It amazes me there is opposition to the original premise of: racism has no place in the MMO community and why is it not being actively fought against? I'm inclined to believe that some of the people so vehemently arguing against the OP may be the exact sort of people the premise wants to fight? Methinks you doth protest to much. It's not complicated. Bigotry creates a toxic environment for people. It's not fun to feel unwelcomed. Game companies recognize this fact, because as has been stated previously, they include language in their EULAs stating it won't be tolerated. Game companies function to make money. People who don't feel welcome end up not spending money on that game. It's in the company's best interest to be inclusive to all. Eventually that horrible community the game companies enable drives away business.Anecdote: I had two WoW subs myself, a sub for my son, and a sub for my niece. I got a sub for my girlfriend to introduce her to the game. Everything was fine, I showed her how to use the /ignore button, and then a racist and sexist series of exchanges on Trade made her cringe and we had a long talk about it. I told her how awful the community was and that I pretty much kept to myself and a couple of close friends and she asked me, "Why do you spend all that money to keep to yourself?"I didn't have an answer for her. Why do we give these companies our money to enjoy a social (allegedly) game when we keep to ourselves and have to fill our ignore lists with names to keep immature little cowards at bay? So Blizzard loses five monthly subs from my family and I. Does that really matter to Blizzard? Not in the slightest. I have to hope it adds up over time. Companies that aren't Blizzard really can't afford to lose people due to this issue. It doesn't have to be so toxic. Even a little nod to doing something about the foulness would help.
Obviously you should weight if the positive experiences the game provides compensates this specific negative thing in the chat, or not. Your GF aparently thinks no. Either way, a anonimous chat with thounsands of people in games and in any place of the internet 100% free or racist, sexist and other offensive things is a UTOPIA. If you seek this utopia, you will never play a game where there are chats with thousands of participants.
I'd rather have educated and well informed people than blissfully ignorant people.
It's not like we can protect everyone anyway, so individuals should have the intellectual tools to protect themselves against other ignorant people - otherwise they will just end up like "them".
That said, I believe that most company will act on report of discrimination (skin, religion, gender, you name it). This is taken very seriously, as it should be.
Also normally, when you call these people out on their BS publicly and tell them they have to stop, most will stop (not without throwing a last "dare", but you know you've won then).
Much of this thread and your post seems to put the onus on the ones being subjected to the racism, not the racist. I'd rather them educated than blissfully ignorant. The /ignore feature makes us all blissfully ignorant of the problem. While on the other hand, having your account warned, punished, and then banned as I suggested in my OP, goes directly to informing the racists that their behavior will not be tolerated. Perhaps it would leak into their daily lives as well, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. At least the problem would be laid at their feet and not the victims.
There is the problem with your whole premise: Words don't make victims. Words can't harm anyone unless they are giving the aggressor the power to do so over themselves.
Absurd.
You're saying that the entire area of defamation law (libel and slander for example) is baseless.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.
How to become a millionaire: Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
On a side note, the many people have been saying words have no power (unless you let them) are complete fools.
They do two things (and more):
- They spread ideas around you (even if you as an individual resist the thought), and ideas become reality
- They affect individuals when they get repeated over and over again and there will be a point at which you will let them affect you (children are particularly gullible, but so are adults given sufficient time). Think psychological harassment.
Why are people so thin-skinned these days? Do you *really* feel the need to find offense at every remark that's tossed into the air, even if it's not aimed at you? Do you have nothing better to do with your life?
I take offense at remarks that are directed at me, personally. Anything else, meh... who cares? I let other people worry about themselves. That's part of what people are supposed to do, be responsible for themselves.
I'd rather have educated and well informed people than blissfully ignorant people.

No, I'm saying racism online from a random person on the internet who knows nothing about you or has any way to libel or slander you is baseless.
Defamation of character applies to real world issues usually pertaining to businesses or someone's perceived inadequacy of service from said person or business.
Defamation laws are there for a reason, to protect real world issues people have with one another. No one knows anything about anyone else in the setting we are discussing, which is another issue entirely, and has no applicable relation with defamation, libel, or slander.
A random person who you will never meet, nor know, nor they know anything about you, is not the same. Apples and oranges.

So what it has power .. it is impractical to police the internet. Just ignore the words you don't like.
Would be interesting to know how many of the people posting racist comments in game chats are actually racists. I'd wager most of them are just attention seeking kids who don't even really understand what they are typing.
That's not an excuse ofcourse, I always report these people. They need to learn that being obnoxious has consequences.
Luckily most games deal with these things and hand out warnings and bans (even if it takes a bit).
I'd rather have educated and well informed people than blissfully ignorant people.

