This is a presentation of the Unigine. Just look at the ridiculous view distance! THAT is what still bothers me in MMOs today: the distance is either foggy or a fake background (like sometimes in SWTOR). It just doesn't feel real to me.
This looks awesome. I know MMOs are a different thing. But one can wish, right? ^^
Impressive view distance is known in games from the sim genre i.e. military simulation games. Since such games need a very long viewing distance the PERFORMANCE is a lot more demanding.
In the last years either such games with a long range view had more limited pixel densitiy or/and the demand of the system peformance was very high and even then such games had often some issues with ingame performance and it took quiete a while until the game performance was patched/improved. (i.e. Arma 2/Arma 3)

Funny I have the exact opposite. Lately I installed Skyrim and modded the hell out of it. When I pumped everything to the maximum visual appearance it was extremely realistic and beautiful, yet only one thing was off and I couldn't pin point it at first. Then after a while playing I figured out that the only thing that was ruining the realism were the mountains that were visible in the background. While everything looks amazing up close, when you zoom out to see the big picture everything looks extremely artificial, because no one actually bothers to design them to look realistic from distance.
MIP mapping will do that, and at that great distance if there's any detail it will be very blocky.
Thing to also remember about cameras and even human vision: there will be fog regardless at extreme distances, as the eye will focus on the details upfront (just like perperitual vision is blurry). It's part of the realism that will be "off" when trying to keep both close up and distance shots super sharp and clear.
Check out this engine, it doesn't have an extremely detailed area like the one you're talking about but it looks like you make a whole world or galaxy.
lol That's like one of the most next Gen engines listed here. That's the Company creating Infinity: Quest for Earth. They have Seamless Transitions between planet surface and Space.
VoxelFarm is nice as well though extremely expensive $100,000 for a license for just voxel based Terrain. They only want to do business with AAA Studies even though VoxelFarm started out back in 2010 as a single person's project in Voxels as a Indie Developer... It started out as a Hobby and morphed into what it is today when EA noticed the work being done on it.
With vanguard being shut down, I've been looking for a new game. The thing is that every single game has this enclosed feel where you can only see so far away with hazy fog not to far off. I cant handle it and was really hoping to find something else in this thread. Such a bummer! Seems there is nothing out there for me now
I shed a tear, a hope that virtual reality will someday be real, and we shall see such beauty with our "own" eyes. And we shall walk towards that distance.
Mortal Online has probably the best view distance in any MMO, and the best part is the places far away are actually accesible not just some background...

i hope not .. walking in a virtual world by a mouse-click is already tedious and not fun to me. Actually i have to walk? Forget it. Now if there is a teleport ....
It'll be very interesting to see how Elite's procedurally generated planetary terrain will look from the surface once they make the planetary landing expansion. Seeing as the planet is visible from space and the transition has to be somewhat smooth, heightmaps and general terrain layout would have to match reasonably well when the planet is seen from space and during the transition to the surface.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
