I was not planning to play AA. I was afraid that it's too PvP oriented, and I usually hate PvP. 1st time I've tried closed beta and quit one hour after, because I was upset by the graphics. I disliked the style, not the engine, witch is quite good - CryTek.
After a month I've tried AA beta again and found the game more exiting that I thought initially. That was Russian closed beta.
Now I'm playing Russian open beta since pre-release and VERY happy about it!
The game is really fun and have a lot of aspects "what to do". There is some PvP in reasonable amounts, that do not scare to death PvE players. There are just a lot of different activities for players, so they can pick one or several they like most. And the game is quite group oriented, while still having a lot of choices for solo players.
There are some technical glitches in game client and servers sometimes goes down, but AA for now is the only MMO worth playing, from my point of view.
I've been in ESO beta, and I think that ESO competely sucks, compared to AA. Worse graphics, old traditional and outdated MMO design, badly designed classes. From my point of view ESO is the game for Skyrim funs, not for MMO players.
AA is not a game of "pay to win" kind. To fight other players you even don't have to subscribe. For real cash one can buy only a few suits, that are all craftable in game, and labor point pots, those are used for faster craft leveling, witch is not a necessary thing "to win". Only other application for same labor points pots - are to sell a lot of them on auction, to gain in-game gold. This acts like a counter measure vs gold sellers. And having zillion of gold in game do no help one "to win". That only spoils fum from my point of view, but works for players with limited game time.
"XlGames has already agreed to have racial quests grant experience and gear from the cash shop be less superior to crafted items"
Good to hear that Cash Shop items will be "less superior" to crafted items in the western version of AA.
So I suppose it was "very superior", but now it will be "less superior"... hmmmmm....
From what I've read a lot of people have said that there was gear players can purchase with real money that's overpowered since 1.0. I did hear from someone the other day on Reddit that they're not that great, so I don't know. Although, from another article I wrote not too long ago, I had heard that there was I believe a ghost mount that was faster than any obtained via playing the game. Scapes primarily confirmed via Trion that the mounts shouldn't be an issue and left the rest to the whole, "No Tricks, No Traps" bit. Which seems to be a popular phrase as I saw it also used by Hartsman.

I haven't gotten hands on with AA myself, but I do believe the labor point potions has been a pretty big issue. Anyway, despite the whole controversy over 1.0 and the community getting their pitchforks out, AA does look like it can be a cool game. When the westernization is here I'll be certain to check it out, in my opinion if it's free to play, why not? I know I've gotten plenty of time out of several F2P's.
Anyway, from 1.0 I've heard mixed things, making me think they're straying from PvE at times, meanwhile other times PvP. I know one major thing was the ocean being locked down by safe zones, so some people were annoyed by that. Just as an example. Glad to hear your input on ESO versus AA.

There are plenty of US players playing and I know there's an "English patch" going around. I quote it because I believe it's a ban-able offense but still commonly used none the less. As it's not from XLGames.

There's been a lot going on as of lately, but I've only started getting involved with AA recently as well. It's good to see a new Community Manager on AA as I've heard the old one (if there was one) wasn't very great in numerous ways. So this could hopefully be an easier way for the community to get their voice heard and then brought to Trion and/or XLGames in a professional matter. By interacting with several communities I've tried to help in doing that as well.
Fortunately though, it does sound like Trion is finally giving AA the attention it deserves as opposed to say a month or two ago.
Edit: Following up on what I was saying about Trion giving AA the attention it deserves and them finally giving us information on release and what not. They confirmed the North American and European beta's for 2014. What quarter of the year is another story =P
Where there's a game, there's a player, I'm that player.
I've being playing ArcheAge RU for around 6 weeks now, it's a breath of fresh air. I wouldn't describe it as a COMPLETE sandbox experience, but there's still such a vast amount of things to enjoy in this game, finding the time to participate in it all isn't easy.
Those of you commenting on the "dated visuals" really need to actually EXPERIENCE the game before judging it, it's one of the better looking MMO's I've played.
I'm also slightly perplexed as to the "grind" one or two of you have mentioned in the early stages of the game. I was level 15 within 1 hour of creating my first character, obtained a basic glider and decided to experience crafting and farming (which is also very in-depth).
I haven't enjoyed an MMO this much since SWG, I only hope Trion honour their word and concentrate on the sandbox experience.
Just to add I only began playing ArcheAge whilst waiting for ESO to launch, I didn't expect much and intended to use it as a temporary time killer. I have since cancelled my ESO pre-order.
They IP blocked other regions because Koreans who hated the 1.0 patch migrated to the RU AA and a huge amount of English speaking players who haven't gotten it yet in the West. An English patch for clients was produced and distributed freely for any and all, it's currently still being optimised for any interested, and this possibly was the reason for Trion to get XLGAMES to stop the RU version from getting all the players and the money. They implemented the IP block but quickly turned around and stopped it for a revised method as they lost about 75% of all players on the RU servers and people were reversing payments to the RU company for micro-transactions and the like.
TL;DR RU AA was losing almost all their money from players and they changed their mind and got a revised action plan from XLGAMES.
It took NCSOFT 8 months to port AION to NA back in the day. This took to long. I was excited 2 years ago. Not so much anymore. I am more interested in Black Desert now.
I might give it a try when they finally bring it....I guess...
If you read the article you would see that the goal of the IP block is to keep Korean AA players from fleeing to the Russian version, they probably don't care about Americans. Which is kinda hilarious and quite telling.
Trion is doing Korea to 3 languages .. English, and I believe the other 2 are French & German. All in one shot inside one release date.
Arguably, they could have translated English first, released it, then did other languages later. Either way, someone was going to get upset. There is a big fanbase in Germany, so why piss them off, for instance?
Why piss off everyone by dragging your heals for years longer than it should take? They should have released in English first and then moved onto the others. Instead, they've taken so long that most of the people that would have loved to play it don't care anymore. This game had HUGE buzz in the sandbox community at one time. That has largely subsided now.
What exactly is "longer than it should take?"
Who says the buzz has largely subsided anyways? A vocal minority?
Generalizations never make for good statistical science, especially with opinionated results
You know a game is good when someone goes out of their way, just to bad mouth it. Out of their way, meaning creating a new account just to post 1 time =D

