You can judge how good a game is gonna be within first few hours of playing it.
For gaming since before the internet that's a hell of a shallow way of judging games.
DeSadeWhirlfist's point is actually a point I agree with and I think devs should really pay attention to how they present the early game in an MMO. If I'm bored trying to get to the fun part of the game chances are I won't keep playing it. I don't need the entire game handed to me on a silver platter at level 1, but if I play a game for 10 hours I expect at that point to be engaged and to care about what I'm doing in game. If I'm not ,chances are I won't keep playing it. My biggest problem with Wildstar, like many MMOs is I just don't care why I'm doing any of it.
It wasn't a review though was it, it was a rant about a game you don't like with some justification that you age validates you flawed interpretation (e.g you have evaluated end game as easy because you um played the first few levels of the levelling part of the game) that's flawed.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
My creditials: If its an MMO i've probably played it, in some cases for years. I grew up on Everquest, I ate Planetside for breakfast, and crapped out many games that have lost my interest. I believe games are suppose to make you want to play, to advance your character, to get the lwwt loots. I believe pvp in todays MMO scene is a requirement, and shouldn't be an after thought.
My likes: End-game, the journey to end game, character progression, PVP.
My dislikes: Easy watered down themeparks that cater to the kids
Wildstar Review- First impressions graphics are different from what I normally play, game play is EXACTLY the same as every other MMO out there. They have the ground markets which allows you to dodge enemy hits, but if you really think about this....Nearly every MMO i've played has ground markers, but they are invisible making the game more difficult. Wildstar shows the ground markers actually making their game more easy then it already way in the MMO market. I remember the days of Everquest, if you stood in front of a dragon you'd normally get fried unless you were the tank. If you stood behind the dragon you wouldn't get hit by cones....Same concept as wildstars combat system, if an enemy has cone attack dodge it or stay behind it and guess what no damage....Whats easier, whats more visually pleasing, whats more realistic this is gonna be the question that haunts Wildstar. In an industry where gaming is already to easy, people looked to Wildstar for difficult and different gaming....Wildstar fails horribly in the eyes of this hardcore gamer. Purchase Wildstar no thanks I wouldn't even play it if it was F2P.
Wildstar beta access: Played for a good solid gaming session 8-10hrs....Won't be back
For someone that is 33yo, you should know that themepark mmos have challenging content at end game. So what exactly were you expecting from 8-10 hours game play?
But, Im with you as well with the 'I dont want to waste so much time to reach end game'. In fact my previous post in my post history mentions what i want... but the fact of the matter is, you have to be fair in the design and judging it for where it counts. for example i am not going to judge the lack of questing in a pvp instance, and the same should go with themepark mmos and the challenge being in the end game.. which is unfortunate... but if its a themepark... thats the way it is.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble
I'm 32 been gaming since I can remember. I think Wildstar is great, but I also think it's not totally for me. You know what's cool though? I it doesn't matter what any of us think. Wildstar will be just fine without any of us.
Here's the thing about catering video games to people who are in the prime working years of their lives, more than likely those people have something else they need to do, and if their not doing it, sooner or later it's going to catch up with them.
If you game 8 to 16 hours a day good for you, I like games and sometimes wish I could play more, but I don't ever want to game 8 to 16 hours a day. I wouldnt have time to do all the other things i do and like to do, like making an honest living and spending time doing all my other hobbies.
So you say you love end game, The road to end game, and character progression... But you just dissmiss a game in with only 8 hrs of play session?
If you would really love end game like you say you would be drooling with what these guys have in store.
Also this is not a review, if anything is a first impression on noob zone. Way to go champ.

Everquest let slip Planes of War back prior to PoP, delivered content nearly 10yrs later.
Age of Conan- Promised ship to ship combat at release, failed
Planetside 2- Promised outfit/guild base ownership.Failed
Shall I go on? How many broken promises until gamers realize developers will tell you one thing then deliver something different. How many times does a promise need to be broken, before you stop taking what is said at face value and start judiging a game on what it has 100% right now.
You should absolutely take WS for what it currently is. That said, the difficult and rewarding raiding is already there. You just haven't given the game a chance. Do you really think that running around getting kicked by snakes for the first week of EQ was the part that drew people in? No, it was seeing other players with their Fungi Tunics and Wu Sticks and looking forward to progressing their skills Nd gear to get to that point. Mmorpgs were never about being the hero the first time you log in, you need to build and grow to that. As someone who played EQ and claims to be old enough to think reasonably, I'm surprised this evades you.
Thing is karti that's a different problem, if he said he hated the levelling s perirnce and didn't get immersed in the story then that would be cool. But no, instead it was translated into to some elitist rant about hardcore end game - which has nothing to do with the levelling xp.

