uk where its 50 pounds.. to normal 25-35, latest final fantasy was 15.. or 20$), + sub + cash shop

Bad press is killing the game because eso droped nda for press, so according to you zenimax should lie about everything and never drop nda until launch  and trick people into buying the game...thats some good logic there

Playing the victim might actually get more people on board. People love to root for the underdog.

This is wrong.....when wow launched it no bgs, crazy class imbalances, and a TON of glitches (falling through the world, mobs being unkillable, etc)

Funny how you don't complain when they don't do anything but kiss the backside of companies and don't actually report the bads about a game.

The last part I quoted, lol, yeah right. You chose to suddenly get all offended and talk about one single game, nothing at all about the other games that just plain sucked and got slammed, but you are not a fanboy of that one single game you got pissed off about.

As for qualifications, being a gamer, doesn't make you qualified to be a reviewer, that takes at least some sense of unbiasedness which you clearly cannot do since you think its wrong to say anything bad about a game, in beta or not.

WOW was the worst mmo launch i have experienced still to this day. I couldn't even log in for the first 5 days or so.

If you leave your faith in the press to whether you personally will like a game or not I would have to say you're a fool. They praised SWtor and see how that played out. How easily sheople forget...

stick with lotro, bro. it for ur own good. what the press does is purely the matter of fact about the game. nothing more or less

You must not have experienced many then, And sorry, I was in on day 2 of WoW and while there were server issues, WoW doesn't even rank in the top 10 worst MMO launches I have been in.

so do you prefer everyone lying and praising how wonderful a game is before launch when its clearly bugg ridden or badly unpolished, etc etc etc, and then everyone buys it because theres no trial, then get disappointed, then no refund, then money wasted?.... NDA shouldnt even exist. At least the way NDAs seem to work right now are to hide things that should be fixed before launch. Im not talking about ESO here but in general with all video games, specially the ones who charge money and subscription on top of it.

WoW wouldn t have died if released today, because at least it s a decent game. ESO on the other hand.
  • Press usually praises high-profile MMOs even when they're mediocre, so it's really strange you instantly get tired when they finally do some honest bashing. ESO must be really bad considering how hard it's getting slammed. Bet they'll still make a killing on preorders, though. Lots of gamers are so desperate to find that Next Big MMO it's all too easy to sucker them into dubious preorder deals.

Bad press due to being a mediocre game, plain and simple. You can like the game but you're seeing a trend of bad press for a reason. This close to release, it's hard to use the "it's beta" excuse even seeing as this beta is a live build.

I will be passing on the game due to playing it myself but I am curious how it's going to end up, I'll be surprised if subs stay in post 6 months.

The problem is the Press, like any other "make money" at any cost system is open to bribery and corruption.

Offer any reporter or site/youtuber/blogger cash and they'll bite your hand off to get it.

$25,000 if you say the next 5 SoE games are awesome... SOLD! etc. etc.

And with some of them it shows, and shows badly! Take the RPS preview, it's done by the same 1's that loved 2 other well known MMOs, both of which has War(s) in the title and then got caught out on the Wars one's forums by reportedly being "on their books".

Just love a good soap opera, shame they don't get the fact that while they line their sweaty palms that they are harming other games.

No trials. No tricks. No traps. No EU-RP server. NO THANKS!

I was discussing this early today with a friend when we were playing Age of Conan: Unchained. As much as I enjoy watching some select gaming Youtube channels, most of them have absolutely no weight to give their opinions. As much as I enjoy watching AngryJoe's channel, his tag line is literally: "Just one Guys Opinion on Games, Movies & Geek Stuff", yet a number of his viewers treat him exactly like a real critic. His formula works well when he is doing, say his Rome 2: Review, where he is frustrated consumer; but flash forward to his most recent comments about ESO and you start realizing he sounds exactly like the average forum member here. His opinion brings nothing new to the table and he simply reiterates what many of us are already thinking. He lacks the insight necessary to bring in new points of view on the subject matter.

I go to a critic to read an expert's opinion, to a get different viewpoint on a topic that I'm interested in. A good critic will always make you say, "Oh, I didn't think of that.", and use their experience to get you thinking about the topic in a different manner. The best example of a great critic would be Robert Osborne, the film historian on TCM; when he speaks you listen because he has been there and done it for years.

