I have to upgrade an AMD rig but I haven't been CPU hunting in years. I really want to upgrade my girlfriend's CPU but am not allowed to buy a new motherboard :U So, technically I need a good gaming CPU for AM3+ socket. She and I mostly play Guild Wars 2 and we all know that in WvW the game scales terribad due to the single threaded renderer. So if there is any AMD gamer out there, please do share your CPU model and average FPS in games. Of course I'm talking about 1080p gaming.
I would love it if we can juice out at least 30fps in graphic intensive games.
P.S: We recently bought a Radeon HD 7850 GPU, so I don't think we'll be relying on any integrated GPU/APU.

AM3+ aint that bad ^^
Im using the 8150 eightcore but that mostly because my Linux is flying with it ^^
I think a lot depends on your budget.
What RAMs are you using on what mainboard ?
Everything except the CPU is decent IMO.
The RAM is 4GB DDR3 1600MHz dual channel kit which is more than enough for any 32-bit application, especially Gw2, which this computer is mostly used for.
The GPU as I said is decent. The motherboard supports memory modules up to 2400MHz @ 1.5V. It's also CrossfireX-ready.
The hard drive is your usual 7200 rpm 8mb cache HDD *put a brand name here, but ultimately they're all the same*
The FX8350 performs well and is Sub 200$.
If it has to be cheaper a lesser 8320 or the 6-Core 6350 or 6300.
But if you already have a >3GHz CPU you want to take the 8350 bcs the difference would not be enough to justify a slower CPU.

And what about higher class AMD CPUs? I'm not really sure where we'll draw the line. We want a good CPU with a good price. I'll check out that 8350 right away, thanks!
EDIT: Just saw that its a bit slower than i5-2500k CPU which is my cpu and I barely go over 30 FPS when the shit hits the fan :U
FPS depend on the game, i do play TESO atm but not GW2 - TESO runs very smooth but i have no FPS.
Mechwarrior Online with the Crysis 3 engine runs at 1920x1200 + highest settings 40 to 150 FPS with an average >50 FPS - i have a R9 280X GPU (pretty similar to the 7970 GHz Edition).
The CPU can deliver!
Imho any CPU close to 4GHz should perform very well with GW2 if you have a decent GPU.

The only thing that scares me about AMD is that they have poor single-core performance but are beasts at multi-threaded apps and saddly Gw2's DirectX 9 renderer is not multi-threaded
Guess I'll dig deeper in reviews about this one, CPUBoss claims its a jewel to have, some 125W one xD
I was using a 1090T for years and was getting relatively the same frames as what others were getting with a 280x. imo i dont think you would yeild alot more frames upgrading your cpu as long as its with in 1-2 years.
That said, i hear the 8k series is good performance for price.

This.
But cheapest option is FX-6300, some 120mm fan cooler (Zalman/Thermltake/Coolermaster/Scythe/Noctua......) and overclock it to 4400 GHz.
Same deal with FX-8320, just 8 cores and more expencive (if you need 2 extra cores for something)
This^^^^^^
+1
I have the 8320 eight core 3.5 and I blaze fast speeds.
Athlon 2 X2 2xx currently (not sure about the last 2 digits). I'm certain that anything newer would yield a better FPS but still as a new purchase I would like to at least match my i5-2500k speed, which by now is about 3 and a half years old 32nm CPU. I bought it when it was brand new and even now it helps me run Bf4 at ULTRA setting (thanks to my R9 290X too), but my girlfriend is a different person than me. I'm all about high fps and good graphics, while she just wants to play and 5-6 fps at wvw is not acceptable by anyone's standard. Also she considers money on PC components a waste so I really can't get her decent Intel CPU+Mobo :U
The FX8350 should be faster and it can feed the fastest GPUs very well - a 7850 or R9 280x will still Limit this CPU in any decent GPU optimized game.

The CPU will be good for the next 10 years.

Exactly what motherboard do you have? Athlon II chips released about two years before Socket AM3+, which itself released well before the chips you'd look at buying today, so you really need to make sure that you have a motherboard that can take the processor you're looking at.
If you do have a suitable motherboard, you could get an FX-6300 (six cores, turbo to 4.1 GHz) as a decent budget option or an FX-8350 (eight cores, turbo to 4.2 GHz) as the highest end option available today. AMD will launch some chips at some point this year that will probably nudge those clock speeds upward by about 200 MHz or so (they've announced them for servers), though they'll probably be more expensive initially. I'd expect those chips to be the last Socket AM3+ CPUs to ever launch, as the coming transition to DDR4 memory will mean a new socket.
