It isn't the Hero engine, it is just a heavily modified version of the Hero engine, whooopeee.
/SIGH! Everyone gets blinded by the HERO Engine logo that they completely missed the big fat HAVOK logo right after? 0.o
Havok is a physics engine... one that will get put into World of Tanks soon if I am not mistaken... my turn now -sigh-
Which they use together with their inhouse Creation Engine.
But even if they use the Hero Engine now, you can already see how impressive it has become. It runs a hell lot better than SW:TOR.
The Graphics blow SW:TOR out of the water and the framerates (overall performance) are also much better.
PS. HAVOK is no longer just a Physics Engine. They are much much more than that these days. Just have a look at their website.
They have a game engine using Havok in development (Vision I think it was called) but Havok itself is still only used to model physics in a game engine. That said I never hinted that the Hero Engine being used is a bad thing, I am personally waiting for The Repopulation which used Hero Engine 2.0 if I am not mistaken and I believe Gloria Victis also uses the Hero Engine, merely that they lied through their teeth when they said it is a purpose built engine by them and them alone when in fact they built off the Hero Engine in one form or another and then integrated Havok into it. It doesn't make either engine shit but it does cast the developers in a very different light, get it?

Havok also have a game engine called the vision engine.
They also do the physics plug in as you mentioned for other engines.
Exactly what I said above but a Havok logo in the splash screen implies the physics engine not the Vision engine so the fact the developers of Havok also have a game engine is moot at the current time and I rather doubt they wouldn't be trumpeting it in the streets as I've not yet seen any game made with the Vision engine.

I have to step in and say not so fast because while what you say is true it could be misunderstood. SWTOR had choreographed combat which made for realistic animations while fighting, something TESO stinks at. That accounts for many frames lost.
SWTOR --> Awesome Combat Animations --> Lousy mass PVP
TESO --> Lousy Combat Animations --> Awesome mass PVP
A trade off, while SWTOR has it's issues, I'd only hope that SWTOR combat becomes more of a baseline for future MMORPG's .. higher framerates of course! But if you played SWTOR you'd know what I mean.
Have you bothered to have a look on HAVOK´s website?
They are way beyond simply a Physics Engine toolset these days.
Bethesda used the HAVOK Behavior toolset (AI Engine) for Skyrim as one example.
HAVOK is huge now with lots of different toolsets. They also have a fully fledged game engine now.
Stop trying to divert attention from the point. Havok is not a game engine like Hero is so its presence in the splash screen does not in any way prove they didn't use Hero engine as a basis for their "custom purpose built" engine. Kindly drop it because I am aware how much of a toolset it is but its engine is called Vision, is Havok Vision in the splash screen? No? Then drop it because you aren't arguing a point valid to the discussion.

The point I tried to make is, that we simply do not know what Zenimax uses from HAVOK.
It´s the general logo and that´s it! It can be just physics toolset or it can be more than one. We do not know!
The Hero Engine logo doesn´t mean anything either. We know they used it in the design phase. We do not know if they use it now in the final game!
One thing is for sure. The Wikia page says "Custom". If they used Hero Engine for the final game, it would have showed up there.
So the first indications are, that they used their inhouse engine for the final Product.
PS. And what others already said. I could care less what they used. The game runs smooth and looks beautiful! It´s all that matters in the end.
I think it pretty much negates every complaint people may have about the game's engine...it's beautiful and runs smooth (= well optimized) what else do people need?
There are plenty of awful games that use modified Unreal engine too.
Just because TOR had a lot of problems with Hero engine doesn't mean all games that use Hero engine (or pieces of it) are destined to have the same problems.
Lesson in causality.
People like to point fingers and say "See! This is why, right here!"
Because simple explainations to complex problems are easy for us to digest.
Easy for us to rally behind and pontificate against.
Logic and Reason have no place in ESO threads here. You should know better.

SWTOR is beautiful and smooth too, just not when a bunch of other people are nearby. TESO still has bad combat animations, whereas SWTOR uses choreographed combat to synchronize every attack, blow by blow, dodge by dodge.
What more do people need? A hero variant that mixes SWTOR and TESO to make a beast of an MMORPG. Might need a 2nd engine too since I'd like chat bubbles. 3rd engine for a seemless world.
EA should just buy out ZOS .. Muhahaha =D Then we can have Elder Scrolls 6 deved by Bethesda, Published by Electronic Arts. That'd be a sight to see. (OK not really .. but for a fleeting moment feel the pain BioWare fans had)
The good news is that there is room to grow, and TESO is just being born. Maybe ZOS will have better luck changing Hero code than EA did.
TESO managed to deliver often a good landscape with nice textures. I often dislike the outdoor lighting - indoor it is quite good. Armor sadly looks very cheap and is far from being good quality - its not even F2P Quality in many cases, the "Painted Skin Effect" does not deliver. Some of the Cloud effects look very cheap. There is no diving - why can 10 year old and older games offer underwater adventures and modern games can not?
Nevertheless TESO looks pretty TES style and the bulky malformed WoW style is pretty hidden and only comes to daylight (so far i have played yet) a few times so at all i am quite confident that the visuals will not hamper my gameplay experience to much.
They managed to make the engine work well enough so far.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"

sorry... that didnt quite express my emotion here.. let's try it again: ROFEEEEEL!

1) Take a Xanax because no one is killing the game here but we are critiquing the developers and their outright lie to the community (btw SWtOR did something similar to ESO in almost every aspect except develop its own engine and it still took how many years? and how big of a budget? not saying the game is bad but you need to face the fact that something is fishy about the development cycle and if everything went as know and they did scratch build their own engine for this game then the budget is bigger than TOR which in turn means, by the lack of bragging by zeni, that they are having difficulties recouping their investment).
2) Considering you didn't say MMO underwater experience: DayZ, MMO experience: Archeage.

LOL! Are you serious? You don't need to spend SWTOR kind of Budget to create your own engine.
We don't know what they did. They could have just as well continue using the Hero Engine and kept it "rightfully" under the wraps, because of all the raging against Hero Engine by all those ignorant fools on the internet!
They could also just as well used Bethesda's inhouse engine and expand on that. We just don't know.
As People just look for every little thing to nitpick and rage over, I cannot blame Zenimax to keep their mouth shut!
SW:TOR was just crazy. They wasted so much Money on all the Voice over work and get it all integrated into the game.
Mind you, The Secret World is 100% voice over as well and I am pretty sure Funcom did not have $ 200+ million to spend on that game. More likely only a 10th fraction of what EA / Bioware spend on SWTOR.
No one is going to spend that kind of Money anymore on game Development, as EA did.

Actually you do need that kind of budget to build a new engine for your game because it takes time to get it done right first before starting actual game development.
They could rightfully have remained silent on the whole issue for whatever reason however they did not and said outright that they have not used the Hero engine for their game while currently most people say they at least built off of it which is where my issue with the situation comes from ( if they didn't wanna say what engine they are using ok, fine, perfect but don't lie about something that crucial to your game even if it doesn't really change jack shit it still tells people you, as a developer, are willing to lie to be more in line with "popular" opinion, opinion which btw will flip 180 once Repopulation and Gloria Victis hit release).
The reason the wiki lists the engine is custom is sourced in the wiki, it's the same article you already linked, you can't use the same source twice and act like it validates your view point further.
All of you are at each others throats. Who cares if it's Hero or not?