MMORPG already ran an article on the two community reps last week.
And Rift is very likely not a 'cash cow'. After all they moved several devs off of it and onto Trove.

This happened to me with Diablo 3. I waiting so long in between II and three, that I honestly lost all my motivation to invest in the series again.
Then I read the reviews, talked to friends who play it, looked at what Jay Wilson said, and realized I lucked out losing my motivation to buy the game.
I think the same thing will happen with this game.
You know a game is good when someone goes out of their way, just to bad mouth it. Out of their way, meaning creating a new account just to post 1 time =D
This is exactly why I would have bought ESO, without even playing it. Yes, I love the game, and yes I'm a big elder scrolls fan. But, when people go out of their way to hate a game, sometimes it's best to check the game out and go away from the game that is hyped.

So, you steer clear of hyped games, yet flock to EQN .. Okie dokie!
Actually, the ArcheAge community isn't trying to hype this game, but rather just get the word out to sandbox minded people, that there is a game available with freedom.
Themeparker's won't be too interested, and thats cool. If they talk about it enough though, even complain to others, then every few people not interested pulls one stranger out of the woodwork to join the AA community.
Thanks for sharing about how you are not interested though, even while in an AA forum=D

More funny to know is that the same person probably is very hyped for this game on his other account. He probably posted a excited opinion as well in this very same topic Look at his writing style and compare it to a few other accounts. For some reason i get the feeling with some people here that they are one and the same person, especially in how their sentences are build up and some grammar issues (not that mine is perfect, far from it but they make the same mistakes).
Anyway AA is one of those games for me where i have a "wait and see" policy. I was excited to hear about it a few years ago. Then it suddenly gone dark again. There was some news about a english website and that was about the only news AA gave us years ago. Nothing much was on the site and that was it. Here on MMORPG i sometimes heard things trough the forums and i believe with the last E3 or some other big game convention i saw a extended gameplay movie with the devs showing off.
What worries me is that i might fall for the hype train to much. I mean the hype train i create myself. I did the same darn thing with Mortal Online. I read Sandbox, i read what is possible and i start to imagine how cool it would be. Getting all excited. Mortal Online came out and i never ever seen a more confusing game in my life before. I mean i get it, its not a hand holding game, but would it have been so bad to help new players a bit on their way? Especially when you start in the middle of the night and your screen is just pitch black so you have no idea where you are, and can't see a darn thing. All my expectations where gone. All the fantasies and visions i had where not met when i trying to play that game.
Doesn't mean its a bad game though, just for me it was not what i hoped it would be. And i fear the same with AA. I heard some concerning things. Like a cashshop and the sandbox not really being sandbox. I don't know near enough about this game but if those things are true then i worry. So for me its a wait and see.
And maybe its just me being a little MMORPG tired. With that i mean i always hear a lot of promises from new IP's. And everytime i start those games i go like "But i seen and done this like 20 times before already....what is so innovating about this all? I'm still killing x of that and gather x of so in the same fashion as any other MMO.....what is so innovating about these quests? Oh i don't have to hand in...wauw..yeah that is totally changing everything....nooooot".
With that all said, i sure wouldn't mind getting surprissed in a pleasant way.
You know a game is good when someone goes out of their way, just to bad mouth it. Out of their way, meaning creating a new account just to post 1 time =D
So now, posting about a dislike for a game you've chosen to be a sycophantic fanboi for, on an MMO site made specifically to discuss said games, is "going out of your way"? That's a stretch. Speaking of stretches, by your amazing intellectual acumen, every game ever covered on this site is "good", because I have yet to see a single game that hasn't had a one post detractor on it.
"Steve got a phone today. He sure went out of his way to talk to me".....this is essentially what you just said, seeing as if someone wanted to participate in conversations on this site, they would need to at some point have a post count of 1.
I have been playing the Russian open beta for a few weeks. AA is amazing and will be worth the wait. It is seriously fun to be a pirate and a criminal.
Riviting information....REALLY......WGAF!!!??? This has to be the worst marketing plan I have EVER seen in ANY business venture. Why don't you devs just wait another 5 years, and you could bring it out as the world's first "retro" MMO.
next time, please go the extra mile and translate the country list from azbuka to latin for your readers. it helps your reputation, saves your readers time and also lowers the load on google ...
would be good to adopt that practice when original source is NOT English ....
I clicked on the link and Chrome automatically translated the page from Russian to English.
Considering that the list of countries might change in the future and providing a static/dated list could actually prove to be a hindrance (not to mention doubling the length of the article unnecessarily), I'd advise you to simply ditch your shitty browser or get a translation add-on.
