Really long time to unlock your creation tools. Be ready for some grinding first.

KnotwoodKnotwood Member CommonPosts: 1,103

So I decided to try this game while waiting for ESO and EQ Next to come out.

I'm already 16 hours into solid mining and chopping trees,  and I have only unlocked half of the stuff needed to create stuff fully.

Theres 3 tiers you have to go through to unlock or build crafting stations needed to create more designs.

I find myself really Grinding on these mining nodes and chopping trees at this point in Tier 2,  I've so far only now gotten Smoothing tool, which allows you to smooth your creations.

for the most part, I think if you buy Alpha, be ready to expect a grind on mining nodes and chopping of trees before your able to actually unlock the designer tools and crafting stations to fully make what you want.

So far I have nothing better to do and so this should burn off a couple months easy.

Never thought to do that, I have my place in Tier 1 area, so the thought never cross my mind.   I'm going to go to Tier 3 areas and do that right now.

I seem to build on my claim for a couple days, then mine and craft for a couple. I'm pretty pleased that it takes time to get tools and picks. If it was all given the first day, I would log off after all my creative juice were spent.

I'm personally one tier from the last pickaxe and it's only been about 8-10 hrs of playtime.

So I dunno what you're up to exactly.

Like others said, I use other peoples crafting tools.  Also, if you're neglecting your jewelry, you're doing yourself a disservice.  It ups the rate of finding a bunch of those rare specimen you'll need.

I will second the other persons suggestion, get the stuff to craft you the ring for your level that helps you get more rare items when you harvest.  MY burled wood jumped up big time, mine has a 3 rating, and my wife's has a 4.  I have gotten over 60 burled at times from 1 big tree with it.  I usually get 30-40 on average with it and a very nice copper axe...Had bad luck with gold axes, but the copper axe will do for now, till they mess with tree tiers more and plant/flora stuff is coming.

We made all the top stations on my wife's plot, but you don't really need to make any, I think Landmark is the type of game that their will always be people happy to let you use their stuff, be social, and probably want to show off their building.

Axes are borked right now, I have blue gold axe that is worse then your copper, 105/77 I think.

I did craft 20 gold axes, 3 blue, none were better then my legend copper that had 99/99 and 4 discovery.

Does not look like copper can go above 100 and gold can, but not by much.

Did not really matter as my legend axe was just gone when I logged in the other day, using the blue from above now, but I do not chop much wood these days, have what I need, and hopefully what I need for the next tier of workbenches as well.

Unless they switch to striped wood for the next, ooohh the QQ on the forums then!

Reminds I need to buy popcorn.

If everyone does this, there won't be any work stations anywhere.

I personally suggest that players in an area team up to make the workstation on a single claim and share it. It's the fastest way of doing it.

took me like 16 hours top played time to get all my build tools, 2nd day i had them all and i made all the crafting stations. yeah as stated earlier u can use other people crafting stations so it be even faster for those who come in say week down the road when there a few high end crafting stations everywhere to use :)

OP, you're going to get pretty bored and have nothing to do soon, I suggest you go  try FFXIV: ARR instead, much better game.
  • KnyttaKnytta Member UncommonPosts: 414

I agree with the OP, the grind to get enough resources and tools to build is too hard in the beginning of the game at the moment, people will quit early if its this tough when it goes live. It will be good when salvaging of some of the materials from old tools are in an as Picard said, group harvesting and similar things. At the moment the grind to actually build something is not that fun.

We are using the advanced crafting stations from neighbors too, we have a close one that has everything as top level, handy.

The game still has a VERY good chance of being a great game.

Gathering will become very different soon when they put in caves, layers and re-arrange how ores are placed. This version where ores are just on the surface is not how EQN will be and Landmark will change to reflect that. The question is how this will change the grind, progression and time it takes to get mats, and whether the inclusion of PVE is what is needed to liven things up

Yes indeed, it is not hard at the moment it is just an enormous timesink, several (I read 6 - 10 on the Alpha forums)   hours of harvesting for each step in for the  high end Picks is not good and the need to make several of every pick to get a good one is a somewhat gamey was of solving things. Caves and different layouts could make a difference. We are just figuring out the system and what to do and not but interestingly enough there where less people in game this weekend than last weekend (when it was down for quite some time), well see.

These systems has to be updated and as I understand it they will be.

The "tools" are convenience items, and you can build anything you want without those shortcuts.

Going out and harvesting what you want to build something with what you can gather is/was fun. I didn't even know there were additional tools I could make. I made them, and was pleased that there were shortcuts to some of the things that I wanted to do, but honestly, with the selection tool (first one you have to craft), that was all I ever needed. Copy/paste and boom, huge time saver.

  • RattenmannRattenmann Member UncommonPosts: 613

TL;DR version, since answered on official boards as well:

If you want to build and ONLY build without doing anything else, EQNL is the wrong game for you. It is an MMO with fighting, collecting, harvesting, hunting, searching, exploring, crafting AND building. There are plenty of free tools on the web that allow you to build whatever you want, without any kind of MMO stuff attached.

To go deeper and answer some points:

    1. High tier Crafting Stations can be found about everywhere, including T1 isles.
    2. With "grind" the OP means farming for a whole 4-6 hours.
    3. All current tools require low-mid-tier ressources at best.
    4. You will find several nice areas in those 6 hours of "grind".
    5. It is only grinding if it is not fun. But it is.

MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.

Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

First couple weeks were rough with limited claim options and resets everyday that had a lot of folks losing their crafting stations. So during the time I was leveling up my skills and gathering, I never saw another crafting station I could use. Now that things are stable, there a lots of crafting stations around. Some of the bigger and more built-up claims have multiple stations as well.

I tend to mix up my time in Landmark between gathering and slowly building up my claim out in the boonies.

  • PigglesworthPigglesworth Member UncommonPosts: 260
A major part of the game is exploring. If you just find a claim and do nothing but build, you are missing out on most of the game. The small grind required really just orients you to the rest of the game. After the small sampling, if you don't like the rest, you don't have to do it anymore.
