I don't see why I should buy this game

HrothaHrotha Member UncommonPosts: 821

Zenimax spoke about variety from which we can choose and build lots of *cough* unique *cough* builds.

What we now have is ONE MIN-MAXED BUILD PER CLASS - that IS ONE PREFERED BUILD PER CLASS. That means 4 EFFICIENT BUILDS IN TOTAL! *

* quoting Foundry and talks with Veterans.

...where all other builds are not comparable.

Wait, could we have forseen this? Wasn't this previously in other MMOs aswell, promising skill-variety?

Yes, I would give this game at least one month of my life if you could pick at least one 2nd class when hitting 50. For example Sorcerer ontop of a Nightblade, or Templar ontop of a DK. You name it.

But being limited in this way? Seeing at a certain point only those 4 builds + maybe 2-3 others in PvP and that is IT?

I am nowhere on earth seeing why I should invest into this. I am currently so happy that I have not yet pre-ordered.

Why are they launching in less to 1 month already? There is so much that needs to be addressed and here we will find yet another example of unpolished greediness that drags itself down in less than 3 months. How very, very sad. And with it the entire TES franchise.

Humanity has a tendency to ruin everything that was once good.. like children, never knowing when to stop until they hit a wall. Very few examples right here in the gaming section that have proven different. I can only think of the Witcher or... Dark Age of Camelot. Well we will see about the next DAoC.

Anyway, I really need to dig HARD on ESO to buy it - and that should never be the case

In the end this games target audience is the casual of casual player. Thus why it wont be sub based very long.

They want the type of people who will forgive bugs, forgive log in screens, forgive all the problems this game has and wants to play because they think it offers them a lot of cool things to do.

"Serious" players wont last long because beyond PvP (which will require a build that actually works) there isnt any 'challenge' in this game. When you can offer so many builds that 'arent any good' and they can still accomplish stuff the game isnt much of a challenge.

The performance of the game has been so bad that people have gotten away from the other things wrong with this game. Which cant be a positive thing thats for sure, when there are so many negatives to talk about that you loose focus on some to harp on others there are just too many things wrong.

But a 'casual' guy who doesnt know any better probably wont care, at least once its free.

    ok. Don't buy it.

Not everyone obsessively crunches numbers and only plays the absolute most effective build.  I don't care about effective, I care about enjoyable.  I am going to have multiple Nightblades, multiple Sorcerers, and no Templars at all, because given that we can only have five skills at once (ten with weapon swap) I am treating each individual class skill line as if it were it's own class, and each of the skill lines from Sorc and Nightblade interest me more than any of them from Templar, with Dragonknight being worth one character for the fire chain pull, even if the other skill lines end up meh.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall free me.

this game doesn't require you to min max, its made so that no matter what you play you can play it to your own accord and enjoy the game.  There are a ton of builds each have very useful abilities/uses.  I'm sure there will be top builds but those will be very very specific and will possibly narrow gameplay variety.

I don't know about you but when I play a game to enjoy it I don't worry about being the best of the best, etc.   I play it to immerse myself, play with friends and explore fun new builds that make the game more enjoyable since they may give a whole new way to combat or non combat.  I think the one thing everyone forgets is, is to have fun and just play it.  That is one of the very top reasons why players burn out so quickly they're just not having fun their own pace, the best part about the journey of any game is the time you spend getting to the end and not the end.

Yes, and if they'd release KotoR 3 today, no one would buy it because of TOR. You really think so?

No, I don't see this at all. TES is a very solid single player franchise. Fans of Oblivion, etc will still buy the next TES game.

From what I've read from lvl 50 internal testers - none of those are very viable at 50.

They are playable sure - if you have a group that will carry you of course - but they are crap builds.

Now - that doesn't mean that they won't be fun to play for some players - if you have fun - that's all that matters in the end.

Im not sure they are depends on the player i guess. Some can only play cookiecutters others destroy them in wierd combos they cant even imagine

I really don't understand threads like this. I came out of the beta with a completely different opinion. If you have played the game to level 10, and come to the conclusion the game is lacking or just plain boring, find the game you enjoy and play that.

I for one had the best time in my life in an MMO since playing DAOC in 2001. I will definitely be there at launch...

The reason to buy ESO is ofcourse to play a game that is in development, many of the older games that have gone f2p lay off devs and produce less and less content.

You happen to have links for the apparently optimal builds identified?  I've only played around in beta to lvl 10 or so on each of the classes, and I have some guesses but before making this my next time sink . . .

Or it could be that every build isn't actually useful and will get owned in areas past level 15. Half of those builds wouldn't even pass the level 20 area where you have to fight 4 mobs at the sametime with healer mobs. Weapon DPS builds ranged or melee are garbage compared to ANY of the class builds and dumping points into stamina is just gimping yourself for later levels.

I played each class, wanted to see what would make me happy .. the only class i couldnt enjoy was mage .. and thats usually what i play in mmo's .. so ill be something else this time, cause i did have fun with the other classes .. i dont care if everyone else plays the same build as me .. so what ..

This is my probably biggest grip with the game.

Weapons are just a filler. ESO is 100% magic :/

I don't care about the min/max stuff.  I'm not buying it because...it isn't very good.  Doesn't play that good, doesn't look that good, nothing new storyline/questing wise, plays like every other hack and slash mmo out there.  Why?

It's nice to see a game give less rewards, than all the newer MMO's from the last years. I suffered from awarditis playing those games. EsO gives a bit old-fashioned feeling in this sense.

OP finally understands that more choice is not equal to better game. in fact it limits viability and puts more strain on developers. Keep it simple stupid, is an IT term and should not be forgotten.

    b) what's your cookie cutter specc for mage? i bet my mage specc counters it :)

and seriously, if you hate cookie cutters suuuuuu much, why read em up? ^^

I have in lots of hours and i have played every type of builds up to the level i could and i enjoyed every one of them. The most fun one i found was a inferno mage with magica build and putting a lot of points into the top skill tree. If you are limited to only 4 builds then its not because the game don't let you its because you don't know how to play the different builds and how to get the most from them.

Maybe this game isn't for you and you should try a less demanding game for your skill level.

Ooh hey this might be a good marketing strategy..."You aren't smart enough to play this game, so you probably shouldn't play" It's the reverse psychology trick!   I like it!  Bethesda you need to hire this guy.

Well, I've also been thinking about that as well. It'll be like Rift, where there are only several "perfect' build and everyone will use it. Why bother with mediocre/crap build if we can be the best?

However this is an mmorpg, there are min-max players (they've loudly asked for DPS meter and such) and casual players who don't even care if they sucks as long as they're having fun.

  • atuerstaratuerstar Member Posts: 234

The min.max mentality is going to exist in any game with even the slightest depth to its combat and gearing. Your problem doesnt seem to be with the game but with a particular outlook on how to play it.

Dont play with those types of players if it drives you to such highly emotional responses. Find a guild that is just there to have fun and try your experimental builds to your hearts content. Dont blame the game though. Every mmo suffers from this. Every mmo cavorts and twists in an endless balance battle to try and counteract the maximiser mentality and the way players flock to that unique and powerful combination of class and skills. The underlying truth is those players are simply chasing a different carrot than you and define fun in a different manner. Just ignore them and play the game your way as the game still caters to your taste in carrots.
