Obviously you should weight if the positive experiences the game provides compensates this specific negative thing in the chat, or not. Your GF aparently thinks no. Either way, a anonimous chat with thounsands of people in games and in any place of the internet 100% free or racist, sexist and other offensive things is a UTOPIA. If you seek this utopia, you will never play a game where there are chats with thousands of participants.Absurd.

On a side note, the many people have been saying words have no power (unless you let them) are complete fools.
They do two things (and more):
- They spread ideas around you (even if you as an individual resist the thought), and ideas become reality
- They affect individuals when they get repeated over and over again and there will be a point at which you will let them affect you (children are particularly gullible, but so are adults given sufficient time). Think psychological harassment.
I kind of have my own filter for things like racism. Can't be bothered anymore with pure ignorance.
It's only a different matter to me if a person does so in front of me in real life then he/she will have a issue with me.
But on the world wide web there is so much ignorance I just ignore it.
Why are people so thin-skinned these days? Do you *really* feel the need to find offense at every remark that's tossed into the air, even if it's not aimed at you? Do you have nothing better to do with your life?
I take offense at remarks that are directed at me, personally. Anything else, meh... who cares? I let other people worry about themselves. That's part of what people are supposed to do, be responsible for themselves.

Defamation of character applies to real world issues usually pertaining to businesses or someone's perceived inadequacy of service from said person or business.
Defamation laws are there for a reason, to protect real world issues people have with one another. No one knows anything about anyone else in the setting we are discussing, which is another issue entirely, and has no applicable relation with defamation, libel, or slander.
A random person who you will never meet, nor know, nor they know anything about you, is not the same. Apples and oranges.

Would be interesting to know how many of the people posting racist comments in game chats are actually racists. I'd wager most of them are just attention seeking kids who don't even really understand what they are typing.
That's not an excuse ofcourse, I always report these people. They need to learn that being obnoxious has consequences.
Luckily most games deal with these things and hand out warnings and bans (even if it takes a bit).
For much of this post, I agree. However, there is a list of words that cannot be used in any other way other than their negative intent. I am sure we can all imagine a few. These should not be open to interpretation, and should result in some sort of disciplinary action as soon as the enter key is pressed.

At what point in a social encounter do you think an offense occurs? Is it when someone is trying to say something offensive? Or is the moment someone is offended by what someone else says? The answer is the latter btw. Your intentions or knowledge of a person does not disctate if someone is offended or not. Like many people have aside, they don't care what other people say and to them they are not being offended. But if someone else is, that is legitimate. Its not always about you and your experience when you live in a world of other people. You must recognize that other individuals act and react differently to things than yourself and that is a valid human emotion, just like your indifference is valid.

OP you allowed them to win and if you give me a moment I will explain.
They are not racist, evil or stupid, they are not white purity or black power, they do not hate, they are a corner of the internet who have a specific idea of fun and that is to troll you.
To engage you, to upset you, to interrupt your enjoyment, they are usually quite intelligent and study psychology, they will use your dead child, your wifes cancer, your race or gender, war and famine they do not believe anything they say it is specific to affect you or someone in chat to evoke a response even being banned is a positive outcome to them because they won they bothered you enough for you to take time out of your game to report the, they know that long after that report is sent what they said or did will bother you..
It is a game in itself and if you assume it is just young people or greifers you would be wrong.
Beta is the place you will find them a lot because it is usually free and they can recreate, admin are overloaded with bugs.
But you will find them everywhere and the ones who are best at it you will never even catch on it is happening.
Some of the most intelligent people on the internet engage in it, they create an issue then sit back and enjoy the fireworks or posts like this, your tears feed there engines.
By there own peers they are judged by how much anger, frustration and pain they can cause.

Not necessary.. its preferable that some one gets upset at real life issues.. than an imaginary or real insult to their favorite game.
Until we see a REAL ID system in place, anonymous = zero accountability and people will do what they are going to do as if moral standards and the rules do not apply to them.
On another note, people are way to sensitive and really need to "man up"... If you put yourself in that environment you should know the consequences and accept that there will be a certain level or crap you will have to deal with... We do not live in some Dr. Cocteau Utopian society (Demolition Man) where everyone is joy joy, and being a dick is outlawed.
Trying to blame the system and the developers for "not thinking of this" is why there are so many lawyers in business... People can sue for lacking common sense...
