I was invited to the February US beta and WoW what a major disappointment.. (Again this is my first impressions that I experience this is not a review)
But I must underline the intro in the oblivion prison they were so so soo boring, Art, Npcs, colors, lore, quests, no challenge at all just one button press nothing more, no extra secondary quests or minigames, no sense of urgency..
Starting Island (it would actually be fun to see my character fall from the sky drop in the water and have to swim to the island but I guess that would be too cool and fun to implemented .. I guess being left with a non interactive non context form in a text conversation is way more fun!!!)
The island was also so boring felt like it was heavily scripted , npc had no routines, In the very limited time I had, I encounter no dynamic questing(like find a item on the ground that started a mission, or a npc that pop up and started a quest.)
Graphics
They look so old and and above all the viewing distance seems so limited even at max on settings, there aren't even pretty wallpaper backgrounds , my graphics were in ultra and colors felt so bland and nothing pop up.
Combat
Boring not visceral or bloody at all, one of the biggest and worst combat in a MMO I have seen. (1st person wtf? seems like it's there to see how dead and ugly the game looks) *The beta i was in had no collisions or physics from impacts*
Bugs and lag
I got stuck in one of the main quests in deactivating some traps, plus the game was so so so laggy(server stress) again I'm from EU and I think the beta was in North America still it was impossible to enjoy.(only got this on weekend US prime time)
No side quests, distractions or minigames
I saw nothing of these, fishing is just about clicking and looting no gameplay there(nothing like SWG fishing), lockpicking is very annoying at best..
I just reached level 4 but I did put some 5 hours+ in the game but everything I found was just bland all npcs were lvl 3 like me and provided no challenge, I didn't get to try crafting since it looked like you needed recipes to do so, didn't found any interesting quest in terms of writing or gameplay mechanics
It seems like the game can be fun in sieges and crafting seems to have some potential but why is it soo boring? to get there *why cant we taste some of in the starting locations?
I'm a fan of TES but this ain't it and not even the basic features that keep you hook that MMOs have are present here.

Nice review, I disagree with just about all of it, but the tutorial is crap, I'll give you that much.
Also, you might want to try to play Aldmeri Dominon or Daggerfall its about 80% better (No Exageration, Night and Day). The Ebonhart area is just about everything you said here, probably because it was made first.
Thanks for sharing, OP.
ESO is clearly not your kind of MMO. Good luck and happy gaming !

The starter quest has been revamped pretty significantly and level 3 is not really enough to judge. I don't know how it took 5 hours to get that far, but I know people say level 10 or even 15 and it gets better, for me; I liked it about level 7.
Dagerfall has been the easiest to get into for me. Seemed more fun. AD was the first I tried and it seemed to have more run around and click stuff things.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
If I judged every MMO by the first three levels, I would have quite the genre long ago.
I'm kinda of a completionist so I spend 1 hour in the oblivion part opening chests and looking for secondary quests making sure I explored everything, I then got to the island kill some bugs did some scouting started some quests, picked loot and resources for crafting, tried one of the main quests found a bug that could not be bypassed, got massive lag and stopped playing tried to pull my forces to login in the game again to try crafting, the server was telling me my beta had not started think it was massive lag.
The best beta MMO I play was probably the first Guild Wars everything was polish, looked good and interesting..
I'm just happy I did not buy this ESO and I'm more into realistic and immersive sandboxes , I wasn't expecting nothing great from ESO back to waiting for Black desert, Archeage or Repopulation !

maybe that's why they made the starter island optional now?
because it didnt feel enough like "elder scrolls" open world gameplay?
just a thought ^^
uh, and i disagree with nearly every point of your "review".
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Yes because of the majority of feedback was negative for it.
I dont see the reason to flame the OP when his opinion mirrors many others which led to the addition of 'skipping' the tutorial.
The thread is mainly about your first experience in oblivion... Seriously didn't anyone think it is very very boring or is just me and AJ. A ghost pops up says you are the hero, you kill the most common creature a skeleton, you see no daedra, no npcs are challenging so you don't want to avoid them and leave that place as fast as possible, you are escaping from a prison and is everyone from themselves, why no grouping quest or a strong boss for lvl 1 and 2 to motivate grouping and socialization so you can get some unique loot?
Why no quest to release or help other npcs? or a quest that gives you just a subplot or a information to put in context a future quest?
I don't think I even found any grouping enemies it was just one vs one?!
Yes I was actually in lvl 4 when the game gave me massive lag, the npcs I was fighting were all in lvl 3 so not much exp boost from them, plus I always explore what is around me to start quests so I can then just focus on completing them altogether, it's more efficient that way.

Your pc must be terribly optimized if you got massive lag at lvl 4.

Look for the definition of lag, lag is not FPS drops.

I just started playing Wildstar this weekend, and all I have to say to everyone who has complained about ESO starter......
you have no fucking idea what you are talking about.
2 hours into ESO i was like " oh wow, I've never been so INTO quests and quest dialog. Also I actually read notes and little shit I find lying around for no reason other then to have it reveal some interesting lore/events/monsters in game 50% of the time."
2 hours into Wildstar beta I was like "OH JESUS, finally got through all this starter zone crap, that was un-immersing, predictably linear, and lacking in anything that I would consider remotely enjoyable." one word: SIMULATIONS !!!! grrrrr
Granted that I have put far more hours into ESO now and this is only my first weekend playing wildstar, the fact that anyone thinks that that style of mmo is enjoyable is beyond me. Customization is cool, housing seems nice, and the warplots interests me but all that means nothing when the road to get there makes you want to gouge your eyes out.
And In relation to graphics, ESO is not jawdropping like Dark souls w/ mods or skyrim w/ mods but neither of those are true MMO's w/ over 100 people on screen at one time. The ONLY game I can think that might have better graphics ( and really I'm talking animations and the high level armor sets) is TERA.
In closing, to OP... If you think this game/intro is boring I'm curious what you are comparing it to?
A. Wildstar ( definitely NOT, maybe its because I did these types of quests a long time ago, but holy shit this felt dated in how lacking it was)
B. WoW ( I only played it for a short time but it was when it first came out and it was straight fetch quests w/ no immersion out the gate)
C. GW2 ( this game sucks in terms of endgame but I do think that the game held my attention and was enjoyable while leveling)
D. Skyrim/any other ES series game ( are you retarded? it mirrors several other ES game intros, and in terms of gameplay/graphics .... THE OTHER GAMES IN THE SERIES ARE NOT MMO)
This was my first post on this site, I just felt like I finally needed to say something... even if it has been said 100 times before.
To be honest the post is only about 5 weeks late .....don't agree with it but the info is just dated at best
It's a combination of lot's of things.
