So many reviews echo what I initially said about this game in beta.
It tries to be both an SPRPG with story and choices, as well as an MMORPG with a persistent world. And it constantly keeps "getting in its own way" as Kevin VanOrd said.
The SP portion is diminished because you are supposed to be the "chosen one" but you see a plethora of other players running around doing the same chosen one things as you. The MP portion is diminished because in the game's attempts to differentiate your world with phasing, it makes it so you can't even group with friends in a very large portion of the open PvE world.
SWTOR had similar issues in my mind, and this is why you shouldn't try to combine a traditional SPRPG with a focus on story with an MMORPG.
SWToR did what ESO failed at. My wife and I teamed for every bit of the content. From quest, personal story to dungeons. Most team friendly MMO to come out over the past few years.

You should, because compared to TESO and every other MMO released, besides WoW, CoD and NBA2K franchises have dozens of millions of players around the globe. TESO has what? a 2-3 million and is still in the free month phase if I'm not mistaken. So to all those who bought the game and wasted their money, just admit it, ya'll fell for the hype and the game blows.
TESO is getting crappy scores around the board because of first impressions, which is the most important aspect when it comes to a MMO, people don't want to pay 50-60$ on a MMO that is still in pre beta phases (I'm looking at you FF14), and by the time the game is 100% completed, most people who have waited have moved on to something else.
Having been Bethesda, and I've been saying this for over a year now,I would of just released a expansion on Skyrim for multi player function, which by the way would of broken Skyrim sales record blindfolded, with new maps and from there work on a secret MMO project for a few years. Numbers never lie, you got more people still playing Skyrim then TESO, and that number will triple once TESO free month phase is over.
Let me guess - you haven't played the game and are just reading from the hate parade cue cards, right? I'm seeing the same handful of posters promoting this review who have been lingering in this forum giving cheap shots for weeks. Look over the OP posting history here, for example, if you want a representative example...
What does the OP's posting history have to do with the review they linked?
Another website reviewed ESO. Someone posted a link to that review on the ESO forums here.
It doesn't matter who posted it. The review stands on its own. That you don't like the review doesn't change that.
Again, it's just amazing the ridiculous things some of you people will say in defense of someone criticizing "your game".
There is a long list of reviews, and people like the OP only select and promote the most hostile ones. This is flat-out propaganda - making it appear as if there is a consensus (as in the text of his "post") by selective presentation of the evidence. If someone else posted the MMORPG or IGN review and claimed that they spoke for some universal consensus they'd be doing the same thing - but notice that it only seems to be the detractors who play this game. In this very thread there is another poster accusing the author of a positive review of being paid off.
There really is a dedicated cohort of posters who don't play the game, hate it, and gather every single negative thing that they can find and throw it at people who do enjoy the game. That's really messed up.
So stopping by a website and sharing some information I found concerning a topic here is not to your liking? Sorry bud, but there is no duplicity here, the review seemed fresh and I thought it might concern the community. As such I posted it here so the community could share in the information/discussion. I'm being accused of sharing information not to your liking, that's your argument? The consensus is consistent with the current reviews released in the past few days as I have mentioned. The community is free to discuss it as they please but you offer nothing of value.
No the only select and one sided view here is yours, you are blind to anything that resembles thoughtful and constructive criticism. You attack everything and anything that you deem is unacceptable to the reputation of ESO.
The only information that you share is hostile criticism. Note that I created a separate thread documenting what the average is - as opposed to selectively pulling out the most critical reviews for "discussion". Look, you don't like this game, which is your right. I do. There is a pattern in this forum where critics will post a stream of negative issues about the game without any counterbalancing discussion of postiives. Noticing this doesn't make me "blind". In fact, you'll see that I clearly noted that the game has mixed reviews - rather than linking only to ones that put a positive spin on things.
But on looking over your history, I have to ask: what is your motive? You clearly detest this game. What do you want instead? There are plenty of games that I don't like and I don't spend my time promoting their flaws on discussions forums about them.

This is true, I had my problems with SWTOR, but I will admit that it didn't royally F up with the phasing crap like ESO did.

I have to agree I play with my gf. She loves how it plays. Its also one of the only games she will play on her own. She doesnt liked getting killed in games and im always on a PVP server. Shes not the greatest player but she does pretty well in SWTOR.

Having lots of players doesnt make a game "good". Just accessible. McDonalds also has millions of customers, yet their food is mostly shit. But it used to be cheap and convenient, and is what people have gotten used to. It doesn't mean there isnt much much better out there. Now their prices are just as high as some of the higher quality places, yet they still have millions of customers. It's all familiarity / comfort.
There have been several shooters that are better than CoD (especially the last few releases of it), but CoD is what theyve gotten used to over the years. Anything "different" tends to be shunned by the masses and the familiar keeps getting a 9/10 every time.

