FFA-PvP: When is ENOUGH going to be ENOUGH?

MMOExposedMMOExposed Member RarePosts: 7,400

Seeing once again, another discussion on an interesting game regarding its interest level dropping due to the announcement of FFA-PvP gameplay,

and how people in support of FFA-PvP argue against any critical view points of the mechanics.

I have to wonder. When will enough be enough in these new MMOs, especially the "Sandbox" & "Indie" MMOs that tend to have interesting ideas?

Me personally, I am tired of FFA-PvP being linked to every interesting sandbox MMO that gets announced and forced on people who arent interesting in that sort of thing.

Honestly, I enjoy PvP, but Never been a fan of FFA-PvP. Always been a fan of Faction PvP if any. I would even take that in a new sandbox MMO rather than having FFA-PvP at all.

Another thing I simply never understood, is why people are so against Sandbox MMOs simply splitting the game into two separate servers of FFA-PvP and Optional Flagging PvP servers? What harm does that do? Both sides get what they want, and can play with people that like what they like as well.

Whats the problem?

It will never end. A true ffa pvp game will never be big budget or a huge success. With out that there will always be people who don't bother because they want to be part of the IT game and wont waste their time in a dying game.

It's now just become a circle of waiting for a game that will never come but arguing that it will be huge if it's done right.

Splitting the population just makes a game feel dead. Sandboxes are already unpopular due to people being unable to create their own goals and fun in these typs of game. So why take the precious few who can actually man up and make something in the sandbox and split them?

Imagine EVE if they split the carebears and the pirates into two seperate shards. What purpose do the pirates have for playing anymore? And what are the carebears going to accomplish with noone left to buy the ships they made because all the pvpers who get their ships blown up regularily are on a different shard?

Sandboxes are about making one organic world that everyone contributes too, not a multi dimensional themepark to cater to everyones specific "needs"

How are people being forced to play anything they want?  Is someone coming over to your place of residence and putting a gun to your head, telling you that if you don't play what they tell you they will splatter your brains all over your monitor?

If a game contains something you don't like, simply don't play it.  There is nothing being forced on anybody here and I'm quite tired of people claiming this.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

To me FFA PvP is a necessary evil of MMORPG's...why you ask? Cause of elitism and douches that want to beat down the little guy, the little guy has to have a chance, it balances elitism, though....THOUGH...there ALWAYS needs to be harsh penalties to PK'ing people, but someone down on their luck don't usually care anyway, so it enforces treating people as equals as not everyone is going to PK without purpose at it usually involves...or should, harsh penalties.

The problem you struggle with is the costs to support a Themepark MMO.  Since the only challenge is competing against DEV built AI encounters the company has to constant;y be adding content that takes TONs of time and money.

The advantage of FFA PvP or even slightly restricted Open World PvP MMOs are that the Players themselves can provide challenge and content due to human nature , conflict, politics, struggle over resources and even fighting over PvE content.   This competition is at the root of MMOs and in general any games.

Taking a PvP centered sandbox and making the PvP optional suddenly leaves a company with a server that only enjoys a portion of the content and interaction the game has to offer which then can split the development focus because the non PvP folks complain about the limit content.

If the industry hadn't neutered PvP and placated the casual solo players so much over the last 10 years the FFA players wouldn't be complaining so much with money in their hands to tempt Indie developers to make a game just for them.

When an FFA PVP game grows the balls to penalize people who "break the law" in a meaningful way, it MIGHT stand a chance, but until then they will remain niche.

Funnily Enough World of Darkness had a great system: lose enough humanity by breaking masquerade, killing players and/or looting them and you will become perma-death.

Imagine if that applied to Darkfall, or Mortal.  It would be quite a different experience.

OP, what fun is it to fart around in a fantasy world with no risk?  You don't have to pvp in those type of games.  Just try to survive.  The threat of getting killed is worth the price of that type of MMO's admission.  Without this, the MMO is soooooo boring.

This and only this.  There are plenty of OW-FFA-PvP sandbox games.  The wolves don't play any of them because only wolves play these games.  And this and only this, is why there will never be a successful OW-FFA-PvP sandbox game.

Because sheep don't like being forced to play with wolves.

F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

    That's an untrue statement.

To repeat what has been said time and time again - nobody forces you, if you don't want to play with a little danger and want to fight only beatable npcs without any risks - then don't play pvp games.

And really, from experience, well-done open world / FFA PvP MMOs are quite rare. Don't know how the creator of this post decided that they are too much.

Sorry OP but it seems that developers are only after the big money nowadays and there simply isnt enough people like you that want non FFA PvP games to pay for the development of them. This is the reality of MMORPGS, the market dictate the products and this is what the customers want. YOU are just a minority that want these games and for that any serious developer that also wants to bring food to his table will never cater to your needs.

Because the FFA-pvp people will have few players to pvp with? Griefers can't grief without victims, you know.

(Although i highly doubt aside from talking in hypothetical, there will never be case where people who don't want FFA-pvp needs to ever pvp again.)
