Will ESO lead to a Fallout MMO?

R.LimaR.Lima Member UncommonPosts: 135

Here's a question that just popped up in my head: If The Elder Scrolls Online proves to be a massive success, will ZeniMax also make Fallout Online?

Bethesda isn't making ESO.  That said, I would be very happy to see a Fallout MMO made by Zenimax Online Studios (or by Obsidian) but I really, really hope Bethesda never touches Fallout again.  Probably too much to hope for, but it would be nice.

Ummm it is really strange how people are forgetting that Zenimax owns Bethesda, and umm of course Zenimax Online Studios, in fact Zenimax and Bethesda are pretty much the same entity just one is the developer and the other is the publisher.

No one knows the exact outcome of the lawsuit Bethesda had with Interplay.

Regardless, i think the Fallout MMO is a hotly contested idea and i am betting Bethesda is waiting to see how there sister Dev ZOS, does with ESO.

CazNeerg you might want to look into things prior to just posting false facts.

I personally wouldn't want to see it.  I only say this because I don't feel like ESO is that much like Skyrim.  I realize Skyrim wasn't exactly like Morrowind/Oblivion either(a good thing in my eyes).  I just don't feel any great desire to play the game.  When I was exploring the world killing things I didn't feel much of anything.  The best thing about the game is it looks pretty IMO.  Not being able to swim underwater really frustrates me.  The quests didn't seem good enough that they would compel me to play through them over the many good single player experiences I have lined up.  I'm hoping they will make another Elder Scrolls game (single player) instead.

He is correct in this and you are confusing Zenimax the parent company with Zenimax Online Studios which is another subsidy of the company that owns Bethesda.

It would be like calling Bioware the same as Origin just because they are both owned by EA.

To the OP, I hope they do not if they want to do it the same way as TESO and take an open world game and break it into pieces for heavily themeparked gameplay.

Fallout is not a very good settings for an MMO. The whole idea of emptyness and a lone survivor goes down the drain if hundreds of players infest the wasteland.

But i agree.. Don't let Bethesda to touch this IP with a 22-feet pole.

As Tbau already pointed out, my facts are not false, Bethesda and ZOS are both subsidiaries of Zenimax Media.  The same people own them, but the actual employees working on products are two completely different groups, working from different locations.  I seriously doubt Zenimax Media has any intention of delegating any online games to Bethesda, their role is developing single player games.  When they formed the new company to make ESO, they didn't name is Elder Scrolls Online Studios, so it might be fair to assume that any future online games they decide to do will go through ZOS.  Thankfully, since ZOS seems to understand what makes a good RPG better than Bethesda has in recent years.

I doubt they would want to compete with themselves.

from people from the beta who complain when said said anything bad about the game bugs and lame things, zenimax have nothing to do with bethesda :p

but a fall out MMO would be nice? could be, but it can't use the same kind of system capital wasteland and new vegas did

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

I want a Fallout MMO so hard!  Bethesda did an AMAZING job with Fallout 3 and Obsidian did a great job with New Vegas.

My only real concern would be that a Fallout MMO would clearly need to be a sandbox and highly player driven.  So far all they've really managed to do with ESO is pump out another EQ/WoW clone.

No, but we can always hope. :-)

Before you all start hoping for a Fallout MMO, try to think about what you like in particular about Fallout and then how Zenimax would MMOify it. ESO is so far it seems not my cup of tea, while at the same time I love Skyrim and Morrowind. So yeah, atm not really waiting for a Fallout MMO.

I don't agree though that a MMO version would mean too many players for the world to feel desolate enough. It was possible for Fallen Earth and still feel desolate, so I think it is possible. Just make it large enough and have enough starting places (which all changed later on in FE but meh, it failed for other reasons to begin with)

How about looking forward to Fallout 4? Not every IP needs to be made into an MMO.

    This ^^^

I would much rather the devs focus on making good stories/scripting presentation of events, than making a new MMO.

Bethseda are making ESO just not in name, all their assets and a lot of their in house developers who worked on previous elder scrolls games are working on ESO. Even todd howard was a consultant.

That's a really odd statement for someone who is a member of mmorpg.com.

    why?

There is no requirement that you have to like MMO, or like making IPs into MMO to join the MMORPG.com forums.

In fact, look at all the haters of modern MMOs here. Some don't even like MMORPGs.

Odd because I should want more MMOs? Or, because you think a member of mmorpg.com should display less sanity?

I like MMOs, but I don't like bad MMOs. Making an MMO of a successful single player IP is usually a road to ruin because developers/publishers think the IP will drive the game, and they focus less on making a solid game. Also some IPs don't lend themselves well to being MMOified (some people think this of ESO as well).

I agree with one of the above posters that Fallout is special because of the story of being the lone wanderer in the wasteland. I don't think MMOifying it would create anything other than a by-the-numbers post-apocalyptic MMO with Fallout flavour.

The only caveat is that I actually find ESO to be a pretty good MMO and I would play it even if it was Younger Parchments Online (see what I did there? :P). If Zenimax made a decent post-apocalyptic MMO, and it just happened to be flavoured with the Fallout IP then fine. But then that's about making a good MMO irrespective of the fact that it would be Fallout.

The game doesn't even exist and your brain goes into autopilot and thinks it will be a bad mmo. If you have such a negative view on mmo's maybe you should find another genre.

There may be some amount of crossover, but in terms of the overall design of the games, it's clear that very different approaches are being taken.  The last Elder Scrolls game to dedicate as much attention to meaningful player choice as ESO does was Daggerfall.

Seems a bit silly to be on a mmorpg site if you don't like them. But i won't stop you from indulging in your daily dose of masochism.

Just because someone like MMO's does not mean they want to see everything become one.  I would prefer them work on the solo game an MMO just seems doomed to mediocrity.  I can see it already,  When you start out we all escape the same vault, and we are the hero of the world.  Nothing worse than that crap in an MMO.

Then stick to single player games if you want to be a unique and special snowflake.

It is .. at least i like some and play some MMOs.

I have no clue why some will still be here while proclaiming they have not played a MMO in years, and like no MMOs.

Why should i? Even i can be a unique and special snowflake in a MMO and also have fun, is there some reason i should ignore MMOs just because it has a different label than a SP game?
