Aion or rift I cannot decide

NadriellNadriell Member UncommonPosts: 197
As the title suggests I'm looking into which on of these titles I should invest some time into. Now I'm not by any means abpvp person. I can if I have to but I tens to avoid it. However aion seems to be catering more towards pve as of late.

Then there is rift. I started rift right at launch but then abandoned it as I was going through a horrible divorce. Now I have the opportunity to pick it up again and while I know it is pve and raid based I have concerns over its f2p model..

So to summarize:
Aion: pvp truely free and dungeons / raids???

Rift:not truly free, complex class system pve

I would like opinions on both summary points so I can make an informed decision.

RIFT 100% hands down. My wife and I both just resubbed a month ago and still enjoying it. ..... As for the comment "not really free" to play, it most certainly is. The ONLY thing you MIGHT want to spend money on is souls if you did not get the river of souls before the free to play. We both subbed because of the tiny things that make no difference in the game. Patron rewards are small like, 2 hour buffs. As for pvp, its there for sure and in spades. Not to mention, RIFT is coming out very shortly with another update for both pvp and the soul trees (among other things)... So its a great time to come and join the fun

On a side note, RIFT also has an APP that you can use for your phone (if available for your phone).. it gives you nice information about when pvp is going on, events in the realm and also mini games for loot and things.... nothing to lose for re-trying RIFT my friend :)...

Oops, forgot to mention that RIFT also has the whole cross server thing, and Instant Adventures (perfect for leveling new toons).. where you just go around and do quests with others (not a pug thing, but kinda sorta similar because you don't know these people)... the Instant Adventures can take you to other servers and vice versa.  The housing is nice (dimensions) and the community is just far , FAR better than Aion.

We tried to go back to Aion but once we were in there, realized why we left in the first place.. if you want WoW "Barrens Chat" the entire time you are there, and then have those same people ignore or even give you crap the entire time while you quest, then by all means, go to Aion..................... :)

I wouldn't waste money on either game to be honest. If you want a pve experience then play either everquest 2 or lord of the rings.

Why do you say RIFT is "not truly free"? Their cash shop system is by far one of the most fair ones in existence. I have played both, and I would suggest RIFT. I'd be playing it if it wasn't for college.

Dumb answer to an honest question the OP had.  Why waste money, on a FREE game... I won't even talk on that remark. But Lord of the Rings is the WORST example of a free to play right now. There are HUGE, HUGE money walls in that game, you have to pay for the content past the original game itself.  Not with RIFT though, it is all free. Research  it.

    OP please ignore this comment.

Aion is decent but the cash shop is not as good as Rift's.

Rift is amazing when it comes to sheer value, you can play the entire game for as long as you want and not spend a single cent, and the best part is you truly will not be at a disadvantage for not spending cash.

Rift is honestly a diamond in the rough.

If you do not mind one up front cost The Secret World or Guild Wars 2 are both amazing games. I lean more to Guild Wars 2, but alot of other gamers feel put off by some of its more game changing decisions .... No Quest hubs, no Trinity.

Can't afford anything i would go with Rift. Don't mind an up front cost GW2 is the best bang for your buck out there.

    Lolipops !

I have no intention of listening to him, anyone who says "spend money" on two F2P games lost credibility there.... im installing rift at the moment, and im eager to get my feet wet again. It will be like i just started playing it as i don't really remember its release, my attention was completely focused on leaving that soul sucking succubus of an ex-wife i had.

Well, how much time are you looking to invest?  I love Aion's graphics, giant housing zones, and just overall feel... but I don't play the game because of the mechanics.  Since gear can be +1-20 and socketed it means there are two very punishing upgrade systems you have to go through after you get a piece of gear.  I just do not feel like investing the immense amount of time it would take a new player to become competitive.

Well... and the community... three days after a new dungeon comes out it's like good luck getting a group if you're not experienced, this is definantly a game where you need a guild.

Rift is one of these games like wow where you mow through mobs like a knife through butter. Aion hands down you will fall asleep in rift because there's no risk of dying..

How does he lose credibility, and what is so wrong about spending money on a game you like? I just don't understand these F2P players they claim that F2P games make money, but none of them seem to want to spend any money on them :P.

As for the OPs question, I would go with Rift. It would probably give you the best experience, I however couldn't stand the animation in that game and left a 15 days into my 6 month sub :P.

I would personally go with Aion because it's still one of my favorite MMOs, "truly free" as they advertise, and has a very unique style and feel to it. Rift drove me away because too much of it was copy and pasted from other MMOs to an extent that I always felt like I would be better served playing anything else that did the concept first and/or better. I think if you don't mind that then Rift can be a great compilation of ideas from MMOs over the past 10 years. I'll always vote for Aion for being a little different even if it's on principle alone. I still enjoy going back to it from time to time over tons of other mmos that I'll never play again like Rift.

I noticed this in Aion which was one of the factors that turned it away from  me... however the assassin class in that game is THE most fun stealth class i have ever played.

Yeah, I can understand that. I can't disagree with anything he said as much as I love Aion so that's a conditionary weight against my vote. You have to enjoy some punishing time investment and risk vs reward especially with the well-known RNG elements to getting all your gear socketed and improved.