And this is exactly why ESO is going to get a very harsh receiving, more so than normal. TES has a huge following and people wanted a sequel to Skyrim not a watered down MMO. ESO could sill be a very good MMO and still receive less than accurate scoring because of the IP that was used. I didn't buy the game, played a beta, but walked away wanting a sequel to TES series not some MMO bastardization.
Not saying the game is great or anything, but I'd say its getting more harsh reviews than other games. This score is prolly more accurate than any scoring in decades where sites were scoring mediocere games at best with 8s or 9s like SWTOR or Rift when their scoring should have been more on par with ESO.
Also I guarantee that these reviewers are playing WS beta and sure that is biasing their scoring, however subconscious it might be. Don't care for WildStar but it does have a lot of features that are found lacking in ESO I imagine.
MMO gamers are also remarkably conservative. A lot of players have really internalized MMO conventions, and some of the most persistent complaints on the official boards are that a comfortable and familiar feature is missing. Another is the prejudice that everything below level cap is garbage to be suffered through to get to the real game. This genre has developed some genuinely odd expectations for players. Wildstar reads as if someone took all of the features of WoW, created a checklist, and made sure that they clicked all of the boxes. This definitely appeals to some, but it's a pretty cramped vision of the possible.
I disagree strongly on the "co-op Skyrim is what the people wanted" theme. To be blunt, most MMOs have a heavy single-player ingredient because single-player games are popular. A MMO provides a social environment that is a bonus, but designers are not emphasizing all of the solo content in them because they hate group things. They're doing it because purely group content is actually not terribly popular.
Originally posted by cmorris975 Good review. It highlights the main flaw of the game for me, the constant quest grind where you are playing through a pre-made story and not making your own.
The review put some stress on this and he is obviously a TES fan who loved Skyrim. Other than being a serial killer with kleptomania you can't make your own story in the Elder Scrolls games(unless you're a roleplayer that just makes up stuff in your head, but you can do that in any game).
They have a set story quest chain that gives you a direction to go at the beginning. From there you wander around doing the quests as you find them. The quests don't actually change from person to person. On paper ESO does exactly what TES games do, but it's not really possible to capture that feeling in a themepark MMO.
Personally, I think if they wanted to make an mmo from one of their IPs they should have used Fallout.
I have somehow managed to group 95% of the time with friends in PvE and 100% of the time in Cyrodill.
Ok, stepping away so the nerds can get back to arguing about Dungeon and Dragon toy games and how the ESO toy video game has slighted them personally and ruined their life.

Thank you for the heads up. Had I not seen this thread I might have actually play the game that got a 6/10 score from a proffesional reviewer. How stiupid would that be... Now, exuse me, while I uninstall this obviously crap game and promise to never play any game, that is not rated at least 8.5/10, by proffesional reviewers.
Taking all of the polls together this game is probably right around a 6 and I think that's pretty much where it belongs. It will interest some people but it just doesn't have what it takes in its current form to make a serious impact on the market. is that acceptable for a title like this? I guess that's up to you to decide. Personally I'm disappointed they didn't try to hit one out of the park but they chose to play it safe and they got a middle of the road game with middle of the road reviews and middle of the road sales.
For the ones that are just having a good time with the game for what it is, no review is going to change that. (<-- Note this doesn't = fanboy no matter how much the haters try to tell you otherwise)
For those that are heavily influenced by a review, I guess this is the target audience for such articles....

Strange, all I can assume is that scores like this come from non pvprs.
edit - Just read it. Yep pve guy here. "you can't limit a group search to your own campaign is a drag" lmao. All you do is type LFG you have a group of 20+ in a couple minutes if not instant.
This game's PvP is mediocre at best. Pointless of flipping keeps back and forth and no penalty on death. Doubt that would score high for many.

Well reviews are quiete personally, this author did review RIFT with a rating of 8.
When ESO gets a rating of 6 I would review RIFT with a 3, since Rift could not hold me at all.

GS gave ESO a 5/10. Can you imagine how bad this game must be if COD had a 9!
But that is of course my opinion

You got to be kidding me, the same reviewer named Kevin VanOrd from Gamespot did test SWTOR aswell.
The rating for SWTOR was a "great" 8/10 in 2012, you can see it at the end of the review video.
So much about the value of such reviews......they are just bogus. Only yourself can decide if you like a game not others for you.
