I was hesitant about this game...but then I read some decent reviews and got a coupon to make it 48 bucks. Seeing as though I don't have much else to play right now..I decided to give ESO a whirl.
I played for 3 hours this afternoon (before having the game crash)....and I think I've made a big mistake. So far I would have to call this one of the most boring MMO's ive ever played. The combat is flat out TERRIBLE. I'm playing a nightblade, and have tried both melee and ranged....both are equally bad. There is just no "feel". Combat is really clunky...you don't feel like you are actually hitting anything....and its nothing but the same old "hit 1, 2, or 3 until something dies type of bore fest.
I was not expecting something super ground breaking...but this is just a huge disappointment.
For those that have been playing all week....does it get better? Am I missing something? Do I just need to level up more to get more interesting skills? Should a try a particular class/style that can make the combat bearable?
Someone please convince me to log in again....or tell me how to get a refund!!

Try to reach lvl 10-12.
The game becomes more interesting after lvl 10
Although if the class is your problem try something else.
What can we tell you and "yes" you are probably missing something.
It's very possible this "isn't your game". If you read glowing reviews then did you find examples of you read in those reviews that hold up?
If someone says "combat is amazing' then that means nothing other than "they think combat is amazing".
Honestly I have no idea why you bought it. I can't say what brought you to buy it if you had reservations as I don't know what you like and don't know what those people said.
does it get better? sure! The stories in the quests get more interesting, you find more quests and places as you explore.
Does that make it better for you or does that make it more boring? Do you care about the stories and the characters or do you click through them?
Again, I couldn't say if the game will get better for you. I'm certainly enjoying myself more than I did in beta as I found the early quests a bit stale. Still, some interesting things in the main quest and suddenly the fighter's guild quest as well as the Aldmeri Dominion main quest gets a bit more meat. Same with your own quest regarding your escape from Cold Harbor.
But if the stories never grab you and the lore and the world doesn't grab you then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Youve made a mistake, this game isnt for you. The combat doesnt get more impactful around level ten, or twenty, or fifty.
Now if you call $50 is a big mistake, well then who am I to argue.
Question; Why didnt you try this game out in beta? They invited everyone at the end who applied.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
The idea that buying a game you may not like qualifies as a " Big Mistake " is shocking.
A big mistake is driving drunk or trying to get revenge by setting a fire.
Unless you are prepared to explain how spending money on a computer game is a " Big Mistake " you should rethink your life values.
If you wanted a refund prior to launch, it would have been much easier. The launch version essentially wasn't sold yet, so you could just back out.
You'll need to contact support either via phone or email to petition your request. Not sure how it will end up honestly, since the window for simple refunds closed.
Instead of an automated system, you'll need to actually interact with someone at ZOS. Good luck!

I would even say, depending on area, 15.
That's when I felt the quests had more interesting bits. At least those you find while exploring.
Then again, Iv'e seen people say "I'm level 20 and I've ran out of quests" where I was 23 and still finishing quests in the area. I think if people aren't ardent explorers the game might fall a bit flat for them.

I know what you're saying...I guess I mostly a VERY disappointed with the combat. I expected decent MMO combat...even if it was more of the same. So far I would have to rate ESO's combat as substantially worse than expected. When 90% of a game revolves around combat in one way or another...I just can't believe its this poor. I guess Im asking...does it get better. Will I notice a substantial difference in combat as I level up, or will it be the same thing with more damage being done? For someone that is not thrilled with the combat so far...what class should I try?? Will I like using magic more? I don't know..Im grasping at straws here.
The game looks pretty good. I havent seen much, but its pretty. The quests are very standard so far...but I expect they will get deeper/cooler.
I guess I am just really at a loss for words. Most mmo's...show SOMETHING in the first few hours that make me say "I will be logging in again soon"....I'm not feeling that with ESO.
I bought it because I havnt bought an MMO in quite a while. This one had a lot of hype. People have been anticipating it for years...so in a way I figured..."how bad can it be...it will entertain me for a month or two". As of right now, I don't know if it will entertain me for another hour or two.
Combat doesn't get better, it's very clunky and limited.
I know exactly what you mean when you attack something but it doesn't actually feel like you're hitting anything. Has really poor combat animations that I'm surprised made it this far. It's like the monster reacts to every attack 1 second too late and it seems to throw off the equilibrium of the game.
I had interesting quests right away. Stealing the bottle of wine. That was a cool little starter quest with multiple ways of solving the problem.
I am about to ding level 15 and I am having a blast. I love the no quest hubs. You have to go looking for trouble. Hunting skyshards, crafting ALL of the crafts and random people running up to you asking for help. I have so much to do that I am reluctant to move on to the next zone.