what cracks me up is all these people complaining that WS is too easy because there are the telegraph markers that tell you when a boss or any mob is about to do a special attack. And then they say I have played for hours and I am an experienced gamer and have played games before games were even invented. Well if your so damn smart and game savvy then you should know that there is an option to turn off the telegraphs right? Then the challenge is 10 fold cuz now you have no clue whats about to happen, but with all your experience and knowledge of games I am sure you already knew that and turned them off and still think the game is too easy and just forgot to tell us.
well i died a lot so clearly this game is garbage.
Dont write stupid "Reviews" its not a review unless you give a game fair time and look at it with an unbiased view point.
"Combat is exactly the same as all other mmos" PFFFFT you must be smoking something if you think wildstars telegraph system is even close to being a simple back out of a red circle you did not see anything.
I appreciate this impression. I look for the same thing in games as you mentioned and hate the same things you mentioned. I started MMOs with EQ as well and appreciate your opinion. Think I will pass on this game, maybe one day we will get a suitable EQ replacement...pre PoK...with challenge.
If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!
I'd agree that the tutorial zones (or whatever you want to call them) aren't very challenging. They even gave me a console game vibe. I really could do without all the "DOUBLE KILL" "MEGA SUPER KILL BLAMMO!"....ya, no thanks. Cute, I laughed the first time, but whatever, it's not game breaking for me, just annoying.
I am also missing the draw to log in and play. Most likely because I am not that fond of easy solo content. However, I do believe the game becomes more challenging later on. So, I plan to keep pushing on until I can at least try a 5 man dungeon. They look like fun and what would keep me playing.
I believe that not having any dungeons before level 15 was a mistake. The game could have really used some group content for the first five hours of game play, so those who like it, get hooked.
Regardless, I think it's a game everyone needs to at least try. I will likely purchase it even if I don't play just to support the industry. The genre really needs more interesting developments like this.
The game actually does have a pretty hefty amount of lore. That's one of the things Carbine wanted to make sure it had and have a bit of focus on. The scientist path does open up more lore about what you are currently doing/where you are in the world. As Saio3 has stated, it does require one to read/look into it. If the lore itself isn't for you, then more power to ya, but saying there is none simply isn't true.
I'm ok that you won't be back to this game and won't try to talk you into it; however, for those of you who are reading this review and are looking to give the game a legitimate chance I think there are a few things to note. He played 8-10 hours of the game meaning he was through a few starter zones that guide you through the mechanics and get you used to the active combat that needs aimed etc which other games do not do. (ie Tab Targeting).
He states that the telegraphs make the game carebare and easy. Raid bosses and even the first few dungeons 20+ are quite difficult even with telegraphs as I assure you there is much more going on than in the MMO's of our past in which markers would be unnecessery. (The most complicated mechanic in EQ being pretty much a breath/cone of fire or tail whip.)
As far as the game goes it is very similar and familiar if you have played other MMO's particularly WoW. It expands on what WoW does but you will be able to jump in and quickly find a home. The first 20 levels are easy to most advanced and all hardcore players; however, I'd consider myself hardcore as a player and I struggled with some of the later dungeons especially with PuGs and with the only raid I've been able to test/complete.
The game is full and feature rich at end game and I feel after around 40-60 hours in beta's I've barely scratched the surface. I'm not saying it's the MMO for you but I feel confident in saying it's worth the time to invest in Beta and for me was worth pre-order.

I agree. I mean, I found WS to be utterly obnoxious and pretty much everything I have come to hate about modern MMOs, but a 'few hours' is no time to come to that conclusion.

The lore in this game is pretty shallow. Its something thats been done to death in alot of mmos just with a little twist to it. The underdog side against the corperate side. Same thing in Anarchy online. It even steals quite abit from Anarchy online's lore to be truthful. The planet Nexus is a copy of Rubi Ka.

I didn't like Wildstar. Non-existant lore behind the world killed it for me and also those graphics. My eyes.....
But then again EQ was a boring MMO which I didn't like either.

Lol now that's rich.
I won't delve into it, but I just have to say that lore is there, you just have to...like read and stuff....
also you know that the scientist path is for the lore lovers right?
This video has a lore flavor to it, there are more but...you know, do it yourself XD
