I’m faced with a dilemma. No, it’s not whether to donate money to end world hunger or buy Girl Scout cookies, but it is still a dilemma nonetheless. For the first time that I can remember I have access to two MMORPGs that I don’t want to put down. This may sound crazy but it has really never happened to me before now. In the past I have always lost interest in one MMO before I became interested in another. While it is true that I log into Neverwinter on a daily basis to pray and collect my Ardent Coins so I can one day buy the Angel that costs 360 coins and once I achieve that goal I’ll probably never log in again. At this point I honestly don’t know why I even bother other than the fact I have about 300 of the stupid things already and, hey, I might as well right? What it reduces down to is I’m a serial monogamist when it comes to MMORPGs. Or at least I was.

Heh, me too. I used to be a one MMO type guy, usually swapping between EQ and DAoC based off my current interest of PvP or PvE. The past few years I have transformed into someone that tries to play 3-5 games at a time, even though I have a family now and much less time to play. Kind of backwards, I am

Has always been my dilemma since SWG was screwed up. There was WoW for a long while, but there was this constant search for something else (due to SWG I guess). LOTRO came and went, DDO, and many others. If and when I was in two MMOs, I do know though, that it just isn't possible if you have a full-time job and/or family to take care of, you just have to decide on one.
Even an MMO and a second single player game combo can be tough time-wise under above circumstances

I have the same problem. There are many games I want to play but I'm spread so thin with RL matters these days, I'm lucky to get to play the ones I'm interested in even 1-2 hours each week.

That is where I am at with Neverwinter.
But I might actually resume playing if they release Warlocks.

MMO Monogamy, I feel, mostly existed because of sub fees and lack of availability of online games. Even though many of us can, and do, pay for multiple subscriptions, I've felt that I was essentially wasting money paying for more than one mmo account. Even if you're playing more than one game, you're bound to play the one that interests you most at the time more, especially when it comes to mmos.
Now that many mmos are shifting away from subs, player loyalty only goes far. Especially since many mmos don't do all things very well. You may PvE in one game and PvP in another now. Hell, you might only Raid in one game, while doing more exploration PvE in another game as well.
Additionally, nearly every game has some form of multiplayer and/or online experience. The definition of the traditional mmo has become very blurred due to the nature of gaming becoming more social. Long gone are the days when you'd play one of very few mmorpgs because it was the only social way to play online games.
I feel mmos are going to become more focused in the future, because developers/publishers are going to realize how much the general gaming audience bounces around now. They'll also need to focus so they can do what they want their game to do very well. We're becoming less forgiving with each new buggy release. MMOs are retaining less and less if they aren't a quality product.
We've seen a shift already with games becoming more sandbox in nature, and developers expecting the players to create the content to a degree. This is a trend that's going to keep on as the audience grows, and shifts, constantly.
polyamory is the future. we're all ready living in a world of serial monogamies.
as for videogames you are a stronger soul than i to have waited this long to break the 'only one game' myth.
"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

Except in real life :-), I was never monogamist, but was looking always for good alternatives. If you do not try, you can never know if you discovered best game (or other thing) ever.
So far all my gaming needs are covered by Wow and Swtor. Sometimes also Gw2.
About ESO will unfortunately never know as it uses terribly outdated WASD system instead of mouse + top row of numeric keys for executing abilities. Will never ever force myself to play with WASD for any reason again, to much torture.
i run between WoT/Hawken/GW2 and modding on ROME II .. these game are so many, that i dont have time for anything else ..! although i dont have a normal job but only a part time ...
2 of these are strict multiplay, one is close to a MMORPG and ROME II has some aspects of multiplay but you can play it offline .. i just wait a good mmorpg without all these number and read of EVE
Perhaps this is due to the major design choices among most MMO(RPG)'s.
In a Virtual 'WORLD' my avatar can live there. In a THEME PARK my avatar is a guest who rides the rides like at Cedar Point. The same rides everyone else rides. The same turns, twists and guided rails that leads to the same outcome...Every...Time. Everyone "Wins" and everyone is the "Hero" (and savior of the World) and its tiresome.
The theme park closes- The Virtual World goes on...
I have been MMO jumping for years now and found nothing WORTH playing for more than a few months. Give me an updated UO or SWG and I am back to sticking with one.
Hell, I barely play MMORPGs anymore since they generally suck. When I do- It dosent last. BUT I fired up a private server for SWGEMU (not going to list the server- worry not) and have had over six months of great fun on an emu that only has maybe 1/4 of the complete game... Once it launches in full I imagine that will be where I reside unless another "world" comes along (unlikely)

This was actually a refreshing article to read because it sounded like a true gamer with passion for the industry.Of course we all rant from time to time,it is because care,we want better games to play and for some we want it now not later.Thing is and i have been there,as a teenager we are impatient and just want to game,we did not use common sense to not support rushed or bad products,we instead bought EVERY new game that came out.
I am however at the point where i no longer will support anything i don't consider worthy,i don't need gaming that bad.
I was looking forward to AA since long ago but a few things sort of turned me away or have me only mildly interested.I am not a fan of their class design/system,nor pvp and i really detest any kind of hand holding markers,be it over npc heads or arrows or anything else like those quest numbers on the ground.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I'm not really an MMO gamer at heart, so it's easy for me to pick one and stay with it. FFXI got me into the genre because it was an FF game. From there I played WoW for a bit (I played the older Warcraft games and it was easy for me to get into) and am now playing FFXIV.
I think it's hard for me to get into a game without an established IP. (never was all that interested in Star Wars/Star Trek so those MMOs didn't really pique my interest)
The rest of you are just tourists to the genre and likely play single player games.