The gaming press (which would be more IGN/Gamespot/Kotaku etc.) are really laughable most of the time. We know corruption is pretty common with them, but they still hold a considerable weight to the average gamer, one who doesn't actively seek out other opinions. Most of their employees also have little to no gaming industry experience at all; I can't go to IGN to find out any in-depth software or hardware information because they don't even bother to gather it. From a company like IGN, you expect them to go to that level of expertise, to get people like me who aren't as technically savy as most to understand what is going on underneath the hood. They use the same terms that me or my friends do, that the average Youtuber does, that the average forum-goer here loves to spout to make themselves sound experienced.

    crit·ic

    noun
    1. a person who judges, evaluates, or criticizes: a poor critic of men.

    2. a person who judges, evaluates, or analyzes literary or artistic works, dramatic or musical performances, or the like, especially for a newspaper or magazine.

    3. a person who tends too readily to make captious, trivial, or harsh judgments; faultfinder.

No, he is definitely a critic. What I do find funny is that whenever someone says something they don't like, they go well out of their way to attempt to dismiss them. Stating things like "no weight to give their opinions" as if there is something in the world that magically makes an opinion go from nothing to something. And better yet, actually tried to make "professional" critics seem as if their opinions matter more than others.

It just goes to show just how desperate fanboys are right now.

finally after 5 long years of waiting a mmo that is worth installing. Feeling like a good version of age of conan. Runs/performence is sick/insane even with mid/bad setups and even there the grafics looks great; like the single player game, there are the same atmosphere. And like the single player, it plays like one by now, missing group quests big time. And i heard you can play the tutorial (first 10 minutes) with an trail account for free!

WoWs launch is definitely in my top10 worst launches.  but my issues were mainly with the massive loot lag.

It is getting some bad press for a reason. It isn't like these people are making things up just because they can.

hey buddy let me tell you something... NDA's and betas and press etc do not kill a game.  The only thing that can kill a game is the game itself.  If it sucks ass, like ESO does, and this comes as no surprise by the way, then the fore mentioned publicity avenues is the least of its troubles.  Get real for a minute - the combat in Elder scrolls has always sucked a big fat pickle.  They had pretty worlds, lots of lore and OK'ish everything else, but the combat sucked so hard and they did NOTHING to fix that for the MMO version.  It blows my mind that they did not even try to make combat more entertaining - it's like they figured "ok we have had success with skyrim - use that engine, copy/paste everything and add multiplayer servers and hope for the best".

Fuck man. serious?  and for the real kicker of this retarded saga, they make it subscription based when clearly even the sub king blizzard is re-making titan to fit into a F2P model.  I mean who is in charge here?  they clearly have missed the last memo of MMORPG's and what it is supposed to be.

So yeah, I'm sorry OP but these guys created their own demise - don't blame press and NDA's for a shitty game - especially when you admit that you won't even buy the game yourself in its current state.

who cares what the press says I know I dont if I like a game I play it or if it interests me then I might read some reviews but seriously who cares wth is 60 bucks anyways to evaluate it for 30 days and if you like it you stay. Or you can do like most people here on this site have done and just sign up for beta testing and try it before you buy it yourself. Its not like they ever change mechanics anymore in beta's all they are is free press for their games.

Also to the ones hating on this game so much get a life seriously do games rule your lives or something? Its pathetic to see the same posters in every single thread on this site slamming this game. We get it you do not like it what are you babies who need attention and have to scream pay attention to me? Dont play it if you hate it that much but to hear in every single thread that is ESO related the same people over and over again just hating to be hating gets annoying after awhile.

After seeing Angry Joe's gw2 reviews my impression was that he had a casual at best interest in mmos so I'm not expecting an experts opinion on it.  Really if you're only reviewing the first 9 levels and not that much of an mmo fan to start with about all there is to do is compare it to other ES titles, which is probably why he spent so much time on the $15.  I also felt like he would have meant to say buy to play rather than free to play but wasn't savvy enough on mmos to know the distinction as he spent all that time on the $15 a month rather than the box price which every previous ES game has had.
