Can someone link me a decent cpu/mobo for this dead horse?

WrenderWrender Member Posts: 1,386

ok guys since my computer recently went south(I'm the guy that had the os constantly shutting off my computer just as it started to load windows...

Anyways I have 2 cases an old  SR1950NX Compac Presario media center edition 2001 and the old dead horse case Gateway GM5472.

I'm good on power supplies

Wondering if my copy of windows 7 which I was barely able to install on the "dead horse" I actually made it to the desktop a couple of times after installing before compute shut off only for like maybe 20 seconds. Will it still boot up a new motherboard and processor?

And that's what I need a new mobo and processor.

Something for mmo gaming . Aion and TESO maybe TERA and games along those graphic requirements.

I can't really spend a lot of money right now but I can't stand being without any gaming whatsoever so I need something around 150-200m dollars perhaps.

Can any of you techie wizards here point me in the right direction? Would be much appreciated!

Here is something that will work well for less than $200

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130722

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113287

    = $167

Without knowing what case your using or rather what the case will hold I chose a Micro atx mobo which should fit in whatever case you are reusing.

Plus as you get more money and can replace the GPU in particular this cpu & mobo will make a capable gaming machine on a budget.

Thanks JD I am considering all options.

Do you think my OEM windows 7 will still be usable for the new system?

You should probably get a new case too.

    Here's mine I got from CyberPower : APEVIA Cruiser X - 3

And yes the OEM will be fine to use on your new rig yo'.

Just make sure you have the numbers(product code) for windows 7.

We already replied to your earlier post with 200$ builds that would put your current system to shame.

Your OEM Win 7 should be okay if it never authenticated with Microsoft.  If it did you may still be able to use it but will probably have to convince a live person via chat or phone that your system died and you are replacing the motherboard.

Since those cases are from manufactured systems you need to be sure they did not use proprietary motherboard layouts. Hazarding a guess the Gateway probably uses the standard ATX and/or mATX (micro ATX) standoff screw locations. The backplate that surrounds all of the ports must also be removable so you can install the one that comes with the new motherboard. Again the Gateway is most likely to meet this.

Any motherboard/cpu setup you get will also need to be compatible with the RAM type, speed and size you have or you will also need to get more RAM.

Below is an image showing the standard mATX / ATX standoff screw hole locations.  Those measurements in millimeters probably round off better in inches and fractions.

If your standoff layout matches then any motherboard advertised as ATX or mATX compliant will fit.

Note. Not all of the screw holes actually need to be in the motherboard but the ones that do need to line up with these dimensions. Where it says back plate is the back side of the motherboard and box.

These are examples of back plates taken from wikipedia.  The second and third row show back plates that meet current standard sizes and attachment method

Need some more info to help you:

    1.  What type of RAM do you have, not all RAM is compatible with all motherboards

    2.  I'm too lazy to look up those cases, can they can handle an ATX or mATX mobo?

    3. What kind of slots do you want the motherboard to have? (i.e. PCI express 3.0, etc.)

Yes the copy of windows 7 will still work. Worst case scenario you have to activate it over the phone. Just tell them what happened if it comes to that and it wont be an issue.

And take a look at what was linked in your old thread. I had a cpu/mobo/ram/case all linked for around $200. The case is out of stock now but the other components are there and will be less than $200 for cpu / mobo / ram

Yes JD I realize you linked me some goods for under $200 but you definetly outdone yourself with this link as I will def be ordering the viseria processor ...sweet thank you sooo much. The other processor seems to run way to hot. And this seems like a better deal for the money, thanks again JD you rock!

Ok the MSI motherboard is out of stock? omg what is one to do?
  • jdnewelljdnewell Member UncommonPosts: 2,237

    Couple of options.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130657

    or

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131942

Note the Asus mobo has usb 3.0 and the MSI one does not. Both will work with that cpu.

    Or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131795  After the rebate this one is around $40. Not bad for an Asus board on a budget
