LoL and WoT are not MMOs... how did they get put into that catagory ?
Says who ? The industry seems to have decided they were a long time ago.
Well in that case counterstrike, battlefield games, cod games, team fortress are all MMOs and no longer just multiplayer games lol...

The first MMO you loved will always be the best. You will never get that feeling back stop trying.
Hahaha true
you got your MOBA in my MMO !

So? Even this site listed them as MMO. It is just common usage.
It is just a collection of games, following little logic. That is why WoT and LoL are MMOs, but not Madden nor farmville.
I don't think it is surprising. WoW is in clear decline, and LoL is growing. This will happen sooner or later.
I don't think traditional MMORPGs have much life left. But we shall see.
You, apparently, are not paying attention.
Here are some examples of people using MMO to describe WoT.

I would much rather listen to a consensus of reviewers, than random dudes on the internet like yourself.
wanna know why they don't have alot of life left?
Because people like YOU want them to turn into single players games. and so they did and now they are all bunhes of crap. There is nothing special anymore wich sets an MMO to be a diffrent genre. So thanks for destroying the industry. and dumbass devs who think there was any money there.
This post shows you exactly how big the revenue stream is from MMOs and Online games.
Its HUGE!!!

I think somewhere along the line, the Term MMO has been used interchangeably with the term MOG.
Both WoW and LOL are MOGs, but there is nothing "Massively" about 5-10 people in an instance.
But you can argue that there are tens of thousands if not hundreds logged into the game at any given time. So then how important is it for the title MMO that all these online players be able to interact with each other in the same world?
While Kyleran is using a touch of hyperbole to add a bit of humor to the thread, I don't think he's too far off. Sooner or later someone's gonna say, "I saw them selling it on Ebay, therefore the game is "online".
(And yes, that too is hyperbole...........or is it?)
Edit:
Of course there is also something to be said about WoW evolving into a Massively Single Player Online Game that you can wave hello to Massive number of other players playing thier Massively Single Player Online Game at the same time.
So, why not? Let's lump them all together then. What does it matter anyway? Since hardly 2 players in the MMORPG genre can agree on what kind of game it should be in the 1st place.
Actually they do. And you hear it every time there is a panel, industry discussion, or presentation regarding MMOs and their future. For years devs have been talking about how 'more games are becoming MMOs'. And they're right. What some of us (randoms on a forum) want MMOs to be, the truth is their definition is extremely dated. Massively, Multiplayer, Online is what MMO stands for. Most of these games are massively multiplayer, and they are online.
This whole concept of 'persistance' is a sandbox fanboy's notion. Older MMOs did have a lot more persistance, but they were also much simpler games. They had less stressful graphics, and less complex quest mechanics. Today, by that same criteria, there wouldn't be any MMOs (for years now), because nearly all of them are instanced in some way or another. And not persistant. It's a flawed definition that doesn't hold weight anymore.
Like other devs have stated in the past. MMO has become more of a technology than a genre. We've just gotten used to thinking of it as a genre when it's not. There are MMO shooters, MMO racing, MMO CCGs , MMO social games, etc. etc. etc. The MMO aspect hasn't defined the genre for some time now. There is way more diversity now than there ever was. Once you stop assuming that every MMO needs to play like they did 15 years ago.
nah .. you get it backwards.
I already have single player games. I don't need MMOs to turn into SP games. The devs want to cater to me .. and make MMOs more like SP games.
I am just giving them a chance by not ignoring their efforts. If a MMO turns into a fun (to me) SP games, i have no reason not to play it.
And "dumbass devs who think there was any money there"?

The current MMO market (p2p + f2P) is like $10B .. so who is the dumb ass here?
He can keep sticking his head in the sand, and people will keep calling WoT (and similar games) MMO.
There is really nothing he can do about that.
I disagree. The Term MMO wasn't intended to imply in game instance size. It was to encompass the mass of the server or World. WoW has between 3000-5000 players on any given server at a time. Where as LoL or DotA have a handful on a given server/Match thus that would be a MoG.

In a roundabout way, this actually makes my point.
This is why we just call them MMOs now.
The term MMO is not intended for anything. It is just a common label for a group of games, and because of convenience, the industry has been broadening its use.
You can post as many times on forum stating that WoT should be a MoG .. and everyone else will still call it a MMO.
I refuse to take any data seriously if the researcher(s) don't even know what an MMO is. If they can't distinguish the difference between a 10 player game and one with a massive amount of people in it, what else are they struggling with?
By definition the term MMO is intended to distinguish a category of games from others. For instance, we have co-op, single player, multiplayer, and massively-multiplayer. I hope that helps set things straight for you