Well, for any existing and comfortably installed problem you have to act in two parts: immediate reaction and future prevention.
I don't believe "ignoring" someone should be the first reaction personally, as I said, people should call out those guys publicly on chat while reporting them (though I'm pretty sure that if the "cleaning team" doesn't come for another 4 hours, I'd rather ignore the individual too than listening to them for hours).
And again, I haven't seen a single game not tackling those issues as much as they can. This is a big taboo and extremely bad press for any company to let those individual proliferate so just from a marketing standpoint it wouldn't be allowed anyway.
Now, I don't think it is possible to create a chat filter for this issue since they are ban-able ideas expressed with non-banable words. And fortunately, there isn't a thought police yet, so we have to wait for those individuals to "speak up" before we can get them reported and banned.
For much of this post, I agree. However, there is a list of words that cannot be used in any other way other than their negative intent. I am sure we can all imagine a few. These should not be open to interpretation, and should result in some sort of disciplinary action as soon as the enter key is pressed.

At what point in a social encounter do you think an offense occurs? Is it when someone is trying to say something offensive? Or is the moment someone is offended by what someone else says? The answer is the latter btw. Your intentions or knowledge of a person does not disctate if someone is offended or not. Like many people have aside, they don't care what other people say and to them they are not being offended. But if someone else is, that is legitimate. Its not always about you and your experience when you live in a world of other people. You must recognize that other individuals act and react differently to things than yourself and that is a valid human emotion, just like your indifference is valid.

OP you allowed them to win and if you give me a moment I will explain.
They are not racist, evil or stupid, they are not white purity or black power, they do not hate, they are a corner of the internet who have a specific idea of fun and that is to troll you.
To engage you, to upset you, to interrupt your enjoyment, they are usually quite intelligent and study psychology, they will use your dead child, your wifes cancer, your race or gender, war and famine they do not believe anything they say it is specific to affect you or someone in chat to evoke a response even being banned is a positive outcome to them because they won they bothered you enough for you to take time out of your game to report the, they know that long after that report is sent what they said or did will bother you..
It is a game in itself and if you assume it is just young people or greifers you would be wrong.
Beta is the place you will find them a lot because it is usually free and they can recreate, admin are overloaded with bugs.
But you will find them everywhere and the ones who are best at it you will never even catch on it is happening.
Some of the most intelligent people on the internet engage in it, they create an issue then sit back and enjoy the fireworks or posts like this, your tears feed there engines.
By there own peers they are judged by how much anger, frustration and pain they can cause.
First and foremost, racism in any form is wrong and discusting. Now that I said that, the OP is trying to race bait. I personally think this type of issue should be discussed in a more appropriate venue, and not a gaming site.

This is about gaming. MMO chat policies specifically.
The two subjects are not mutually exclusive, not by a long shot.

Fk, either grow up and deal with the world of anonymous slandering, or have mommy unplug the cable. It's been going on since the beginning of time and will continue until the end. By /reporting or /crying or /whining-in-forums, all you're doing is giving power to the person you're bitching about... kinda counter-intuitive in this day and age. If words from someone elses mouth somehow defines your personal self-worth, you have issues, not them.
Exactly IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE INTERNET YOU SHOULD DEAL WITH IT IN A GROWN UP WAY.
This thread is completely pointless been happening since the net came online.
If you cant teak words like aman over the net you havent gotten to that age yet to take words like a damn man and you should mature a little more.

Actually this is about somebody trying to create drama where none needs to be. This site already has plenty of drama and drama queen's without having to interject the race card. Its pretty simple.....grow up and deal with it such as in life. /Report /Ignore - have a nice day.

do you wanty me to start a mob? noone can do anything its the internet there are schematics for bombs and poisons thqat kill in a heartbeat on here.
Exactly be proud of your race. Because someone says something online about.. an african? say damn right and ill eat yoour soul in this game like i ate this fried chicken.

...are you damn kidding me? unplug your internet now...right now...
Not necessary.. its preferable that some one gets upset at real life issues.. than an imaginary or real insult to their favorite game.
Until we see a REAL ID system in place, anonymous = zero accountability and people will do what they are going to do as if moral standards and the rules do not apply to them.
On another note, people are way to sensitive and really need to "man up"... If you put yourself in that environment you should know the consequences and accept that there will be a certain level or crap you will have to deal with... We do not live in some Dr. Cocteau Utopian society (Demolition Man) where everyone is joy joy, and being a dick is outlawed.
Trying to blame the system and the developers for "not thinking of this" is why there are so many lawyers in business... People can sue for lacking common sense...
I think it's even more interesting that racism is ignored as a game mechanic almost entirely in games. I realize this topic is about real racism, but it just shows how dumbed down MMOs have become now. Being a different race used to mean something. There were different hatreds between elves, dwarves, humans, orcs, gobilns, gnomes, etc. and each had their own things that made them unique. Perhaps why people are so bored with the fantasy genre is because it's become so simplified in nature now.

I kind of have my own filter for things like racism. Can't be bothered anymore with pure ignorance.
It's only a different matter to me if a person does so in front of me in real life then he/she will have a issue with me.

Actually this is about somebody trying to create drama where none needs to be. This site already has plenty of drama and drama queen's without having to interject the race card. Its pretty simple.....grow up and deal with it such as in life. /Report /Ignore - have a nice day.

What are your other Hobbies?