I get what you're saying. Maybe "big mistake" was an over statement...but when I spend 50 bucks on a game, I expect to get a few hours of entertainment out of it. It doesn't have to be the greatest game ever made...but when you are completely turned off within a couple of hours and are thinking "I don't know if I will ever play that again"...then it qualifies as a mistake.
Essentially, it's just throwing a 50$ bill in the trash. It's not life altering, but you are mad at yourself for making that "mistake".
Im going to try for a refund, but I doubt it will happen. I'm sure I will be stuck with the game, so I guess I'm wondering what I should try in my next go around to make the game more enjoyable?
Make a list of everything you like in your game. Make another list of everything you don't like. Be honest when you write, let it flow. Only you will see it (assuming you don't leave it lying around). Take a good look at what you wrote.
Everyones different. People can give you suggestions, but they have no idea what your tastes are.
My personal opinion would be to try games before you buy, or have a solid source of physical people to draw info from. There is so much misinformation and shilling / advertising abound that you just need to see something with your own eyes or a trusted friends eyes to know what is really decent. Hope that helps!

I feel similar and I have requested a refund after giving it careful thought. I realized it wasn't going to get magically better because this IS how the combat is and how the game is. It is what it is. Some people love it but I'm not one of them sadly.
It was a nice experience, met some nice people but was bored to tears, the phasing was disappointing and I guess overall, just super disappointing. I was hesitant too and regret my first instinct to NOT buy the game. Should have listened to myself lol.
Best wishes!!
Thanks for posting this man. I was on the fence about this also... same as you, not much to play, but from past experience, Elder scrolls games have the absolute worst combat ever, so I expected this game to follow suit. Like you, I have also only seen good reviews and ALMOST started thinking I should give this game a whirl.
So, thanks for saving me the purchase.
Thanks for the replies...and I guess I don't really know what I expected. I was hoping someone would say "I felt the same, then I tried _________ and it totally started clicking for me". It doesnt seem like thats the case. I think this one is just not for me.
Normally, I would just chalk it up as a loss, but I seriously had no interest in playing anymore within the first 3 hours. To me, that falls into the "deserving of a refund" column when talking about an MMO. Part of what you are paying for when you buy the game is 30 days of entertainment...when I don't even get 3 full hours out of it...I don't feel like Zenimax should get to keep my 50 bucks.
I checked with my bank, and since the charge was still pending, I was able to cancel the payment. Hopefully that solves the issue for me.
Best of luck to everyone enjoying the game.
try the other classes and other alliances before throwing it to the curb. Even if its outside your normal play style, you might as well and you might surprise yourself
It really doesn't, level 43 and the combat still feels as bad as it did in beta and pre-launch and always.
dont even try the other classes... regear the nightblade while low... use a resto staff and light gear, become a healer that can stealth to drop any aggro. put on heavy armor and a 1h and shield become a tank that can teleport in to the mobs... morph the teleport into the fan of knives version... do a destro staff and nuke and hide.
The combat may be "clunky" but honestly I have played worse, and the versatility is awesome. Add to that the non hand holding on questing and its a no brainer.
If you are looking for smooth realistic combat animations with NPC reactions to said combat then MMO's might not be for you. Could you imagine an NPC reacting to getting hit by 16 people at once. Or your char getting hit by 3 mobs at once... how do you even swing your weapon?
There is a lot of potential for this game, honestly I wish I could afford to get it right now. Unfortunately wont be able to for another month or so. (college tuition this month again plus this is my works slow season) game released about 4 months too late 8(
Combat is clunky. It's not up to snuff with a AAA subscription game? Should TESO be B2P / F2P? I don't want clunky combat, and I agree it's clunky .. particle effects galore can't help bad or lacking animations.
Combat is the core of themepark MMORPG's. When your not looking for quests, then you are fighting. If the combat is clunky, then that means 80-90% is unenjoyable. /sigh
Purple point: SWTOR did combat really well, despite other flaws, with choreographed combat. WoW had really good reactions to said combat (animations, solo or raid). I think telling people MMORPG's aren't for them doesn't suit your interests.

well you payed for 30 days of entertainment and you get 30 days worth, if you enjoy it or not is not really up to them but upto you, you can'y just go around wanting your money backon everything because it did not live up to your standards, as much as this would be good, you just can't.
I think you need to make up your own mind, why don't YOU log in and try other classes to see if they are better,
it amazes me why so many people come here asking for advice on stuff, it is YOUR money and YOUR time to invest in the game, why do you need someone else to make a decision for you??
Thats the word I see "chunky". Its not awful its just slow. It wouldnt bother me so much if I didnt know they were told 2012-2013 about the combat.
Yeah it does not get better. The only thing that makes me feel kind of good is I bought the box version. At least I have something. $60 for one month of play..nice huh. Got a nice little pet and white horse..
Or you could be like most and just RUN to all the nodes and chests haha. That will die fast when they find out nodes and chests are everywhere and there is no need. No Aution house other then guilds. I thought it would take me forever to get the books for crafting and that is so not true.
Not sure what to tell you. What you see now is what you see later on. Ooh then you get to go to the other starter zones and kill all over again.
Now my friend loves it. He can be a vamp and blah blah blah.. so I don't know there could be stuff in there I never new so ..keep asking keep looking.
Wow. You buy a product then feel entitled to a refund because you choose not to play it...then you go through your bank to cancel it...
It's funny everyone complains about how unethical and greedy businesses are these days yet they don't think twice about being a greedy and unethical consumer.
Is "i don't like this game" really a valid reason to seek a refund though?
@ OP As Sovarth pointed out we really can't tell you if it will get better for you.
I'd say if you don't like the game-play chances are slim.
